Many of the US government scientific agencies have some funds earmarked for research into past and (or) future climate change (National Science and Technology Council, 1997). The Mississippi Basin Carbon Project (MBCP) is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) effort in global change research . The project is motivated by the need to increase our understanding of the role of terrestrial carbon in the global carbon cycle, particularly in the temperate latitudes of North America. The global land area between 30 O and 60 O N is thought to be a large sink for atmospheric CO2 (IPCC, 1996). The identity of this sink is unknown, but is in part the soil and sediment that makes up the upper several meters of the Earth's surface. The MBCP focuses on the Mississippi River basin, the third largest river system in the world (fig. 1), that drains an area of 3.3 x 10 6 km 2 (1.27 x 10 6 mi 2 ). The Mississippi River basin includes more than 40 percent of the land surface, and is the home of more than one-third of the population, of the conterminous United States. Because climate, vegetation, and land use vary greatly within the Mississippi River basin, the primary terrestrial sinks for carbon need to be identified and quantified for representative parts of the basin. The primary goal of the MBCP is to quantify the interactive effects of land-use, erosion, sedimentation, and soil development on carbon storage and nutrient cycles within the Mississippi River basin. The project includes spatial analysis of a wide variety of geographic data, estimation of whole-basin and sub-basin carbon and sediment budgets, development and implementation of terrestrial carbon-cycle models, and site-specific field studies of relevant processes. Areas can be studied and compared, and estimates can be made for whole-basin carbon storage and flux.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr9836","issn":"0566-8174","usgsCitation":"1998, Carbon storage and late Holocene chronostratigraphy of a Mississippi River deltaic marsh, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana (Version 1.0 ): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-36, 66 p. :ill. In addition, the possible effect of an experimental channel excavation to increase flows in Ophir Creek was evaluated. Stream discharges were monitored continuously at one site and measured intermittently at five other sites from October 1991 to May 1997, and ground-water levels were measured weekly in seven wells from July 1995 to October 1996. All measured ground-water levels were less than 11.4 feet below land surface. The data indicate that ground-water levels are closely related to rain and snowmelt, which in turn are related to water levels in Ophir Creek. Six of seven wells had peak water levels concurrent with peak flows in Ophir Creek. In one well, both maximum and minimum water levels coincided with maximum and minimum streamflow in Ophir Creek. Deepening part of the Ophir Creek channel by excavation has increased streamflows along the deepened reach; however, some of this additional flow infiltrates into the stream channel downstream from the excavated reach. The deepened reach flowed intermittently before the excavation and continues to dewater during prolonged periods of no precipitation.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr98199","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Neal, E., 1998, Hydrologic investigation of the Ophir Creek watershed near Yakutat, Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-199, iv, 33 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.; 8 illus.; 4 plates; 4 tables, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98199.","productDescription":"iv, 33 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.; 8 illus.; 4 plates; 4 tables","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":156293,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0199/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":19491,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/0199/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a1ae4b07f02db606935","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Neal, Edward G.","contributorId":68775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Neal","given":"Edward G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":191204,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

One aspect of the study involved linking inorganic and organic diagenesis to late Paleozoic tectonism and hydrothermal fluid-flow events in the region.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office ;\r\nFor sale by U.S. Geological Survey Information Services,","doi":"10.3133/pp1597","usgsCitation":"Pitman, J.K., Henry, M.E., and Seyler, B., 1998, Reservoir quality and diagenetic evolution of Upper Mississippian rocks in the Illinois Basin; influence of a regional hydrothermal fluid-flow event during late diagenesis: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1597, 24 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1597.","productDescription":"24 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":117603,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1597/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":33682,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1597/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b12d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pitman, Janet K. 0000-0002-0441-779X jpitman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0441-779X","contributorId":767,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pitman","given":"Janet","email":"jpitman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[{"id":164,"text":"Central Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":152548,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Henry, Mitchell E.","contributorId":57447,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Henry","given":"Mitchell","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152550,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Seyler, Beverly","contributorId":51730,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seyler","given":"Beverly","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152549,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

