The declining quality of breeding forest tracts in North America is one possible cause for the apparent decline of some neotropical migratory birds, such as the wood thrush. In Georgia, however, wood thrush populations have declined during a period of increasing pine forest area and larger patch sizes. We hypothesized that forest management practices such as thinning and prescribed burning might create unsuitable habitat for wood thrushes. We conducted a four-year before/after, treatment/control experiment at the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge in central Georgia to study to the effects of a treatment of thinning and prescribed burning on wood thrush demographic parameters. We simultaneously monitored wood thrush adults and juveniles with mark-recapture, radio-telemetry, nest searches, and plot-map surveys. Our analyses showed that wood thrushes were less likely to emigrate from the study compartments after the treatment, and wood thrushes exhibited some tendency to increase preference for hardwood habitats and decrease preference for pine habitats following the treatment. However, we observed no effects of treatment on nest success, adult survival, and adult and juvenile dispersal distances. We also found that female wood thrushes had lower survival rates than males during the breeding season, and we documented large-scale, within-year dispersal movements of adult (up to 17 km) and juvenile (up to 7 km) wood thrushes. We conclude that landscape level habitat quantity and quality must be considered during songbird management decisions. The documentation of sex- and age-specific wood thrush survival and movement rates was critical for construction of a set of population models. We used three stochastic models to learn more about wood thrush population dynamics and make predictions about population growth rates, reproductive success, and the effect of habitat changes on wood thrush populations. The simplest source/sink population model suggests that the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge's wood thrush population is probably stable or increasing, and wood thrush populations in treated areas had higher growth rates than birds in untreated areas. We were able to use the individual-based model of wood thrush productivity to predict fecundity, a parameter that we could not measure directly in the field. Again, females on treated areas had higher fecundity than birds on untreated areas. Our spatially-based model predicted that wood thrush populations should respond positively to predicted changes in the age/size class structure of the Refuge's pine forests. Our model also showed that most wood thrushes leave the Refuge's forest compartments during the breeding season, and these dispersal movements are extremely important to understanding and managing wood thrush populations. The use of prescribed burning and retention shelterwood silviculture at the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge does not appear to negatively affect the local wood thrush population. Continued use of the current management regime should result in adequate nesting, foraging, and escape habitats for wood thrushes. However, landscape-level habitat availability and quality, including lands outside the Refuge, must be considered when making management decisions that may affect wood thrushes.","language":"English","publisher":"Thesis (Ph. Protocols for trapping adult Roseate Terns that reduce the chances of nest desertion, neglect of chicks, and injury to adults were developed in the early 1980s, but neither short-term nor long-term effects of research activities on this endangered species have been fully investigated. Therefore, this study had the following main objectives: 1) examine long-term data (1978-1996) to determine if trapping activities have had a major effect on annual reproductive success of a Roseate Tern colony, 2) evaluate the effects of trapping adult terns on reproductive success and chick growth, and 3) evaluate the effects of handling chicks on their growth and survival. There were no significant correlations between measures of trapping disturbance and annual reproductive success in 1978-1996 for the Falkner Island (Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge, Connecticut) colony, suggesting that trapping from late incubation through chick rearing using the field protocols described herein does not have a major effect on nesting success of Roseate Terns. In 1987-1996, adult trapping did not reduce prefledging survival of first-hatched chicks, and reduced survival of second-hatched chicks only in 1994 and 1995. Results of more detailed research in 1994-1996 suggest that Roseate Terns may be susceptible to trapping effects only when also faced with extreme conditions such as low food availability and/or high predation pressure. Trapping effects did not occur in most years under apparently average or typical conditions, and otherwise seem to be much less important than other factors affecting nesting success (e.g., predation and food availability). Analyses of chick growth data from 1987-1996 showed that while trapping significantly reduced early growth compared to untrapped controls, most of these effects disappeared after controlling for variation due to laying variables and other indices of parental age and quality. Trapping had little or no effect on later growth (indices of fledgling quality) and thus is unlikely to affect postfledging survival and fitness. For chicks whose parents were trapped, the sex of the adult(s), timing of trapping during the nesting