The first recordings from the network were obtained in late September 1971. The first earthquakes to be located with data from the network occurred in October 1971.
This earthquake catalog, which is the first to be compiled for the USGS Alaska network, presents origin times, focal coordinates and magnitudes for 210 shocks occurring in the second quarter of 1972 (except from June 15 to 23) in south-central Alaska, primarily in the Cook Inlet region. Readings from a total of 18 stations were used to locate the shocks. To supplement the readings from the 10 USGS stations that were operative during this quarter, arrival times were obtained from 6 stations operated by the Palmer Seismological Observatory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and 2 stations operated by the Geophysical Institute of the University of Alaska (U of A).
The data in this catalog are the most detailed and precise earthquake data compiled to date for earthquakes within the Cook Inlet region. Earthquakes in south-central Alaska as small as magnitude 3.0 have been routinely located by the National Earthquake Information Center of NOAA (currently the National Earthquake Information Service of USGS) since the great Alaska earthquake of 1964 and published in the reports \"Preliminary Determination of Epicenters\" (PDE). In contrast the shocks included in this catalog are as small as magnitude 1.0 and most are smaller than magnitude 3.0. Data for the larger historic earthquakes in south-central Alaska have been tabulated by Davis and Echols (1962) and U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (1966).
The locations of the eleven stations of the NCER seismograph network are plotted in Figure 1 and listed in Table 1 along with the additional stations from which readings were obtained. The USGS stations have single, vertical-component seismometers except for NKA and SKL, which also have two horizontal seismometers. The station ERN was installed in the summer of 1971, however the telemetry circuit was not available until September 1972.

The tabulated ages are systematized according to year and state. All ages published during a specific year (i.e. 1965) are grouped together, with the ages listed under the name of the state in which the sample was collected. The states are alphabetized. The dated sample is described as to rock type, location, material analyzed, age(s) determined, radiometric method used, and published reference (by first author only). The complete reference is listed at the end of the tabulation for each specific year. To answer questions about geologic interpretation, decay constants, or location, one must review the source reference.

Geological Survey personnel mapped the geology and collected stream-sediment and rock samples for spectrographic and chemical analysis; Bureau of Mines personnel examined the known placer and lode claims. The areas examined include: (1) the upper drainage of Red Cap Creek in Humboldt County, adjoining the northwest part of the Salmon-Trinity Alps Primitive Area; (2) an area in Trinity County south of the Primitive Area including the drainage of Big French Creek and the canyon of North Fork Trinity River from Hobo Gulch Forest Camp to the junction with East Fork of North Fork; (3) an area, also south of the Primitive Area and in Trinity County, including East Fork of North Fork from Manzanita Flat to Squaw Gulch, and the drainages of Indian Creek, Squaw Gulch, lower East Branch, and lower Yellow Jacket Creek; (4) the drainage of St. Clair Creek in Siskiyou County north of the Primitive Area; and (5) a small area on New River from the junction of Slide and Virgin Creeks downstream to the mouth of Barron Creek that was previously mapped by the Geological Survey (Hotz and others, 1972) but had not been studied by the Bureau of Mines.

In the report area the Meadow Creek fault is covered by deposits of Quaternary glacial debris ranging in thickness from several meters to more than 30 meters. Two other highly anomalous areas--one of Au, Zn, and Hg, and one of Zn, Ag, Hg, and Mo--correlate with silicified granodiorite along the trace of the Meadow Creek fault. These anomalies are not related to hnown Ore deponits and merit further investigation. The enrichment of metals in mull ash in the area of thick glacial debris suggests that the metals migrate from bedrock upward through the glacial debris, are taken up by the forest vegetation, and are concentrated in the mull as the litter from the vegetation-decays. This model proposes that the NTS is undergoing extension in a N. 50 ? W.-S. 50 ? E. direction coincident with the minimum principal stress direction. The model is supported by (1) a tectonic similarity between a belt of NTS Quaternary faulting and part of the Nevada-California seismic belt, for which northwest-southeast extension has been suggested; (2) historic northeast- trending natural- and explosion-produced fractures in the NTS; (3) the virtual absence in the NTS of northwest-trending Quaternary faults; (4) the character of north-trending faults and basin configuration in the Yucca Flat area, which suggest a component of right-lateral displacement and post-10 m.y. (million year) oblique separation of the sides of the north-trending depression; (5) seismic evidence suggesting a north- to northwest-trending tension axis; (6) strain measurements, which indicate episodes of northwest-southeast extension within a net northeast-southwest compression; (7) a stress estimate based on tectonic cracking that indicates near-surface northwest-southeast-directed tension, and two stress measurements indicating an excess (tectonic) maximum principal compressive stress in a northeast-southwest direction at depths of about 1,000 feet (305 m); and (8) enlargement of some drill holes in Yucca Flat in a northwest-southeast direction. \r\n\r\nIt is inferred that the stress episode resulting in the formation of deep alluvium-filled trenches began somewhere between 10 and possibly less than 4 m.y. ago in the NTS and is currently active.
