To determine what measures are required to provide a better quality mine-water discharge in the Wyoming Valley, mine hydrology and mine-water quality are related to mine-pool management. The addition of mine-pool outlets at several locations would increase the rate of discharge and reduce interpool flow, which would reduce the total mineral load discharged to the river. Such records are of immeasurable value and are essential if water resources are to be planned wisely and managed efficiently. Their value for planning and management can be greatly enhanced if the records are analyzed statistically. This report presents statistics on the flow of streams in the Loup River basin. As major irrigation projects have been constructed in the basin since gaging of streamflow was begun, the complete record of water discharge at some gaging stations includes periods before and after streamflow was first affected by diversions to an upstream project. Streamflow records presented in this report have been computed from data that represent current conditions of development and water use. <br></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Upstream from the Massachusetts State line the Hoosic River drains a total of 205 mi<sup>2</sup> (531 km<sup>2</sup>) of which 164 mi<sup>2</sup> (425 km<sup>2</sup>) are in Massachusetts, 29 mi<sup>2</sup> (101 km<sup>2</sup>) are in Vermont, and 2 mi<sup>2</sup> (5 km<sup>2</sup>) are in New York. This report contains hydrologic data for that part inside Massachusetts and includes all, or parts of, the towns of Adams, Cheshire, Clarksburg, Dalton, Florida, Hancock, Lanesborough, New Ashford, North Adams, Savoy, Williamstown, and Windsor.</p><p>The data tabulated here were collected during an investigation of the water resources of the Hoosic River basin in Massachusetts by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission. This report is released to make available to the public basic hydrologic and related information that will facilitate the planning of water-resources development and complements an interpretive report of the area (Hansen and others, 1973).</p><p>Data presented include selected information on wells, test borings, springs, seismic surveys, streamflow records, chemical analyses of surface and ground water and of rainfall, and suspended-sediment concentrations of surface water. There has been much speculation concerning the hydrologic conditions that led to the formation of the swamp.</p><p>Oaks and Coch (1973) recently completed a detailed investigation of the geology and morphology of the area. An analysis of their geology and the pollen work of Whitehead (1972) has lead the authors to the following hypothesis concerning the hydrologic conditions that led to the formation of the peat in the swamp.</p><p>A permeable sand facies of the Norfolk Formation underlies Dismal Swamp. This facies was originally completely covered by the Sand Bridge Formation, which is a confining layer, and underlain by the impermeable Yorktown Formation. Movement of water eastward within the Norfolk Formation from the outcrop area on the top of the Suffolk Scarp was further restricted by a less permeable facies of the Norfolk east of the swamp; thereby creating an artesian head within the permeable sand facies of the Norfolk Formation.</p><p>Erosion during the Pleistocene age breached the Sand Bridge confining layer and allowed upward seepage of water along the shallow stream valleys. This seepage, combined with the abundant rainfall and naturally sluggish surface drainage, may have been sufficient to trigger the formation of peat along stream valleys about 9,000 years ago. The peat further inhibited surface drainage, which in turn, accelerated the accumulation of peat until the interfluve areas were covered. The present role of the Norfolk Formation in the hydrology of the swamp is not clear, but it is considered to be one of the most important aspects of the hydrology to be studied in future investigations.</p><p>Surface inflow is from small streams draining from the west. The flow of these streams varies widely, being generally less in the summer than in winter. Outflow is primarily through the Feeder Ditch-Dismal Swamp Canal system, which discharges at South Mills and Deep Creek locks.</p><p>Rates and direction of surface flow within the swamp are partly controlled by gates on many of the ditches. Inadequately controlled ditches penetrating the Norfolk Formation plus withdrawal of water from wells along Suffolk Scarp have altered the flow of ground water under the swamp. These modifications and the loss of water through the Dismal Swamp Canal have probably resulted in a generally drier swamp as indicated by changes in the vegetation. It is feasible to preserve Dismal Swamp, but more detailed studies of the hydrology are needed to aid in future management.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The results are briefly summarized in the following section. The second section consists of geologic studies of four widely separated areas on Mars (figure 1) selected to provide as wide a variety of environments as possible. For each area a detailed geologic map of a high resolution Mariner 9 B-frame was made and several exemplary traverses were plotted to show how the various geologic units might be visited, sampled, and analyzed. In each area 5 to 10 geologic units appear to be accessible. A substantial fraction of each area is covered by loess-like or dune-like units or channel deposits. That is, there are extensive deposits of transported debris that may be strongly sorted by sedimentational processes. However a variety of indigenous rocks are also present in each of the areas selected. Volcanic rocks of several types and impact debris occur locally. These are masked to varying degrees by the transported debris.