stage, and interval between trapping events (if both parents were trapped) had little or no effect on growth. Daily or near-daily handling of chicks did not significantly affect their growth, prefledging survival, or postfledging survival. These results suggest that while trapping adult Roseate Terns can sometimes affect reproductive success and early chick growth and should be taken into account during research, trapping effects tend to be minor, short-lived, and unlikely to affect overall population health. While the full implications for population health and individual fitness are not entirely clear, there appears to be little cause for concern that trapping and banding activities are a significant problem for Roseate Terns. However, this qualitative assessment of the biological significance of trapping effects needs empirical testing. There remains a practical need to explore the ramifications of trapping effects and to consider local conditions when planning trapping activities. We also need to consider how investigator-induced effects might affect research results, and to balance potential effects of research activities against the value of the information gained.","language":"English","publisher":"M.S. These water samples were collected and analyzed as part of the initial\r\nresearch investigations on sulfur redox speciation in the hot springs of Yellowstone and to document\r\nchemical changes in overflows that affect major ions, redox species, and trace elements. The sulfur\r\nredox speciation research is a collaboration between the State University of New York (SUNY) at\r\nStony Brook and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Four hot springs, Ojo Caliente, Azure, Frying\r\nPan, and Angel Terrace, were studied in detail. Analyses were performed adjacent to the sampling\r\nsite or in an on-site mobile lab truck constructed by the USGS, or later in a USGS laboratory.\r\nWater temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, D.O., and dissolved H2S were determined\r\nadjacent to the sample source at the time of sampling. Alkalinity and F- were determined on-site on\r\nthe day of sample collection. Thiosulfate and polythionates were determined as soon as possible\r\n(minutes to hours later) by ion chromatography (IC). Other major anions (Cl-, SO4\r\n2-, Br-) also were\r\ndetermined on-site by IC within two days of sample collection. Ammonium, Fe(II), and Fe(total)\r\nwere determined on-site by ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometry within two days of sample\r\ncollection. Later in the USGS laboratory, densities were determined. Concentrations of Ca, Mg,\r\nLi, Na, and K were determined by flame atomic absorption and emission (Na, K) spectrometry.\r\nConcentrations of Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe(total), K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Si, Sr,\r\nV, and Zn were determined by inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Trace\r\nconcentrations of Al and Mg were determined by Zeeman-corrected graphite furnace atomic\r\nabsorption spectrometry.\r\nThree important conclusions from the sampling and analyses are: (1) variability in H2S\r\nconcentrations can be caused as much by sampling and preservation artifacts as by actual variations\r\nin water composition over time, (2) historical determinations of S2O3\r\n2- were subject to\r\noverestimation, most likely because of inadequate preservation leading to H2S oxidation, and (3)\r\nS2O3\r\n2- is a common constituent of hot spring waters.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr98574","usgsCitation":"Ball, J.W., Nordstrom, D.K., Cunningham, K.M., Schoonen, M., Xu, Y., and DeMonge, J.M., 1998, Water-chemistry and on-site sulfur-speciation data for selected springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 1994-1995: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-574, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98574.","productDescription":"35 p.","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":170179,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":4136,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://wwwbrr.cr.usgs.gov/projects/GWC_chemtherm/pubs/ofr%2098-574.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wyoming","otherGeospatial":"Yellowstone National Park","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -111.46728515624999,\n 44.11125397357155\n ],\n [\n -109.9456787109375,\n 44.11125397357155\n ],\n [\n -109.9456787109375,\n 45.158800738352106\n ],\n [\n -111.46728515624999,\n 45.158800738352106\n ],\n [\n -111.46728515624999,\n 44.11125397357155\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e9e4b07f02db5e93c7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ball, James W.","contributorId":38946,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ball","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":241176,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nordstrom, D. The packer probe consists of a downhole packer inflated with water removed from the borehole by an in-line submersible pump, and a differential pressure transducer calibrated to measure the hydraulic-head difference between the zones above and below the packer. Analysis of the packer data is based on a numerical model that predicts the water levels above and below the packer for a given set of aquifer zones of specified hydraulic head and transmissivity. Various computations are used to indicate the sensitivity of the packer measurements to the hydraulic head and transmissivity contrasts between aquifer zones.