We initiated a banding study in 2 areas in the Coastal Plain of South Carolina to estimate population demographic parameters of doves to generate hypotheses that address the purported population declines. During 1992-96, we banded &gt;2,300 doves and examined &gt;6,000 individuals during harvest bag checks. An age-specific band recovery model with time- and area-specific recovery rates, and constant survival rates, was chosen for estimation via Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC), likelihood ratio, and goodness-of-fit criteria. After-hatching-year (AHY) annual survival rate was 0.359 (SE = 0.056), and hatching-year (HY) annual survival rate was 0.118 (SE = 0.042). Average estimated recruitment per adult female into the prehunting season population was 3.40 (SE = 1.25) and 2.32 (SE = 0.46) for the 2 study areas. Our movement data support earlier hypotheses of nonmigratory breeding and harvested populations in South Carolina. Low survival rates and estimated population growth rate in the study areas may be representative only of small-scale areas that are heavily managed for dove hunting. Source-sink theory was used to develop a model of region-wide populations that is composed of source areas with positive growth rates and sink areas of declining growth. We suggest management of mourning doves in the Southeast might benefit from improved understanding of local population dynamics, as opposed to regional-scale population demographics.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.2307/3802011","usgsCitation":"McGowan, D.P., and Otis, D.L., 1998, Population demographics of two local South Carolina mourning dove populations: Journal of Wildlife Management, v. 62, no. 4, p. 1443-1451, https://doi.org/10.2307/3802011.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1443","endPage":"1451","costCenters":[{"id":135,"text":"Biological Resources Division","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":227997,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Carolina","otherGeospatial":"Coastal Plain of South Carolina","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -78.83066316401778,\n              34.134834334044896\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.96713501123433,\n              34.134834334044896\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.96713501123433,\n              32.08716615133787\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.83066316401778,\n              32.08716615133787\n            ],\n            [\n              -78.83066316401778,\n              34.134834334044896\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"62","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a7d38e4b0c8380cd79e0a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McGowan, Donald P. By 1994, a broad field of lava, nearly 1 km<sup>3</sup> in volume and 12 km wide at the coast, had buried 87 km<sup>2</sup> of the volcano's south flank. The initial six months of fissure eruptions (episodes 1-3) were followed by three years of episodic lava fountaining from the Pu'u 'Ō'ō vent (episodes 4–47). In July 1986, after two days of fissure eruptions up- and downrift from Pu'u 'Ō'ō (episodes 48a and 48b), the eruption shifted to a new vent, Kūpaianaha, 3.5 km downrift. For the next five-and-a-half years (episode 48), Kūpaianaha was the site of nearly continuous low-level effusion. The 49th episode occurred in November 1991, when several fissures opened between Pu'u 'Ō'ō and Kūpaianaha (see Mangan and others, 1995, Bulletin of Volcanology, v. 57, p. 127-135). This three-week-long outburst was the result of the waning output of the Kūpaianaha vent, which finally died in February 1992 (see Kauahikaua and others, 1996, Bulletin of Volcanology, v. 57, p. 641-648). </p><p>The third epoch of the eruption began ten days later, when vents opened on the uprift slope of the Pu'u 'Ō'ō cone. Several flank vents erupted over the next two years (episodes 50-53). In the first year, from February 1992 through February 1993, the low-level effusion was interrupted by 21 brief pauses. These ended with the beginning of episode 53 in February 1993, and for the next year, lava effusion was continuous. Episode 53 was ongoing at the end of the interval covered by this report. </p><p>During the years that Kūpaianaha was active, the Pu'u 'Ō'ō conduit gradually evolved into a crater 300 m in diameter as the conduit walls collapsed. Beginning in 1987, an active lava pond was intermittently visible in the bottom of the crater; from 1990 on, the pond was almost continuously present. The Pu'u 'Ō‘ō pond drained at the beginning of episode 49 in November 1991, and the crater floor collapsed. Lava was visible in the crater by early December, and pond overflows resurfaced the crater floor, raising it to its former level of 35 m below the rim by the end of January 1992. </p><p>This report includes flow-field maps and a table giving a) start and stop times of the eruptive episodes and of pauses in the eruption, b) Pu'u 'Ō'ō lava pond and crater-floor elevations, and c) elevations of the episode 50-53 vents and of the floors of the collapse pits that subsequently formed over these vents. A chronology of this interval of the eruption and an interpretation of the data included in this report can be found in Heliker and others (1998, Bulletin of Volcanology, v. 59, p. 381-393). </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr98103","usgsCitation":"Heliker, C., Mangan, M.T., Mattox, T.N., and Kauahikaua, J.P., 1998, The Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō-Kūpaianaha erruption of Kīlauea, November 1991–February 1994: Field data and flow maps (Version 1.1): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 98-103, 11 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr98103.","productDescription":"11 p.","costCenters":[{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":161312,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":9056,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/of98-103/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":340481,"rank":4,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1998/of98-103/of98-103_text_table.pdf","text":"Report","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":108804,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_17757.