S. Agency for International Development from 1964 through 1969. Subzone IIB, consisting essentially of the east half of Zone comprises nearly 20,000 km2 principally in the Department of Antioquia but including also small parts of the Departments of Caldas and Tolima. The rocks in IIB range from Precambrian to Holocene. Precambrian feldspar-quartz gneiss occupies a mosaic of fault-bounded blocks intruded by igneous rocks between the Oto fault and the Rio Magdalena. \r\n\r\nPaleozoic rocks are extensive, and include lightly metamorphosed graptolite-bearing Ordovician shale at Cristalina, and a major suite of graphitic quartz-mica schist, feldspathic and aluminous gneiss, quartzite, marble, amphibolite, and other rocks. Syntectonic intrusive gneiss included many of the older rocks during a late Paleozoic(?) orogeny, which was accompanied by Abukuma-type metamorphosing from lowermost greenschist to upper amphibolite facies. A Jurassic diorite pluton bounded by faults cuts volcanic rocks of unknown age east of the Otu fault. Cretaceous rocks are major units. Middle Cretaceous carbonaceous shale, sandstone, graywacke, conglomerate, and volcanic rocks are locally prominent. The Antioquian batholith (quartz diorite) of Late Cretaceous age cuts the middle Cretaceous and older rocks. A belt of Tertiary nonmarine clastic sedimentary rocks crops out along the Magdalena Valley. Patches of Tertiary alluvium are locally preserved in the mountains. Quaternary alluvium, much of it auriferous, is widespread in modern stream valleys. \r\n\r\nStructurally IIB constitutes part of a vast complex synclinorium intruded concordantly by syntectonic catazonal or mesozonal felsic plutons, and by the later epizonal post-tectonic Antioquian batholith. Previously unrecognized major wrench faults are outstanding structural features of IIB. Stress changes and local stress concentrations produced by mining under these conditions often cause sudden and violent ruptures in the coal and surrounding rock mass. The strain energy released by this type of failure, which can produce shock waves and may discharge coal and rock with explosive force, is often a serious threat to life and property. These releases of strain energy are called bumps or bounces by miners if they occur in the coal, and rock bursts if they occur in the surrounding rock mass. Many of these releases are so violent that they generate seismic waves that can be felt, or at least detected by seismic instruments, miles from the site of the rupture, whereas others are smaller and can be detected only by those sensitive seismic instruments within a few thousand feet of the site of the rupture. \r\n\r\nIn 1969 and 1970, about 27,000 and about 15,000 earth tremors, respectively, were recorded by the five-station seismic monitoring network that is located at the surface and encompasses most of the mine workings in the district. Of these totals, 512 and 524 earth tremors, respectively, were of sufficient magnitude (greater than 1. 5 on the Richter scale) so that the hypocenters could be accurately located. In 1968 about 20,000 tremors were recorded, with 281 large enough to plot, but in 1967 over 50,000 were recorded, of which 540 were plotted. \r\n\r\nIn this report we discuss the way in which seismic activity, geology, and mining are related or seem to be related for the period 1967 through 1970, with emphasis on the period 1969-70. We also suggest certain mining procedures which, based on studies during the period, might increase the safety and efficiency of mining operations in the Sunnyside district. A complete tabulation of the larger magnitude earth tremors which occurred during 1969-70 and descriptions of how they relate to mining are given in the appendix. Mean velocity and mean depth data, which are necessary for the computation, have been extracted from discharge measurements made at gaging stations throughout the State. The computed k2 values have been related to channel slopes obtained from topographic maps. Regression equations have been derived that express the relation of k2 to slope for streams at mean flow, median flow, 7-day 2-year low flow, and 7-day 10-year low flow. The equations indicate that an increase in channel slope or a decrease in streamflow increases k2.

The investigation is part of the Commission's feasibility study on storing high-level radioactive waste in chambers mined in basaltic rocks at a. depth of about 3,000 feet or more below the surface. Ground-water flow., on a regional scale, occurs principally in the basalt and-in interbedded sediments of the Columbia River Group, and is controlled by topography, the structure of the basalt, and the large streams--the Columbia, Snake, and Yakima Rivers. The ground water beneath the main part of the Hanford Reservation, south and west of the Columbia River, inures southeastward from recharge areas in the uplands, including Cold Creek and Dry Creek valleys, and ultimately discharges to the Columbia River south of the reservation: East and southeast of the Columbia River, ground water flows generally southwestward and discharges to the River. The Yakima River valley contains a distinct flow system in which movement is toward the Yakima River from the topographic divides. This initial study period has been concerned primarily with establishing a reliable hydrologic data-collection network. However, enough data have been collected to determine that rainfall within the valley shows extreme areal variations from one storm to another. An initial run on the U.S. Geological Survey small watershed model indicates some differences in basin characteristics in the two upper subregions. Results of model studies to date are encouraging. Flood routing with the Corps of Engineers' HEC-1 flood hydrograph package seems to be feasible. By preliminary estimates, the 50-year flood at gage 2282 would probably be between 5,500 and 6,000 cubic feet per second.
The narrow, steep nature of Moanalua Valley results in very rapid concentration of runoff, with extremely sharp hydrograph peaks. Stream channel width ranges from about 20 feet in the headwaters to 35 feet near the downstream limit of the study area. Mean slope of the main stem is about 0.027 foot/foot.1/ Where not identified, units for slope are ft/ft.
Observations indicate that the stream transports very large particles (in excess of 2 feet in diameter) quite frequently. Detached fragments from old stone-arch bridges have been marked in the channel fill for use as tracers.
Only one storm has been analyzed for suspended-sediment discharge, but rough calculations indicate a possible suspended-sediment load of 12,000 tons for a storm similar to the design flow at gage 2282. This compares with a computed bedload discharge of 2,600 tons for the same flow.
Accumulation in the debris basin between October 2, 1969 and July 26, 1971, as measured by level survey, was 48,000 cubic feet or about 2,900 tons.