The wireline-packer probe was field tested in a series of open-bedrock boreholes in Belvidere, Illinois, at a site where vertical hydraulic-head differences are produced in a horizontally stratified aquifer by water production from an underlying aquifer. Analysis of the wireline-packer data produced estimates of hydraulic-head gradient and aquifer-zone transmissivity consistent with results from straddle-packer hydraulic tests. However, the wireline-packer data also indicated that there are significant variations of vertical hydraulic gradient with depth, and that the gradient is sharply reversed near the bottom of the boreholes. This result is consistent with upward ambient flow measured on previous occasions near the bottom of these boreholes, and has important consequences for the monitoring of ground-water flow at the study site.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr98413","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Paillet, F.L., Hess, A., and Williams, J., 1998, Design, operation, and data analysis for a wireline packer system in open boreholes, with field-test results from Belvidere, Illinois: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-413, iv, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98413.","productDescription":"iv, 23 p.","costCenters":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":156837,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0413/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53275,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0413/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Illinois","city":"Belvidere","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.88351440429688,\n              42.23512673690763\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.80043029785156,\n              42.23512673690763\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.80043029785156,\n              42.27680072484333\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.88351440429688,\n              42.27680072484333\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.88351440429688,\n              42.23512673690763\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667da9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Paillet, Frederick L.","contributorId":63820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paillet","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191353,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hess, A.E.","contributorId":71979,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hess","given":"A.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191354,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Williams, John H. 0000-0002-6054-6908 jhwillia@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6054-6908","contributorId":1553,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Williams","given":"John","email":"jhwillia@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":474,"text":"New York Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":191352,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

More than 700 hours of observations were used to determine the temporal and spatial use patterns by people and bears as well as the frequency, nature, and outcome of bear-human interactions. Bears altered their temporal and spatial use of the river to accommodate human activity, seeking times and places where human use was lowest. Bear-human interactions were primarily the result of people venturing into areas of concentrated bear activity, rather than bears entering areas heavily used by people. Approximately one-fourth of bears involved in bear-human interactions left the river, not to return for several hours. Bears acted differently in river zones dominated by people than in zones dominated by bears in that they spent less time on the river, less time resting, and more time moving about in human-dominated zones. The data suggest that as long as there are areas where bears can avoid human activity, they will seek them to gain access to salmon. If, however, human use of the river continues to increase as it has the past decade, the day may come when there will be no more room for bears.
","language":"English","publisher":"International Association for Bear Research and Management","usgsCitation":"Smith, T.S., 1998, Effects of human activity on brown bear use of the Kulik River, Alaska: Ursus, v. 13, p. 257-267.","startPage":"257","endPage":"267","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":337781,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":337780,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.bearbiology.com/index.php?id=ursvol13_10","text":"Volume 13 on Journal's Website"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Katmai National Park, Kulik River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -155.1592254638672,\n              58.956736654772236\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.06206512451172,\n              58.956736654772236\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.06206512451172,\n              59.00715799039951\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.1592254638672,\n              59.00715799039951\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.1592254638672,\n              58.956736654772236\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"13","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58cba425e4b0849ce97dc7ba","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Tom S.","contributorId":179380,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Tom","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":684860,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The calculation of resources is only one aspect\r\nof the assessment. Without thorough documentation of the coal resource study and the methods used, the\r\nresults of our study could be misinterpreted. The task of calculating coal resources included many steps,\r\nthe use of several commercial software programs, and the incorporation of custom programs. The\r\nmethods used for calculating coal resources for the Wyodak-Anderson coal zone vary slightly from the\r\nmethods used in other study areas, and by other workers in the National Coal Resource Assessment.\r\nThe Wyodak-Anderson coal zone includes up to 10 coal beds in any given location. The net coal\r\nthickness of the zone at each data point location was calculated by summing the thickness of all of the\r\ncoal beds that were greater than 2.5 ft thick. The amount of interburden is not addressed or reported in\r\nthis coal resource assessment. The amount of overburden reported is the amount of rock above the\r\nstratigraphically highest coal bed in the zone. The resource numbers reported do not include coal within\r\nmine or lease areas, in areas containing mapped Wyodak-Anderson clinker, or in areas where the coal is\r\nextrapolated to be less than 2.5 ft thick.\r\nThe resources of the Wyodak-Anderson coal zone are reported in Ellis and others (1998). A\r\ngeneral description of how the resources were calculated is included in that report. The purpose of this\r\nreport is to document in more detail some of the parameters and methods used, define our spatial data,\r\ncompare resources calculated using different grid options and calculation methods, and explain the\r\napplication of confidence limits to the resource calculation.