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"17757"}],"scale":"50000","country":"United States","state":"Hawaii","otherGeospatial":"Kilauea Volcano","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -155.3466796875,\n              19.241143039165962\n            ],\n            [\n              -154.92919921875,\n              19.241143039165962\n            ],\n            [\n              -154.92919921875,\n              19.479539596600667\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.3466796875,\n              19.479539596600667\n            ],\n            [\n              -155.3466796875,\n              19.241143039165962\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","edition":"Version 1.1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a91e4b07f02db6568c2","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Heliker, C. Dye was injected at a site on Piru Creek, and fluorescence of river water was measured continuously at four sites and intermittently at two sites. Discharge measurements were also made at the six sites. The time of travel of the dye, peak dye concentration, and time-variance of time-concentration curves were obtained at each site. The long tails of the time-concentration curves are indicative of sources/sinks within the river, such as riffles and pools, or transient bank storage. A statistical analysis of the data indicates that, in general, the transport characteristics follow Fickian theory.\r\nThese data and previously collected discharge data were used to calibrate a one-dimensional flow model (DAFLOW) and a solute-transport model (BLTM). DAFLOW solves a simplified form of the diffusion-wave equation and uses empirical relations between flow rate and cross-sectional area, and flow rate and channel width. BLTM uses the velocity data from DAFLOW and solves the advection-dispersion transport equation, including first-order decay.\r\nThe simulations of dye transport indicated that (1) ground-water recharge explains the loss of dye mass in the middle, ephemeral, subreaches, and (2) ground-water recharge does not explain the loss of dye mass in the uppermost and lowermost, perennial, subreaches. This loss of mass was simulated using a linear decay term. The loss of mass in the perennial subreaches may be caused by a combination of photodecay or adsorption/desorption.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nInformation Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri974275","usgsCitation":"Paybins, K.S., Nishikawa, T., Izbicki, J., and Reichard, E.G., 1998, Statistical analysis and mathematical modeling of a tracer test on the Santa Clara River, Ventura County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4275, iv, 19 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974275.","productDescription":"iv, 19 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":157653,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4275/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54529,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4275/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dde4b07f02db5e254b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Paybins, Katherine S. 0000-0002-3967-5043 kpaybins@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3967-5043","contributorId":2805,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Paybins","given":"Katherine","email":"kpaybins@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":642,"text":"West Virginia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":195033,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Nishikawa, Tracy 0000-0002-7348-3838 tnish@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7348-3838","contributorId":1515,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nishikawa","given":"Tracy","email":"tnish@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":195032,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Izbicki, John A. 0000-0003-0816-4408 jaizbick@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0816-4408","contributorId":1375,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Izbicki","given":"John A.","email":"jaizbick@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":195031,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Reichard, Eric G. 0000-0002-7310-3866 egreich@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7310-3866","contributorId":1207,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reichard","given":"Eric","email":"egreich@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":195030,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

