Both spring and fall quakes appear to be triggered by minor local stresses superposed on regional tectonic stresses; faulting is postulated to occur when the effective normal stress across a fault is decreased by a local increase in pore-fluid pressure. The spring quakes tend to occur when the reservoir level suddenly rises: increased pore pressure pushes apart the walls of the graben flooded by the reservoir, thus decreasing the effective normal stress across faults in the graben. Although no fossils have been found in the immediate vicinity of the pass, assemblages collected at the end of the last century from 5 miles south of the pass, and recently collected fossils from Afghanistan, suggest strongly that the limestone is Carboniferous to Permian and perhaps Jurassic in age. The basal contact of the Khyber Limestone in places appears to be conformable upon the quartzites and tuffs of the Ali Masjid Formation; elsewhere it is probably an unconformity or a fault, especially where the limestone lies directly on the Ordovician to Carboniferous Landi Kotal Slate. The Ali Masjid Formation overlies the Shagai Limestone, which, in turn, rests in fault contact on the Landi Kotal Slate.</p><p>Structurally the area is characterized by at least four major, roughly east-west trending thrust or reverse faults, along which relatively older rocks have moved southward over younger rocks. A north-northeast-trending system of alternating anticlines and synclines has been superimposed on the earlier structures. The metamorphic units consist of probable correlatives of the Precambrian(?) Salkhala Series; the upper Paleozoic, slightly metamorphosed schists, quartzites, and calcareous rocks of the Chalt Schist; the higher metamorphosed (garnet and staurolite grades) schists, gneisses, and marbles of the Baltit Group; the Pasu Slate; and the Triassic(?) and older(?) greenstone complex consisting in large part of metavolcanic rocks.</p><p>The metamorphism of the area is due at least in part to the intrusions of two huge silicic to intermediate batholiths of Cretaceous to Tertiary age composed largely of biotite granodiorite.</p><p>The structural grain is west-northwest throughout the area and represents a part of the structural pattern whose focus is the Hazara-Kashmir syntaxial bend. Although steep faults and isoclinal folds are present, no large thrust faults were seen. The area apparently is structurally less complicated than comparable parts of the Hindu Kush mountains farther west in Chitral State. Deeply incised streams and elevated terraces indicate very recent uplift of considerable magnitude.</p><p>Although traces of potential ore minerals are common in the Gilgit-Hispar area, deposits of possible commercial value were not seen. Heavy-mineral samples of stream sands contain fairly high concentration of scheelite. The radioactivity of the stream sands is in large&nbsp; part due to the thorium and uranium content of zircon. In the case of strontium analyses, ratios are corrected for rubidium content and normalized for mass spectrometer fractionation. Although almost any minicomputer would be suitable, the model used was the Data General Nova 1210 with 8K memory. With these are always associated galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, and minor amounts of marcasite. The gangue is generally a breccia of various rock types, mostly volcanics, cemented by calcite that has been largely replaced by quartz. The quarts is often amethystine, and is the carrier of the metallic minerals. The breccia fragments are pyritized, but not markedly mineralized otherwise; most of the ore minerals are in the quarzitic cementing materials; however, relatively large crystals of the complex sulphosalts appear to be younger than, i.e., deposited on, the quarts crystals in vugs.</p><p>The mineralization is not of the banded-vein type, but consists of discrete ore particles in patches and streaks in the quarts. In general there is no,clear indication that any of the base-metal sulfides are in a definite age sequence; there is evidence of argentite replacing galena, as well as the other sulfides.</p><p>There are local variations in the gangue - a soapstone (\"jabon\") is worked locally, and also a porous leached (?) siliceous rock (\"charasco\"). The character of the mineralisation, however, is essentially constant throughout the area studied, and in particular no significant variation was noted in the several vein systems.</p><p>Investigation of gas-liquid inclusions in the quartz suggests that the ores were deposited at about 254°C and, therefore, that the mineralization is hydrothermal.