The U.S. Soil Conservation Service is actively engaged in the implementation of flood- and soil-erosion reducing measures in Texas under the authority of \"The Flood Control Act of 1936 and 1944\" and \"Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act\" (Public Law 566), as amended. The Soil Conservation Service has found that approximately 3,500 floodwater-retarding structures would be physically and economically feasible in Texas. As of September 30, 1973. 1,587 of these structures had been built.

Northwestern Kansas, an area of 8,050 square miles (21,000 square kilometres), is a flat to gently rolling plain that is dissected by the Smoky Hill and Republican Rivers. Loessial soils underlying the plain are ideal for cultivation.

The climate is semiarid with the mean annual precipitation ranging from 16 to 21 inches (41 to 53 centimetres). Precipitation occurring mainly as thunderstorms during the 6-month growing season is four to five times less than the potential evaporation.

Principal aquifers are the Dakota Formation, which yields a few gallons per minute of water to domestic and stock wells; the Ogallala Formation, which commonly yields 500 to 1,200 gallons per minute (32 to 76 litres per second) to irrigation wells; and the alluvium, which locally yields as much as 1,500 gallons per minute (95 litres per second) to irrigation wells.

Irrigation by ground water from wells has developed principally since the early 1950's. Development has increased from about 100 wells irrigating 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares) in 1950 to about 2,200 wells irrigating 300,000 acres (120,000 hectares) in 1972. The rate of withdrawal by irrigation, municipal, and industrial wells in 1972 was about 500,000 acre-feet (620 x 106 cubic metres) of water per year, of which about 99 percent was for irrigation.

A comparison of water levels measured in 1950 and in 1973 indicates that declines greater than 10 feet (3 metres) are common in much of the area. Declines greater than 30 feet (9 metres) have occurred near Goodland and Colby. The areas of greatest irrigation-well density correspond to the areas of greatest water-level decline.

More ground water could be withdrawn annually for irrigation, but additional water-level declines in some areas may make the wells uneconomical to pump. The ground-water reservoir can be managed to prolong the irrigation economy of the area.

Donner Lake is easily accessible to the metropolitan areas of Sacramento and San Francisco and is close to many recreational areas in the Sierra Nevada. The lake is used for recreation and is bordered by commercial establishments, summer vacation homes, and a large state campground. Domestic wastes around the lake have received only septic tank treatment. A sewerage system under construction and partly in use at the time of this study has been completed and now (January 1975) all domestic wastes are transported out of the basin.

In September of 1969 and 1970, a brief survey of the lake was conducted (Iwatsubo and others, 1972, p. 28). The results of that study indicated a well-established thermocline between 33 and 66 ft (10 and 20 m). A subsurface maximum in the dissolved-oxygen concentration occurred between 46 and 66 ft (14 and 20 m). In the shallow littoral zone, periphyton and patches of submerged rooted plants were visible.

In order to remain attractive for recreational use, Donner Lake will require sound management. A thorough understanding of the water quality in the lake and the quality of inflow and outflow is of paramount importance.

Rhyolitic domes, flows, and ash-flow tuffs of Miocene to Holocene age form an important part of the thick sequence of Cenozoic volcanic rocks that cover southeastern Oregon east of the Cascade Range. Rhyolitic domes 11-17 m.y. old are widespread, particularly in the easternmost part of the state and in adjacent parts of Idaho and Nevada. Domes younger than 11 m.y. occur principally in two 250-km-long belts that trend N. 75° W. On the basis of 47 K/Ar radiometric dates, the rhyolitic domes in and between these belts show a remarkably well defined monotonic age progression from less than 1 m.y. old in the west to about 10 m.y. old on the east. The progression in age of the domes is sufficiently well defined that the ages of the domes can be smoothly contoured and the age of most undated domes can be estimated to within 1 m.y. The age contours are oblique to the trend of the two belts; domes younger than 4 m.y. occur only in and near the northern belt. The rate of progression is about 1 cm/yr for domes younger than about 5 m.y. and 3 cm/yr for domes 5-10 m.y. old. The change in rate of progression about 5 m.y. ago is accompanied by a change in orientation of the age contours and in area of outcrop. Inferred vents for dated rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs younger than 10 m.y. are located in areas where domes are approximately the same age as the tuffs and thus also fit the age progression.

Most electric-power-producing geothermal fields in the world occur in or proximal to areas of young silicic volcanic rocks. On the basis of the well-defined age progression of rhyolitic domes in southeastern Oregon, silicic intrusive bodies sufficiently young to be heat sources for geothermal systems are likely only in the vicinity of Newberry Volcano at the west end of the northern belt of domes.

Limnological data were compiled on 21 lakes in the San Francisco Bay area. The data were obtained from regulating agencies and from recent surveys made by the U.S. Geological Survey. The history of each lake and of its respective regulating agency is presented, along with methods used for data collection and analyses.

The largest reservoir, Lake Berryessa, has a volume of 1,600,000 acre-ft (1,975 hm3), with a drainage. area of 576 mi2 (1,490 km2 ). Pilarcitos Lake is one of the smallest reservoirs, with a volume of 3,100 acre-ft (3. 8 hm3) and a drainage area of 3. 80 mi 2 (9.84km2). Eleven of the 21 reservoirs are open to the public for recreation. The most intensive shoreline development and use is at Lake Berryessa and Lake Merced. All but three of the 21 reservoirs (not including Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir) were thermally stratified during the summer. Eight of the reservoirs showed evidence of dissolvedoxygen depletion during the summer. Lafayette Reservoir and Loch Lomond are mechanically aerated in order to increase the dissolved-oxygen concentration and lower the surface water temperature. The lake waters ranged from the hard (320 mg/1 CaC03) of Calero Reservoir, to the soft (27 mg/1 CaC03) of Upper Crystal Springs Reservoir. Drainage from abandoned mercury mines in Santa Clara County has resulted in mercury concentrations in Calero and Lexington Reservoir fish which exceed U.S. Food and Drug limitations (0.5 μ/g) for acceptability of mercury in fish used for human food. In Loch Lomond, four major production periods of the blue-green algae, Anabaena sp. , occurred from May to October, 1967-69. Blue-green algae were the most numerous algae in Lake Del Valle from March through July 1971, with 5,400 blue-green algal organisms per millilitre collected in April.

A crest-stage gaging station provides an excellent means for determining peak water-surface elevations at a selected location on a stream channel. When related to streamflow, these data provide hydrologists with a knowledge of the flood experience of a drainage basin. If an adequate flood history is known, it is possible to estimate the probable magnitude and frequency of floods likely to occur in that basin, and this information is a valuable asset to anyone who must estimate design floods at proposed drainage structures. However, most design problems involve estimating peak flows on ungaged streams. This is difficult because the rate of storm runoff is not the same in all basins due to the influence of various basin characteristics which can either assist or retard the runoff. The crest-stage gaging program in Oregon is designed to provide a representative sampliing of peak flows at basins having a wide range in characteristics. Then, after sufficient data are collected, a statistical analysis can be made which will provide a means for estimating design floods at ungaged sites on the basis of known basin characteristics.

This report is one of a series presenting a compilation of peak data collected at 232 crest-stage gaging stations in Oregon. The collection and publication of these data are made possible through mutual funding by State and Federal agencies. The Geological Survey, the Oregon State Highway Commission, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Bureau of Land Management are currently supporting 160 active crest-stage stations in Oregon.

(more than 120 milligrams per liter) and has a high iron concentration (greater than 6,000 micrograms per liter). The predominant ions found in the water were calcium and bicarbonate.