In the northern Everglades an apparent effect of these disturbances has been the development and proliferation of dense cattail (</span><i>Typha</i><span>&nbsp;spp. ) stands in areas previously dominated by sawgrass (</span><i>Cladium jamaicense</i><span>&nbsp;Crantz) and sloughs. Cattail cover, soil nutrient concentrations, topography and fire history were determined for the Holey Land and Rotenberger Wildlife Management Areas, located in the northern Everglades. These data were analyzed using multiple regression to assess the relative influence of fire, hydrology and soil nutrients on cattail abundance. Holey Land and Rotenberger were overdrained over recent decades which resulted in soil compaction and nutrient accumulation, illustrated by increased soil bulk densities and elevated nutrient storage. Average bulk densities were 0.13 g cm</span><sup>−3</sup><span>&nbsp;for Holey Land and 0.22 g cm</span><sup>−3</sup><span>&nbsp;for Rotenberger. Average total P (TP) stored in the surface 10 cm of soil in Holey Land and Rotenberger were 7 and 13 g m</span><sup>−2</sup><span>, respectively. In contrast, Everglades soils uninfluenced by nutrient enrichment and with less severe overdrainage have bulk densities of 0.07 g cm</span><sup>−3</sup><span>&nbsp;and TP storage of 4 g m</span><sup>−2</sup><span>. Typically, elevated soil P concentrations have been considered a primary factor influencing cattail growth and distribution in the Everglades. With the apparent absence of P limitation in Holey Land and Rotenberger, cattail abundance was influenced by either fire or hydrology. Forty-six percent of the variation of cattail cover in Holey Land was explained by elevation, indicating that increased water depth and duration of flooding have a significant impact on cattail expansion. In Rotenberger, fire was the most influential factor, explaining 57% of the variation in cattail cover. Hydrology was the second most important factor limiting cattail abundance.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0304-3770(97)00089-2","usgsCitation":"Newman, S., Schuette, J., Grace, J.B., Rutchey, K., Fontaine, T., Reddy, K., and Pietrucha, M., 1998, Factors influencing cattail abundance in the northern Everglades: Aquatic Botany, v. 60, no. 3, p. 265-280, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0304-3770(97)00089-2.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"265","endPage":"280","costCenters":[{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":368968,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Holey Land Wildlife Management Area, Northern Everglades, Rotenberger Wildlife Management Area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -80.88546752929688,\n              26.46012332908788\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.88203430175781,\n              26.329729911610876\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.63346862792967,\n              26.334653090413187\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.6396484375,\n              26.360496343302067\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.68702697753906,\n              26.365418213012244\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.69183349609375,\n              26.439835922524356\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.81199645996094,\n              26.437376600127735\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.82366943359375,\n              26.47917793965339\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.8538818359375,\n              26.481021766757866\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.85319519042969,\n              26.46319686677677\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.87173461914062,\n              26.465040949997295\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.88546752929688,\n              26.46012332908788\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"60","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Newman, S.","contributorId":7678,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Newman","given":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774752,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schuette, J.","contributorId":220322,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schuette","given":"J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774753,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grace, James B. 0000-0001-6374-4726 gracej@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6374-4726","contributorId":884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Grace","given":"James","email":"gracej@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":17705,"text":"Wetland and Aquatic Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":455,"text":"National Wetlands Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":774754,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Rutchey, K.","contributorId":35825,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rutchey","given":"K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774755,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Fontaine, T.","contributorId":220323,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Fontaine","given":"T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774756,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Reddy, K.R.","contributorId":28096,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reddy","given":"K.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774757,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6},{"text":"Pietrucha, M.","contributorId":220324,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Pietrucha","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":774758,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":7}]}}

These data generally support geophysical model calculations that predict a +1 to 3 m relative sea-level highstand on oceanic islands due to the Earth’s rheological response to the melting of the last continental ice sheets and subsequent redistribution of meltwater. Both predictions and observations indicate sea level was higher than present in the equatorial Pacific between 5000 and 1500 y B.P. A non-linear relationship exists between the age and elevation of the highstand peak, suggesting that different rates of isostatic adjustment may occur in the Pacific, with the highest rates of sea-level fall following the highstand near the equator. It is important to resolve detailed sea-level histories from insular sites to test and refine models of climatic, oceanographic, and geophysical processes including hydroisostasy, equatorial ocean siphoning, and lithospheric flexure that are invoked as mechanisms affecting relative sea-level position. We use a select subset of the available database meeting specific criteria to examine model