A close spatial relationship was found between the ore bodies and associated anomalies, despite the fact that the parent material of the sampled soils was glacial overburden that mantles the area to a depth of 0-50 feet. The <74 mesh fraction of B-horizon soils was found to be an effective sample type for geochemical exploration in this area. The greatest extent of urban development and the most densely populated area generally correspond to the area where the greatest energy release has been experienced. </p><p>For this study two earthquakes have been simulated, each having magnitude 7.5, a reasonable maximum value for this area. Analysis of the events indicate that under the worst condition as many as 2,200 people would die, and 8,700 additional persons would suffer injuries requiring hospitalization or immediate medical treatment. Such casualties would occur under the worst conditions of exposure, as during the rush hours, but could be approximately as great at any time during the working day. It is possible that as many as 23,500 people would be homeless or would require temporary shelter pending reestablishment or relocation. Conditions of exposure would be altered during the nighttime, causing a drastic reduction in casulaty potentials to a level of about 5-10 percent of the daytime losses. Thus, the time of greatest concern is during the normal working day, and the areas of concern are the highly urbanized sections of the Puget Sound Basin. </p><p>This study is intended to inform those agencies serving the region of potential hazard to people, structures, and lifeline functions, in such a way that the administrators of emergency services can proceed with confidence in planning response to earthquake disaster. Figure 1 shows the extent of the study area and the location of the epicenters of the postulated earthquakes. A comparison of the two isoseismal maps as they apply to each county, in tables 1 through 6, emphasizes the marked change in intensity at a site as the simulated earthquake is moved from a close to a distant location. The Modified Mercalli Intensity scale is defined on page 284. </p><p>The report is concerned not only with human casualties and displacement, but also with impairment or destruction of essential facilities critical to the continuing normal functioning of the area. This includes hospitals and medical personnel, police and fire department equipment and personnel, communications, and utilities. </p><p>The total damage profile was developed with careful consideration of conditions of the seismicity, geological history, population density and distribution, and physical status of structural and lifeline installations throughout the region. There is a potential for broad fluctuation in the casualty figures resulting from the chance positioning of people at the time of the occurrence of the earthquake. An example is that of the Lafayette Elementary School in West Seattle, where, in the 1949 earthquake, a large brick gable over the entry collapsed directly onto an area normally used for assembly of pupils. Such assembly regularly occurred at 11:55 a.m. The earthquake occurred at 11:57 a.m., but fortunately during the spring vacation. </p><p>Following a large earthquake, effective remedial steps to maintain or to return to operation the essential public services will depend upon the prompt and informed actions of public agencies. Response planning should include not only consideration of disaster problems within a particular jurisdiction but also sharing of assistance with neighboring jurisdictions. Moderate response requirements experienced in one area can free resources to aid communities in more heavily damaged portions of the affected area. </p><p>The damage profile is quite different among the six counties within the study. The remainder of the summary is devoted to a brief general assessment of possible problems in each of the counties. A detailed development and presentation of each of the problems is covered in the text of the report.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75375","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1975, A Study of earthquake losses in the Puget Sound, Washington, area: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-375, xi, 298 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75375.","productDescription":"xi, 298 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145553,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0375/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":393665,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0375/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Washington","otherGeospatial":"Puget Sound","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.89282226562501,\n              46.93526088057719\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.860595703125,\n              46.93526088057719\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.860595703125,\n              48.60385760823255\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.89282226562501,\n              48.60385760823255\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.89282226562501,\n              46.93526088057719\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd496ae4b0b290850ef259","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":528938,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Relative ages are expressed as the largest diameter of craters (D<sub>L</sub>, meters) in a mappable unit that are eroded to a slope of 1<strong>°</strong> by the net accumulated flux of small impacts. New data show that the technique used here generally requires a sample area less than 2,000 km<sup>2</sup> for satisfactory results. Additionally, the measurement of relative age (D<sub>L</sub>) using this technique is unaffected by resolutions of about 0.15 D<sub>L</sub> or smaller.