<br></p><p>Two additional capabilities are necessary beyond those available for Viking '75. The first is a decrease in the size of the landing ellipse so the spacecraft can be put down close to a desirable landing point. Two saline water-bearing zones occur within the depth interval 400 to 1,200 feet (120 to 370 metres); the upper zone is termed the lower Hawthorn aquifer and the lower zone is termed the Suwannee aquifer. Fresh water infiltrates into the aquifers in the central highlands region of Florida where water levels are as much as 130 feet (40 metres) above sea level. The water subsequently moves southwestward into the report area becoming progressively more saline toward the coast.</p><p>Both aquifers are under sufficient artesian pressure to cause wells tapping them to flow at land surface. Water levels range from more than 50 feet (15 metres) above sea level in the northeastern part of the county to about 30 feet (9 metres) or less along the coast. Artesian pressure in the aquifers has been reduced along the Caloosahatchee River by heavy withdrawal and this reduction in pressure is a major factor in deterioration of water quality in the McGregor Isles area, south of Fort Myers.</p><p>The average depth of wells tapping the lower Hawthorn aquifer is 572 feet (174 metres); the average depth of wells tapping both the lower Hawthorn and Suwannee aquifers is 858 feet (262 metres). Few wells tap only the Suwannee aquifer. The average length of casing in wells tapping the lower Hawthorn aquifer is 170 feet (52 metres), whereas the average length in wells tapping both aquifers is only 179 feet (55 metres). Flow rates range from 20 to 750 gallons per minute (1 to 47 litres per second) and average 233 gallons per minute (15 litres per second).</p><p>The saline water from the lower Hawthorn and Suwannee aquifers is hard and sulfurous. The dissolved solids, as determined from analyses of 31 samples,ranged from 700 to 3,300 mg/1 (milligrams per litre) and averaged 1,936 mg/1. The chloride concentrations ranged from 160 to 1,600 mg/1 and averaged 869 mg/l. The calcium magnesium hardness ranged from 110 to 1,000 mg/1 and averaged 625 mg/l. Sulfate concentrations ranged from 92 to 800 mg/1 and averaged 289 mg/l.</p><p>Although the mineral content is high, water from the lower Hawthorn and Suwannee aquifers has been used in the past for many purposes, particularly for irrigation. These beds, exposed in the Bani Khatmah area near the southeastern edge of the Arabian Shield of Saudi Arabia, contain normally graded polymictic conglomerate, commonly in fluvial channels cut into mature quartz sandstone. None of the features observed suggest deposition in a glacial environment. The conglomerate beds constitute a laterally and vertically restricted facies about 150 km wide in the quartz-sand facies of the Wajid.</p><p>Recent palynological evidence suggests that the Wajid Sandstone is of Cambrian or Ordovician age. The conglomerate of the Wajid is probably derived from locally uplifted Precambrian rocks in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. S. Geological Survey (USGS) first began work in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1950 under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Finance and National Economy. The basic objective of the work was to investigate the mineral and water resource potential in western Saudi Arabia, but little was known of the region and it therefore was necessary to prepare geographic and geologic maps. Aerial photographs were taken and controlled mosaics produced, some paid for by the USGS but most paid for by the Saudi Arabian government, and reconnaissance geologic mapping was undertaken until the USGS team left Saudi Arabia in 1955. This mapping, in cooperation with mapping of the Arabian American Oil Company, was compiled as a series of scale 1:500,000 geographic and geologic maps in Arabic and English covering all of Saudi Arabia. A total of 42 of these maps were prepared. Three scale 1:2,000,000 geographic and geologic maps in Arabic and English, covering the Arabian Peninsula, also were prepared from this work. All of the maps were printed in the United States and published by the USGS, the last in 1963.</p><p>Other work done by the USGS between 1950 and 1955 included locating and examining ancient mines, indentifying the Wadi Fatima oolitic iron deposit and other iron deposits in northwest Saudi Arabia, and advising on many water supply problems including those for Riyadh, Qizan, Qunfudhah, Rabigh, Yenbo, Umm Lejh, and Al Wajh. When the inevitable deviations from perfect linearity occur, one must then find the straight line course that best approximates the actual observation path. Classical least squares (regression) does not solve this problem, because the line thus fitted depends upon which coordinate is taken as the dependent variable.</p><p>A coordinate-free solution is obtained by minimizing the sum of squares of normal distances between the line and the observation points. As in classical least squares, the line of best fit passes through the geometrical centroid of the observation points. The slope of this line, however, is closer to 1.0 than the slope of the classical regression line. The work for this second annual data report was financed by the National Park Service. The work for the first annual, report (Larson, 1974) was financed jointly by the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and&nbsp;the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>Continuous recorders were used to monitor water levels in Devils Hole, two observation wells, and the flow from four springs. Also, monthly readings were made on two wells to help define a general trend of ground-water levels. Also, monthly meter readings of six electrically powered irrigation wells provided a record of power consumption, which in turn is a measure of the amount of water pumped.</p><p>The purpose of the work is to observe the effects of groundwater withdrawals for irrigation on the level in Devils Hole and the flow from the major springs in the area.
