Silicate minerals in these rocks may have high Ti0<sub>2</sub> contents, but the oxides ilmenite, rutile, brookite, and perovskite are also characteristic primary phases. These tend to be higher in niobium than are the same minerals from other rock suites.</p><p>At Tapira, Brazil, titanium minerals in a carbonatite complex comprise tens of millions of tons contained Ti0<sub>2. </sub>Anatase (as \"leucoxene\") is present in laterite lying over parent rocks containing perovskite, ilmenite, and rutile. Most mudflows from the volcano were caused by massive avalanches of volcanic rock that had been partly altered to clay by steam and other gases. Future mudflows like these could move down valleys for distances of tens of kilometres. Floods caused by rapid melting of snow and ice by lava flows or hot rock debris could affect valley floors far from the volcano, especially if they occurred at a time of high stream discharge due to other causes. Small amounts of tephra (airborne rock debris) have been erupted at least four times during the last 10,000 years. Eruptions like these in the future probably would not seriously endanger human life except within a distance of perhaps a few kilometres of the vent. Lava flows have been erupted at least twice during the last 10,000 years, but have moved down only two valleys. Future lava flows will not directly endanger people because movement typically is so slow that escape is possible. Eruptions which caused pyroclastic flows (flows of hot rock debris) evidently occurred during only one period, and the flows were restricted to only one valley. Pyroclastic flows seriously endanger human life in areas they affect. Since 1945 the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority has had the responsibility for planning, developing and operating water supply and waste treatment facilities on a municipal basis. The purpose of this study was to develop operational techniques whereby a planning agency, such as the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, could project the temporal and spatial distribution of .future water demands. \r\n\r\nThis report is part of a 2-year cooperative study between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Environmental Quality Board of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, for the development of systems analysis techniques for use in water resources planning. While the Commonwealth was assisted in the development of techniques to facilitate ongoing planning, the U.S. Geological Survey attempted to gain insights in order to better interface its data collection efforts with the planning process. \r\n\r\nThe report reviews the institutional structure associated with water resources planning for the Commonwealth. A brief description of alternative water demand forecasting procedures is presented and specific techniques and analyses of Puerto Rico demand data are discussed. Water demand models for a specific area of Puerto Rico are then developed. These models provide a framework for making several sets of water demand forecasts based on alternative economic and demographic assumptions. In the second part of this report, the historical impact of water resources investment on regional economic development is analyzed and related to water demand .forecasting. The first string of casing collapsed during completion, however, and the well was abandoned before it could be tested. The lithology of the Upper Cretaceous Dalton Sandstone and Dilco Coal Members of the Crevasse Canyon Formation and the Gallup Sandstone was interpreted from geophysical logs and examination of the drill cuttings. These units appear to be similar to correlative strata encountered in the first two wells. The termination date for publications in the 1970 report was November 1, 1969.