</p><p>Results obtained indicate there are two types of plains: 1) light plains and 2) mare plains. The light plains units have two separate and distinct ages (D<sub>L </sub><span>≃ </span>550 m and D <span>≃</span><sub> </sub>1100 m). The range in ages for each of these units is so small that each could represent two separate synchronous lunar events. The maria were deposited in three major stages after the emplacement of the light plains units. The oldest mare units ( &gt; 3.7 b.y. old) are in Mare Tranquillitatis, Mare Vaporum, southeastern Mare Imbrium, the dark ring around Mare Serenitatis and a thin band from the crater Reinhold to Sinus Medii. Suspended-sediment yields were generally low relative to those indicated by data for other streams on southeastern Washington, the southern Cascade Range, and the upper Columbia River basin. The highest long-term sediment yield on the reservation probably is from the Big Muddy Creek basin; the estimated annual yield is about 150 tons per square mile. The suspended sediment transported by this stream is largely from glacial outwash from Mount Adams. Other yields in the basin were estimated to be from 10 to 50 tons per square mile. Mass wasting is considered the principal cause of sediment transport in the streams studied. Some evidence of accelerated sediment production due to road construction was found along Surveyor Creek.\r\n\r\nDuring the flood of January 1974, which has a calculated recurrence interval of more than 100 years, the maximum observed suspended-sediment concentration was 7,830 milligrams per litre, in the North Fork Simcoe Creek. During that flood, an estimated 70,000 tons of sediment was transported from the upper Toppenish Creek basin; this was nearly 600 tons per square mile. The area includes three sinkhole basins created by such subsidence: Cranes Roost, Palm Springs, and Grace Lake.</p><p>Cranes Roost basin (drainage area, 5.02 square miles) contains a closed drainage system of lakes and swamps--including Lakes Adelaide, Florida, and Mobile--that terminates at Cranes Roost sink. It also contains Lake Orienta and two unnamed sinks which do not overflow into Cranes Roost sink.</p><p>Palm Springs basin (drainage area, 1.77 square miles) includes Lake Marion, Eleventh Hole Pond, and several small unconnected sinks.</p><p>Grace Lake basin (drainage area, 1.64 square miles) includes Island Lake which overflows into Grace Lake.</p><p>The recent spread of urban development has tended to encroach on the flood plains of lakes in these sinkhole basins and cause concern over the flood hazard that results. An investigation was made of the area to document the highest known lake levels, to examine possible effects of urbanization with regard to increasing the flood hazard, and to appraise the possibilities of controlling lake levels to reduce or limit the flood hazard.</p><p>The highest lake stages of record in the three sinkhole basins occurred in September 1960. Analyses of the hydrologic relations between lake stages, ground-water levels, stream discharges, and rainfall in the area indicated that the lake stages of September 1960 probably were the highest attained since at least 1895.</p><p>Cultural development that increases the percentage of a sink basin covered by impervious materials will cause more rapid runoff of a larger part of the rainfall in the basin. Thus, as development progresses, lake stages seldom reached under natural conditions may be reached more frequently unless the lake levels are controlled.</p><p>In Crane Roost basin, the levels of Lakes Mobile, Adelaide, and Florida could be controlled by enlarging their surface outlets and adding control structures; however, such measures might be ineffective unless the level of Cranes Roost also was controlled. The level of Cranes Roost could be controlled by removal of water by pumping or by providing a surface outlet; pumping might be ineffective during extreme wet periods because of the potential for inflow from upstream lakes and the potential for ground-water inflow from the Floridan aquifer. The level of Lake Orienta could be Controlled by removal of water by pumping or by providing a surface outlet.</p><p>In the Palm Springs sink basin, the levels of Lake Marion and the several small sinks could be controlled by removal of water by pumping or by providing surface outlets. For the several sinks, however, providing a surface outlet would require an extensive excavation and pumping might prove impractical because of seepage induced from the Floridan aquifer.</p><p>The level of Island Lake--in Grace Lake sink basin-could be controlled by enlarging its surface outlet and providing a control structure. Ore bodies are in metamorphosed steeply dipping Precambrian pelitic and calcareous rocks of a roof pendant adjacent to a Cretaceous(?) porphyritic quartz monzonite pluton. Production during 14 years, of operation has been about 8 million pounds of U3O8 from oxidized and reduced ores averaging 0.23 percent U3O8. \r\n\r\nUranium deposits are generally tabular in form and dimensions range up to 380 m long, 210 m wide, and 50 m thick. Deposits are bounded on at least one side by unmineralized intrusive ribs of granitic rock, and thickest mineralized zones invariably occur at depressions in the intrusive contact. Upper limits of some deposits are nearly horizontal, and upper elevations of adjacent mineralized zones separated by ribs of granite are similar. Near surface ore is predominantly autunite, but ore at depth consists of pitchblende and coffinite with abundant pyrite and marcasite. Uranium minerals occur as .disseminations along foliation, replacements, and stockwork fracture-fillings.\r\n\r\nNo stratigraphic controls on ore deposition are recognized. Rather, mineralized zones cut across lithologic boundaries if permeability is adequate. Most ore is in muscovite schist and mica phyllite, but important deposits occur in calc-silicate hornfels. Amphibolite sills and mid-Tertiary dacite dikes locally, carry ore where intensely fractured. High content of iron and sulfur, contained chiefly in FeS2, appear to be an important feature of favorable host rocks.\r\n\r\nGeometry of deposits, structural, and geochemical features suggest that uranium minerals were deposited over a span of time from late Cretaceous to late Tertiary. Ore occurs in but is not offset by a shear zone that displaces mid-Tertiary rocks.. Economic zones of uranium are interpreted to have been secondarily enriched in late Tertiary time by downward and lateral migration of uranium into permeable zones where deposition was influenced by ground water controls and minerals that could reduce or neutralize uranium-bearing solutions.