The largest deposits now undergoing extensive exploration and development are in the eastern Amazon Basin. Most of these deposits are in the State of Para, but some are in Amazonas and Maranhao.

Discovery of large-scale resources of bauxite in the Amazon Region is so recent that mining has not begun, but government geologists estimate the total resources in aluminum deposits in the lower Amazon to be in the multibillion ton range.

The annual production rate of bauxite ore in Brazil, much of it from Pops de Caldas in Minas Gerais, is about 760,000 metric tons of ore from which about 100,000 tons of aluminum metal is produced, most of which is consumed by Brazilian industry.

The Amazon bauxite deposits are on terraces formed on sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age; in Minas Gerais the deposits are formed on Precambrian metasedimentary rock, and at Poos de Caldas on a circular alkalic pluton of Cretaceous age.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7530","usgsCitation":"White, M.G., 1975, Aluminum resources of Brazil: U.S. With this model, which was calibrated and verified with observed data, computed temperatures usually agreed within 2° Celsius of observed temperatures. During a phytoplankton bloom in the summer of 1968 the computed chlorophyll a concentrations increased and decreased with the observed concentrations; however, during two blooms in 1967 the computed high concentrations persisted farther downstream and lasted a few days longer than the observed concentrations. The computed and observed dissolved-oxygen concentrations usually agreed within 2 milligrams per litre, except during phytoplankton blooms. During the blooms, the differences were often larger, especially when the computed chlorophyll a concentrations were larger than the observed concentrations.

The model was used to predict the dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the Duwamish River estuary when the Renton Treatment Plant sewage-effluent discharge is increased to its proposed maximum of 223 cubic feet per second (6.31 cubic metres per second). The computed monthly average dissolved-oxygen concentrations in the estuary decreased by a maximum of 2 milligrams per litre when compared with computations for the summer of 1971, when the effluent discharge averaged 37 cubic feet per second (1.05 cubic metres per second). The oldest sediments drilled or dredged on the bordering Continental Slope are sandstone, clay, and silt of Upper Cretaceous age. In Upper Cretaceous exposures, on Marthas Vineyard and nearby New England islands, the predominant lithology appears to be clay. About 125 km northeast of the eastern tip of Georges Bank, the Shell B-93 well penetrated clays and silts of Upper and Lower Cretaceous age above dense Jurassic carbonate rocks which overlie a basement of lower Paleozoic slate, schist, quartzite, and granite.

Structurally, the Georges Bank basin is a westerly trending trough which opens to the west-southwest. Post-Paleozoic sediments are more than 8 km thick in parts of the basin. Major structural features appear to be directly related to basement structures. Local anticlines, probably caused by differential compaction over basement flexures and horst blocks or by later uplift along basement faults are reflected principally in Lower Cretaceous and older sediments, though some of these features continue upward to within 0.7 of a second (about 650 m) of the seafloor.

Tertiary deposits in the Georges Bank basin are probably up to a kilometre thick and are made up of poorly consolidated sand, silt, and clay. The Cretaceous section is inferred to be up to 3.5 km thick and to be mainly clastics -- shale, siltstone, calcareous shale, changing to limestone in the lowest part of the system. Jurassic rocks in the deepest part of the basin appear to be about 3.6 to 4.0 km thick and probably consist mainly of dense carbonates.

Potential source rocks in the Georges Bank basin may include organic-rich Cretaceous shale and carbonaceous Jurassic limestone. By analogy with the Scotian Shelf, Cretaceous sandstones are considered to be potential reservoir rocks. Local zones of porous dolomite are believed to be present in carbonate rocks of Jurassic age and should not be overlooked as potential reservoirs.

Structural highs related to draping and differential compaction over basement blocks could be important potential petroleum traps. Additional traps may include reef structures near the shelf edge, updip pinchouts, and stratigraphic traps in both clastic and carbonate sediment.

A statistical mean for the undiscovered recoverable petroleum resources is calculated to be 0.9 billion barrels of oil and 4.2 trillion cubic feet of gas. At the 5 percent probability level (1 in 20 chance) the undiscovered recoverable petroleum resources are calculated to be 2.4 billion barrels of oil and 12.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. These undiscovered recoverable petroleum resources are those quantities of oil and gas that may be reasonably expected to exist in favorable settings, but which have not yet been identified by drilling. Such estimates, therefore, carry a high degree of uncertainty.

Environmental studies of Georges Bank indicated a low-moderate risk from petroleum development. However, the risk estimate is based on very limited data. Drift bottle returns used to infer oil spill trajectories show about a 2% overall recovery rate. Meteorologic data comes mainly from nearby land areas and from ships attempting to avoid storms. Seismicity on Georges Bank is low. This may reflect, in large part, the difficulty of land-based stations in recording earthquakes far from the coast. Direct data on the engineering properties of shallow buried sediment comes mainly from two Texas Tower surveys of limited areas on Georges Shoal and Nantucket Shoals made in the early 1950's. The 17 holes (most less than 30 m deep) reveal some silty layers below loose sand and much lateral variability in sediment type over short distances.

