The program computes head changes in the confined aquifer and the rate and volume of water withdrawn from aquifer boundaries.</p><p>The program was used to model the sandstone aquifer underlying Dane County, Wisconsin. The aquifer was modeled as a confined aquifer recharged by leakage from the overlying upper aquifer. The physical properties of the aquifer system needed for the model were approximated using aquifer-test data and by matching drawdowns resulting from aquifer development through 1970 with draw-downs computed by the model.</p><p>The sandstone aquifer should be able to supply the water needs of Dane County well beyond 1990. Maximum regional drawdowns of approximately 40 feet (12 m) between 1970 and 1990 were computed by the model. The data were collected as part of a joint heat-flow study by the Australian National University (ANU) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) under the direction of J. C. Jaeger (ANU) and J. H. Sass (USGS). The format is similar to that used for basic data from United States heat-flow determinations (Sass and Munroe, 1974). Each section contains a state map showing the geographic distribution of heat-flow data followed by tables which list individual temperatures, thermal conductivities, and radiogenic heat production values. A companion volume (Bunker and others, 1975) gives details of the heat-production measurements together with individual radioelement concentrations. Localities are arranged in alphabetical order within each state. The methods and techniques of measurements have been described by Sass and others (1971a, b). Unusual methods or procedures which differ markedly from these techniques are noted and described in the comments sections of the tables.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Bottom-hole flowing properties are calculated from measured wellhead data. Whereas wellhead temperatures measured at a particular time tend to change systematically with changes in flow and pressure, calculated bottom-hole temperatures tend to be constant for two sample wells; while for a third, bottom-hole temperatures decrease with increasing flow. Bottom-hole temperatures calculated from wellhead data taken over several years can be constant, increase, or decrease for particular wells. A steady-state model for steam flow to a well is used with calculated bottom-hole data to show that the effect of non-Darcy flow is important. The initial mass of fluid in place for the northeast zone of Larderello (56 km2) is estimated, using data on shut-in pressures and total mass production. Reservoir thickness needed to store this mass of fluid is calculated as a function of porosity and initial fraction of water in pores. Reconnaissance studies of these plutons have shown that the Darby pluton has well above average amounts of U and Th (11.2 ppm and 58.7 ppm respectively), the Kachauik pluton ranges from average to above average U and Th (5.7 ppm and 22.5 ppm respectively), and the Bendeleben pluton contains average amounts of U and Th (3.4 ppm and 16.7 ppm respectively). Water for domestic and stock supplies generally can be obtained from wells in either of the above deposits. Water for municipal, industrial, and irrigation supplies generally can be obtained in limited quantities from the unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel and in adequate quantities from the consolidated rocks in the southeastern part of the area. </p><p>The unconsolidated deposits in the basin receive about 226,000 acre- feet of recharge annually, and about 775,000 acre-feet of water is in storage in the deposits. An additional 77 million acre-feet is in storage in the consolidated aquifers. In 1968 about 7,500 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for all purposes. About 6,300 acre-feet of surface water and 1,400 acre-feet of ground water was withdrawn for irrigation of 7,600 acres of cropland. Minor amounts of it are produced together with tantalum from columbite-tantalite concentrates from pegmatites and placers adjacent to them, in the Sao Joao del Rei district in south-central Minas Gerais. All the niobium and tantalum produced in Brazil is exported. The only pyrochlore mined is from the Barreiro carbonatite deposit near Araxa in Minas Gerais where concentrates and ferroniobium are produced. Exploration work for pyrochlore and other mineral resources are being undertaken on other carbonatites, particularly at Catalao I in southeast Goias and at Tapira and Serra Negra in western Minas Gerais. Annual production and export from the Barreiro deposit are about 8,000 metric tons of pyrochlore concentrate containing about 60 percent Nb205 and about 2,700 metric tons of ferroniobium with 63 percent Nb2O5.\r\n\r\nThe annual production capacity of the Barreiro plant is 18,000 tons of concentrate and 4,000 tons of ferroniobium. Ore reserves of the Barreiro deposit in all categories are 380 million tons with percent Nb2O5. Annual production of tantalite-columbite from the Sao Joao del Rei district, most of which is exported to the United States, is about 290 tons, of which about 79 percent is tantalite and about percent is columbite. Since bedrock geologic features are frequently expressed in the topography the radar lends itself to geologic interpretation. \r\n\r\nThe radar was studied by comparisons with field mapped geologic data first at a scale of approximately 1:125,000 and then at a scale of 1:500,000. The larger scale comparison revealed that faults, minor faults, joint sets, bedding and foliation attitudes, lithology and lithologic contacts all have a topographic expression interpretable on the imagery. Surficial geologic features were far less visible on the imagery over most of the area studied. The smaller scale comparisons revealed a pervasive, near orthogonal fracture set cutting all types and ages of rock and trending roughly N40?E and N30?W. In certain places the strike of bedding and foliation attitudes and some lithologic Contacts were visible in addition to the fractures. \r\n\r\nFracturing in southern New England is apparently far more important than has been previously recognized. The area is mostly underlain by quartz monzonite. Countless quartz veins ranging from a knife edge to more than 3 m in thickness cut the quartz monzonite; many of these veins contain molybdenite. Detailed mapping and intensive sampling of the molybdenite-bearing quartz veins indicate that their grade and quantity are probably inadequate to permit present-day mining; however, they represent a potential future resource.