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr75402","usgsCitation":"Nash, J.T., and Lehrman, N.J., 1975, Geology of the Midnite uranium mine, Stevens County, Washington; a preliminary report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-402, 36 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75402.","productDescription":"36 leaves :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148690,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0402/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":44064,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0402/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67e9df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nash, J. As development proceeds along the north slope of alaska, a knowledge of the potential drift trajectories of water, ice, sediment and pollutants will be needed. In an attempt to better define the probable paths and rates of transport, 4200 surface drift cards were dropped during the U.S. Coast Guard WEBSEC cruise of August and September, 1972. The results of this release are the subject of this report. General conclusions drawn from the study are: (1) Although aluminous chromite deposits exist, no minable deposits of refractory-grade material have been made found to date; (2) small but minable reserves\nof elemental sulfur, fluorspar, and magnesite are available; (3) detailed mapping, prospecting, and sampling are required to fully assess the ore reserves in known deposits, and (4) field examination of some of the other deposits described herein may call for additional exploration which may eliminate them from further consideration as minable deposits. The sulfur deposits at Koh-i-Sultan volcano in the Chagai District of Quetta Division are the only assured source of elemental\nsulfur in Pakistan. Indicated reserves are 85,000 tons of less than 50 percent sulfur ore of solfataric origin. The deposits are currently being mined.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75496","collaboration":"Prepared under the auspices of the Government of Pakistan and the Agency for International Development","usgsCitation":"Nagell, R.H., 1975, Sulfur, fluorspar, magnesite, and aluminous chromite in Pakistan: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-496, iii, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75496.","productDescription":"iii, 34 p.","numberOfPages":"46","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148468,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0496/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271061,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0496/report.pdf"}],"country":"Pakistan","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ 60.87,23.69 ], [ 60.87,37.08 ], [ 77.83,37.08 ], [ 77.83,23.69 ], [ 60.87,23.69 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db69982c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nagell, Raymond H.","contributorId":70777,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nagell","given":"Raymond","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170624,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Test holes also indicate a thick, highly permeable zone in the east part of the county which becomes thinner and interlaced with zones of lower permeability in the west part. </p><p>Water levels decline about 2 to 5 feet (0.6 to 1.5 m) during the dry season (October 1973 to May 1974) in most areas of Martin County. Within the area influenced by the pumping of Stuart's public supply wells, water level declined 6 feet (1.8 m) between October 1973 and May 1974. Water levels during January - May 1974 in this area were 3 to 6 feet (0.0 to 1.8 m) lower than they were in January - May 1965. This difference was due to a three-fold increase in pumpage (0.8 to 2 mgd) from 1965 to 1974. </p><p>Chloride concentrations in four salt water monitoring wells around the Stuart well field ranged from 35 to 45 mg/1 during the rainy season of 1973. As petroleum reservoirs they commonly have poor performance histories. They contain the sediments of a depositional system comprised of three closely associated depositional subenvironments: dune, interdune, and extradune. Sediments of each subenvironment have different textural properties which resulted from different depositional processes. Dune sediments are usually more porous and permeable than interdune or extradune sediments and may be better quality reservoirs than interdune or extradune sediments. Interdune sediments are here restricted to those nondune sediments deposited in the relatively flat areas between dunes. Extradune sediments (a new term) include all deposits adjacent to a dune field and are mainly subaqueous deposits. Dune sediments may be enveloped by extradune sediments as the depositional system evolves resulting in a texturally inhomogeneous reservoir having poor fluid migration properties.\r\n\r\nThis model of textural inhomogeneity in eolian blanket sandstones. was applied to the Weber (Tensleep) Sandstone in Brady, Wertz, and Lost Soldier fields, Sweetwater County, Wyoming. Data were obtained from both outcrop and subsurface and included environmental interpretation, textural analysis, and plotting of the distribution of depositional subenvironments. As predicted from the model, the texture of dune sediments in Brady field differed markedly from interdune and extradune sediments. The predicted geometric distribution of subenvironments was confirmed in Lost Soldier and Wertz fields. However, secondary cementation and fracturing there has obscured the original porosity and permeability contrasts. The porosity and permeability distribution, a characteristic depending partly on depositional processes, could impede fluid migration in the reservoir and significantly reduce recovery of hydrocarbons.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr75363","usgsCitation":"Wrucke, C.T., 1975, Lithology and chemical analyses of core and cuttings from USGS drill hole near Gold Acres, Lander County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-363, 28 leaves :map ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75363.","productDescription":"28 leaves :map ;27 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":149518,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0363/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":45693,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0363/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a61e4b07f02db635c16","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wrucke, Chester T.","contributorId":21145,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wrucke","given":"Chester","email":"","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":173220,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