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr98789B","usgsCitation":"Ellis, M.S., Gunther, G., Flores, R.M., Stricker, G.D., Ochs, A.M., and Schuenemeyer, J.H., 1998, Preliminary report on methodology for calculating coal resources of the Wyodak-Anderson coal zone, Powder River basin, Wyoming and Montana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-789, 41 p.; illus. incl. sects., 7 tables, sketch maps, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98789B.","productDescription":"41 p.; illus. incl. sects., 7 tables, sketch maps","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":161384,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":2587,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/ofr-98-0789-b/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65df9d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, Margaret S. mellis@usgs.gov","contributorId":198,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ellis","given":"Margaret","email":"mellis@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":205030,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gunther, Gregory L.","contributorId":8496,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gunther","given":"Gregory L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205031,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Flores, Romeo M. rflores@usgs.gov","contributorId":71984,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Flores","given":"Romeo","email":"rflores@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":165,"text":"Central Energy Resources Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":205034,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Stricker, Gary D. gstricker@usgs.gov","contributorId":87163,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stricker","given":"Gary","email":"gstricker@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":165,"text":"Central Energy Resources Team","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":205035,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Ochs, Allan M.","contributorId":57513,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ochs","given":"Allan","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205033,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Schuenemeyer, John H.","contributorId":54227,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schuenemeyer","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":205032,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Generally, the USGS provides one-half of the program funding, and local cooperators are required to provide matching funds. Cooperation has been primarily with the Chester County Water Resources Authority (CCWRA), with participation from the Chester County Health Department and funding from the Chester County Board of Commissioners. Municipalities and the Red Clay Valley Association also have provided part of the funding for several projects. This report describes how the long-term partnership between the USGS and Chester County, Pa., provides the County with the information that it needs for sound water-resources management.

The CCWRA was created in 1961, primarily for land acquisition and planning for flood-control and water-supply projects. With the backing of the Brandywine Valley Association, the CCWRA started its first cooperative project with the USGS in 1969. It was a study of the water-quality condition of Chester County streams with an emphasis on benthic macroinvertebrates and stream chemistry.

The kinds of projects and data collection conducted by the USGS have changed with the needs of Chester County and the mission of the CCWRA. Chester County is experiencing rapid population growth (it had the tenth-highest rate of growth in the nation from 1980 to 1990). This growth places considerable stress on water resources and has caused the CCWRA to broaden its focus from flood control to water-supply planning, water quality, and ground-water and surface-water management. The results of USGS studies are used by the CCWRA and other County agencies, including the Planning Commission, Health Department, and Parks and Recreation Department, for conducting day-to-day activities and planning for future growth. The results also are used by the CCWRA to provide guidance and technical assistance to municipalities, water suppliers, industrial dischargers, watershed and conservancy associations and other civic organizations, state and Federal agencies, river basin commissions, and the private sector.

The cooperative water-resources program, which is described in the following sections, benefits not only the citizens of Chester County but also serves the interests of the Federal Government. Innovative studies conducted in Chester County provide methods and interpretations that often can be used nationwide, and the headwaters of several interstate drainages lie within the County. Major program thrusts include collection of surface-water, ground-water, and water-quality data and interpretive studies. The use of this information also is described.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/fs06798","collaboration":"Prepared in Such processes include a dangerous type of landslide, the debris flow (Ellen and others, 1997) as well as other modes of slope failure that damage property but rarely threaten life directly?slumping, translational sliding, and earthflow (Wentworth and others, 1997). Different types of topographic information at both local and regional scales are helpful in assessing the likelihood of slope failure and the mapping the extent of its past activity, as well as addressing \r\nother issues in hazard mitigation and land-use policy. The USGS operates and maintains a network of more than 7,000 such stations across the nation (Mason and Wieger, 1995). These gaging stations, used to produce records of stage and streamflow data, are operated in cooperation with local, state, and other federal agencies. The USGS office in Indianapolis operates a statewide network of more than 170 gaging stations. The instrumentation at USGS gaging stations monitors and records river information, primarily river stage (fig. 1). As technological advances are made, many USGS gaging stations are being retrofitted with electronic instrumentation to monitor and record river data. Electronic instrumentation facilitates transmission of real-time or near real-time river data for use by government agencies in such flood-related tasks as operating flood-control structures and ordering evacuations.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Indianapolis, IN","doi":"10.3133/fs02998","usgsCitation":"Morlock, S.E., 1998, U.S. Geological This publication attempts to apply much of the geologic, geochemical, geophysical, and mineral occurrence information to a single objective focused on producing a mineral resource assessment for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. However, the value of this publication lies not within the results of the mineral resource assessment nor within the interactive PDF files which can be viewed on the screen, but within the geologic, geochemical, geophysical, and mineral occurrence digital map coverages and databases which can be used for their own unique applications.