relationships of paleosea-surface topography. The verified roughness coefficients which ranged from 0.017 to 0.067, were computed from discharges, channel geometry, and water-surface profiles measured at each of the sites. The information given for each stream segment includes bed and bank descriptions, data tables showing hydraulic components, a plan view, cross-section plots, and color photographs that can be used as a comparison aid in determining roughness coefficients for similarly channeled streams. Relations derived from the data presented relate Manning's roughness coefficient (n) to various hydraulic components. For gravel-bed streams, verified roughness coefficients are related to median grain size of the bed material and hydraulic radius resulting in an equation that can be used to transfer results to similar dry-land channels. The equation developed for base values of n for gravel-bed channels in Arizona is significantly different from similarly derived equations for other regions of the United States and the world.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nFor sale by U.S. Geological Survey Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/pp1584","usgsCitation":"Phillips, J.V., and Ingersoll, T.L., 1998, Verification of roughness coefficients for selected natural and constructed stream channels in Arizona: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1584, 77 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1584.","productDescription":"77 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124638,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1584/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":33461,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1584/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49ace4b07f02db5c638d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Phillips, Jeff V.","contributorId":50510,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Phillips","given":"Jeff","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152380,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ingersoll, Todd L.","contributorId":21952,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ingersoll","given":"Todd","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":152379,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

One-hundred-four VOCs were initially tested.\r\nOf these, 86 are suitable for determination by this method. Selected data are provided for\r\nthe 18 VOCs that were not included. This method also allows for the reporting of\r\nsemiquantitative results for tentatively identified VOCs not included in the list of method\r\ncompounds. Method detection limits, method performance data, preservation study\r\nresults, and blank results are presented.\r\nThe authors describe a procedure for reporting low-concentration detections at\r\nless than the reporting limit. The nondetection value (NDV) is introduced as a statistically\r\ndefined reporting limit designed to limit false positives and false negatives to less than 1\r\npercent. Nondetections of method compounds are reported as ?less than NDV.? Positive\r\ndetections measured at less than NDV are reported as estimated concentrations to alert the\r\ndata user to decreased confidence in accurate quantitation. Instructions are provided for\r\nanalysts to report data at less than the reporting limits. This method can support the use of\r\neither method reporting limits that censor detections at lower concentrations or the use of\r\nNDVs as reporting limits. The data-reporting strategy for providing analytical results at\r\nless than the reporting limit is a result of the increased need to identify the presence or\r\nabsence of environmental contaminants in water samples at increasingly lower\r\nconcentrations.\r\nLong-term method detection limits (LTMDLs) for 86 selected compounds range\r\nfrom 0.013 to 2.452 micrograms per liter (?g/L) and differ from standard method\r\ndetection limits (MDLs) in that the LTMDLs include the long-term variance of multiple\r\ninstruments, multiple operators, and multiple calibrations over a longer time. For these\r\nreasons, LTMDLs are expected to be slightly higher than standard MDLs. Recoveries for\r\nall of the VOCs tested ranged from 36 (tert-butyl formate) to 155 percent\r\n(pentachlorobenzene). The majority of the compounds ranged from 85 to 115 percent\r\nrecovery and had less than 5 percent relative standard deviation for concentrations spiked\r\nbetween 1 to 500 ?g/L in volatile blank-, surface-, and ground-water samples. Recoveries of 60 set spikes at low concentrations ranged from 70 to 114 percent (1,2,3-\r\ntrimethylbenzene and acetone). Recovery data were collected over 6 months with\r\nmultiple instruments, operators, and calibrations.\r\nIn this method, volatile organic compounds are extracted from a water sample by\r\nactively purging with helium. The VOCs are collected onto a sorbent trap, thermally\r\ndesorbed, separated by a Megabore gas chromatographic capillary column, and finally\r\ndetermined by a full-scan quadrupole mass spectrometer. Compound identification is\r\nconfirmed by the gas chromatographic retention time and by the resultant mass spectrum,\r\ntypically identified by three unique ions. An unknown compound detected in a sample\r\ncan be tentatively identified by comparing the unknown mass spectrum to reference\r\nspectra in the mass-spectra computer-data system library compiled by the National\r\nInstitute of Standards and Technology.