</p><p>Possible recovery of the base-metal content of the ore is considered; it is computed that several hundred thousand dollars worth of copper, zinc, and lead is mined and milled annually, and discarded as tailings and/or slag. This with similar waste from not-too remote mining districts might be processed at some central point for profitable recovery. Of these, 16 are sandstones, three are highly CaCO<sub>3</sub>-rich silts and carbonate rocks, and one is an olivine-magnetite-rich basalt. Eight of the sandstones have been point-counted in an effort to determine compositional trends. Sample numbers, lithologies, and locations are summarized in Table 1, and locations are shown in Figure 1. Dr. Joe S. Aquifers in the Eutaw Formation are the shallowest source of ground water in most of the county.</p><p>The average annual runoff originating in Hale County is about 17 inches or 0.82 mgd per square mile. The Black Warrior River, largest potential source of surface water in the county, has an average flow of 5,800 mgd at gaging station 2-4660 near Eutaw and a median annual 7-day low flow of 349 mgd. Elliotts, Fivemile, Big Brush, and Big Prairie Creeks also are potential sources of surface water. These creeks have average flows ranging from 35 to 210 mgd and median annual 7-day low flows in excess of 2 mgd at their lower reaches.</p><p>Water from most streams in the county contains less than 10 mg/l (milligrams per liter) chloride and ranges from soft to hard. The mineral content of water from Big Brush Creek is affected by salty water from a flowing well. Ground water from the major aquifers contains less than 250 mg/l chloride, except in the extreme northwestern and west-central parts of the county, and ranges from soft to very hard. Water from the aquifers generally contains iron in excess of 0.3 mg/l except in the southern part of the county.</p><p>Water use in Hale County in 1968 was about 3.9 mgd, most of which was ground water. Four areally distinct sand and gravel aquifers were mapped in the drift during the course of this study. The aquifer of greatest economic importance consists of sand and gravel deposits of glacial-outwash origin which coincide with the courses of the White River and Fall Creek. Ground water in this aquifer is generally unconfined. Three thin, areally discontinuous, sheetlike deposits of sand and gravel situated one above the other occur in the till-plain area of the county. These deposits coalesce in some areas, but generally are separated by beds of silt and clay of varying thickness which cause the ground water in the till-plain aquifers to be semiconfined.</p>\n<p>The uppermost 100 feet (30 metres) or so of limestone and (or) dolomite underlying the glacial drift constitutes an aquifer of secondary importance in the county. This aquifer is separated from the unconsolidated aquifers either by silt and clay or by shale.</p>\n<p>The present movement of ground water through these aquifers is generally toward the White River, Fall Creek, Eagle Creek or Buck Creek. Based on seepage data, water levels in the aquifers in April and May 1974, and subsequent electric-analog-model analysis, discharge of ground water by seepage into the streams in the glacial outwash averages about 42 cubic feet per day per foot (3.9 cubic metres per day per metre) of channel length.</p>\n<p>A four-layer electric-analog model incorporating the geometry and hydraulic characteristics of the aquifers, the confining beds and the stream- aquifer connection was constructed to determine the feasibility and hydrologic results of proposed plans for future ground-water development.</p>\n<p>Three large well fields were simulated in the model of the glacial-outwash aquifer, with pumping nodes situated so as to take advantage both of high transmissivity areas in the aquifer, and of recharge from the streams.</p>\n<p>A series of model experiments were carried out to test the capacity of the aquifers to sustain increases in pumpage. In all of these, a new equilibrium was established within 6 years of simulated pumpage. In two of these experiments, water levels in the discharging wells were allowed to draw down to approximately half of the saturated thickness of the glacial-outwash aquifer. At this drawdown limit, the total discharge of wells in the system was found to be 59 million gallons per day (2.6 cubic second) assuming that the streams were fully connected to the upper third of the glacial-outwash aquifer. In two other experiments, discharging wells were allowed to drawdown an average of two-thirds of the saturated thickness of the glacial-outwash aquifer. At this limit, the total discharge was found to be 72 million gallons per day (3.2 cubic metres per second) using the conservative stream-aquifer connection, and 103 million gallons per day (4.5 cubic metres per second) assuming a full connection. Some dewatering of the aquifer was associated with the 72 million gallons per day (3.2 cubic metres per second) discharge.