\r\n\r\nThe mineral resource assessment of Puerto Rico represents compilation of several decades of mineral investigations and studies. These investigations have been the joint efforts of the U.S. Geological Survey, the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources, and the University of Puerto Rico. This report contains not only the mineral-resource assessment, but also much of the scientific evidence upon which the assessment was based.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The early results of this study raised broader concerns in Oakland County about the quality of groundwater in general and drinking water in particular. In response to these concerns, Oakland County worked with the USGS and the Center for Applied Environmental Research at the University of Michigan - Flint (CAER) to study distributions of arsenic, nitrate and chloride in groundwater, with emphasis on sites where concentrations of these constituents exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) and Secondary Maximum Contaminant Levels (SMCLs) set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Emphasis was placed on sites that exceeded Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) and Secondary Maximum Contaminant Levels (SMCL) set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The maps were based on historical data from records compiled by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ). The USGS collected and analyzed samples to test the water quality in a number of these wells to confirm the overall validity of the historical records. The maps showed that each of the chemical constituents is widely distributed. High concentrations of arsenic are most common in the northern and northwestern parts of the county. Nitrate has been detected in groundwater in most townships but samples with concentrations above the MCL tend to cluster around high-density lakeshore communities. Chlorides are the most widely distributed and samples with concentrations above the SMCL also cluster in high-density lakeshore communities.
\n
To provide homeowners with more detailed information on the distribution of these water-quality indicators, a series of township maps have been prepared. These maps highlight square-mile sections that contain, or are close to, wells in which concentrations of arsenic, nitrate, or chloride greater than the (S)MCL have been detected.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs14098","usgsCitation":"Aichele, S., Hill-Rowley, R., and Malone, M., 1998, Arsenic, nitrate, and chloride in groundwater, Groveland Township, Oakland County, Michigan: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 140-98, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs14098.","productDescription":"2 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":31956,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0140/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"1.18 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":139,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://mi.water.usgs.gov/pdf/fs14098v7.pdf","text":"Report-reprint","size":"177.59 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":118200,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0140/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","county":"Oakland County","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"id\":\"1291\",\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Oakland\",\"state\":\"MI\"},\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-83.4546,42.8798],[-83.2227,42.887],[-83.1025,42.8884],[-83.0986,42.801],[-83.0905,42.6238],[-83.0867,42.5355],[-83.0843,42.4463],[-83.3264,42.4416],[-83.4403,42.4393],[-83.553,42.4351],[-83.6669,42.4312],[-83.6733,42.5196],[-83.6863,42.7822],[-83.6902,42.871],[-83.5737,42.8744],[-83.4541,42.8766],[-83.4546,42.8798]]]}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db672cc6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Aichele, Stephen S. 0000-0002-3397-7921 saichele@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3397-7921","contributorId":194508,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aichele","given":"Stephen S.","email":"saichele@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":430,"text":"National Mapping Program","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":150681,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hill-Rowley, Richard","contributorId":76293,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hill-Rowley","given":"Richard","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150683,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Malone, Matt","contributorId":73577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Malone","given":"Matt","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":150682,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Barnyards and crop- lands usually are identified as the primary rural sources of phosphorus. Numerous questions have arisen about which of these two sources to control and about the method currently being used by the NFS program to compare phosphorus loads from barnyards and croplands. To evaluate the method, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, used phosphorus-load and sediment-load data from streams and phosphorus concentrations in soils from the Otter Creek Watershed (located in the Sheboygan River Basin: fig. 1) in conjunction with two computer-based models.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs16898","usgsCitation":"Wierl, J.A., Giddings, E.M., and Bannerman, R.T., 1998, Evaluation of a method for comparing phosphorus loads from barnyards and croplands in Otter Creek Watershed, Wisconsin: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 168-98, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs16898.","productDescription":"4 p.","numberOfPages":"4","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":815,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://wi.water.usgs.gov/pubs/FS-168-98/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":118174,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0168/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34147,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0168/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Wisconsin","otherGeospatial":"Otter Creek, Sheboygan","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.10005187988281,\n              43.61619382369188\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.10005187988281,\n              43.872158236415416\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.76290893554688,\n              43.872158236415416\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.76290893554688,\n              43.61619382369188\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.10005187988281,\n              43.61619382369188\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5faf80","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wierl, Judy A.","contributorId":106110,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wierl","given":"Judy","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153367,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Giddings, Elise M.