The technology for exploration at the required water depths (20 m - 200 m) is available. Mobil drilling units are in great demand around the world and will have to be brought in from other areas along with skilled manpower. Our highest estimates indicate 50 platforms, 800 producing wells, 1,100 km of pipeline, and 5 onshore terminals may be needed. The time frame for production, using our high estimates (5% probability) for the undiscovered recoverable resources, could include 4-5 years for significant development, 6-7 years until production commences, and 18 years until peak production.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr75353","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1975, Sediments, structural framework, petroleum potential, environmental conditions, and operational considerations of the United States North Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-353, vii, 179 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75353.","productDescription":"vii, 179 p.","numberOfPages":"192","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":149763,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":259891,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0353/ofr19750353.pdf","text":"Report","size":"50.5 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"OFR 1975-353"}],"contact":"
Coastal and Marine Geology Program
U.S. Geological Survey
384 Woods Hole Road
Woods Hole, MA 02543
","tableOfContents":"

Abstract

Introduction

Physiography

Geology of Georges Bank basin

Geology of the Gulf of Maine

Geophysics of Georges Bank Basin

Geologic History

Resources (other than petroleum)

Petroleum geology

Environmental Considerations

Operational Considerations

Summary

Conclusions on oil and gas possibilities in the Georges Bank basin

References Cited

Appendix I. By utilizing state-of-the-art integrated circuits, the size of the remote unit has been considerably reduced over previous equipment and the power consumption has been decreased by a factor of over 100 to less than 2 milliwatts. This reduction in size and power makes it possible to package the electronic equipment, together with a year's supply of batteries, in a container the size of a tennis-ball can. The field equipment for a short-period station is now sealed in a 3-inch plastic tube 22 inches long . The tube, together with the connecting cable to the telephone terminal, is buried; greatly reducing losses due to water flooding, pilferage, etc. An important addition to the field unit is a daily calibration of the seismometer and amplifier.

Specifications and instructions for the three units that compose the system are presented separately, as follows:

1. J302 Preamplifier and voltage controlled oscillator

2. C-4 Calibrator

3. J101 Discriminator
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7564","usgsCitation":"Van Schaack, J.R., 1975, Self-calibrating seismic amplifier and telemetry system: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-64, 44 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7564.","productDescription":"44 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":363379,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0064/ofr7564_report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":147620,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0064/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ffe4b07f02db5f7b47","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Schaack, John R.","contributorId":61040,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Schaack","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172726,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This inventory was designed to determine and document the use of the 85 earth science products prepared as a part of the San Francisco Bay Region Environment and Resources Planning Study (SFBRS).

This inventory showed that: (1) three-fourths of the cities had planning staffs who were familiar with SFBRS products, or had made use of such products; (2) over half of the cities had prepared planning documents which contained references to SFBRS products; (3) the types of planning applications most often indicated were: geologic hazards studies; seismic safety, public safety, conservation, and open-space plan elements; general reference; and the preparation and review of environmental impact reports and statements; (4) almost 90 percent of all 85 SFBRS products were used at least once for a city planning activity, and one product was used at least 67 times for various city planning activities; and (5) at least forty-five other other USGS products were also used for various city planning activities.

All of the seven SFBRS products that were used 30 or more times for city planning activities were small-scale, large-areal-coverage, hazard-type products. Each product is interpretative and contains additional data which makes it more relevant or more interesting.

The planning staffs of each city were also interviewed and asked to indicate any problems in the use of the SFBRS products, to recommend improvements, and to identify any needed or desired earth science data. The responses showed that: (1) the map scales commonly used by cities were much larger than 1:12,000; (2) few cities had planning staffs with training or experience in the earth sciences or engineering; (3) less than one-fourth of the cities failed to use SFBRS products-primarily because their staffs were unaware of the SFBRS, unfamiliar with its products, or lacked adequate capability; (4) almost two-thirds of the cities expressed some problems in using the products-primarily scale and detail; (5) over two-thirds of the cities expressed an interest in continuing to use, or planning to use, the SFBRS products in the future, and a need or desire for additional earth science, engineering or other data; and (6) over one-half of the cities suggested improvements-primarily larger scale or more detail and less technical or more interpretative products.

From the inventory and responses to the interviews, it is concluded that the cities in the Bay region have considerable familiarity with, and have made substantial use of, SFBRS products. This use was made by many cities despite their small size, limited staff capability, and the design of the products which was intended primarily for regional planning at a regional scale.

Suggestions are made to ensure more familiarity with, and more effective use of, earth science data in the future. These suggestions include: (1) providing engineering interpretations and land-use capability ratings to make earth science data more readily usable; (2) monitoring and analyzing new state laws and regulations to better anticipate and respond to local earth science data needs; (3) including technical assistance with any earth science data designed for planners and decision-makers; (4) providing larger scale and greater detail earth science data on a demonstration basis; (5) giving priority to urban and urbanizing areas so as to conserve limited staff resources; and (6) ensuring product distribution to all potential users.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr75276","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development","usgsCitation":"Kockelman, W., 1975, Use of USGS earth science products by city planning agencies in the San Francisco Bay region, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 75-276, v, 110 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr75276.","productDescription":"v, 110 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":397059,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0276/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146587,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1975/0276/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay region","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -122.71728515624999,\n 37.54457732085582\n ],\n [\n -121.9921875,\n 37.54457732085582\n ],\n [\n -121.9921875,\n 38.039438891821746\n ],\n [\n -122.71728515624999,\n 38.039438891821746\n ],\n [\n -122.71728515624999,\n 37.54457732085582\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b15e4b07f02db6a4d92","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kockelman, W.