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr97829","usgsCitation":"Connor, B.F., Rose, D.L., Noriega, M.C., Murtaugh, L.K., and Abney, S.R., 1998, Methods of analysis by the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Laboratory-Determination of 86 volatile organic compounds in water by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, including detections less than reporting limits: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-829, viii, 78 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97829.","productDescription":"viii, 78 p.","costCenters":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":153699,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0829/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":51418,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0829/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":1283,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://nwql.usgs.gov/Public/pubs/OFR97-829/OFR97-829.html","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a54e4b07f02db62bb95","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Connor, Brooke F. bfconnor@usgs.gov","contributorId":3172,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Connor","given":"Brooke","email":"bfconnor@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":186356,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rose, Donna L. 0000-0003-1216-9914 dlrose@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1216-9914","contributorId":4546,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rose","given":"Donna","email":"dlrose@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":5046,"text":"Branch of Analytical Serv (NWQL)","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":186357,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Noriega, Mary C. mnoriega@usgs.gov","contributorId":2553,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Noriega","given":"Mary","email":"mnoriega@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":5046,"text":"Branch of Analytical Serv (NWQL)","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":186355,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Murtaugh, Lucinda K.","contributorId":14247,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Murtaugh","given":"Lucinda","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Abney, Sonja R.","contributorId":62992,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Abney","given":"Sonja","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":186359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

Water samples were collected from four multiple-depth well sites, from different depths within three production wells, and from two nearby streams; these samples were analyzed for major ions, selected trace elements, stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen (delta oxygen-18 and delta deuterium), tritium, and carbon-14. Within the production wells, variations in vertical flowrate with depth were recorded during pumped conditions using a standard spinner tool. Where saturated, the upper 200 feet of unconsolidated deposits contributed as much as 60 percent of the well discharge; deposits at depths greater than 700 feet contributed less than 10 percent. Chemical analyses indicate that three general zones of ground-water quality are present along a north-south section--an oxygenated zone near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains, an oxygen-depleted zone near the San Jacinto Fault, and a deeper zone characterized by concentrations of fluoride greater than 1 mg/L and by a general water-quality composition similar to that of base flow in East Twin Creek. The presence of tritium in water from wells along the section indicates that post-1952 recharge has moved rapidly through the valley-fill aquifer to depths as great as 800 feet. Carbon-14 data indicate that the maximum age of ground water, sampled at depths ranging from 600 to 1,000 feet, is less than 5,000 years before present. Ground water along the study section is much younger than ground water from similar depths in other nearby basins. Delta oxygen-18 and delta deuterium data indicate that as much as 25 percent of the discharge from some wells near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains is water that was imported from northern California. Improved knowledge of depth-dependent ground-water flow along this section can aid in the design of an effective strategy for basin management, including remediation of the Newmark area, which is designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a Superfund cleanup site.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri974179","usgsCitation":"Izbicki, J., Danskin, W.R., and Mendez, G.O., 1998, Chemistry and isotopic composition of ground water along a section near the Newmark area, San Bernardino County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4179, v, 27 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974179.","productDescription":"v, 27 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":2170,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ca.water.usgs.gov/archive/reports/wrir974179/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":124499,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4179/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":56675,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4179/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67bf15","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Izbicki, John A. 0000-0003-0816-4408 jaizbick@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0816-4408","contributorId":1375,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Izbicki","given":"John A.","email":"jaizbick@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":198790,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Danskin, Wesley R. 0000-0001-8672-5501 wdanskin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8672-5501","contributorId":1034,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Danskin","given":"Wesley","email":"wdanskin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":198789,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mendez, Gregory O. 0000-0002-9955-3726 gomendez@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9955-3726","contributorId":1489,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mendez","given":"Gregory","email":"gomendez@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":198791,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
