The study area is underlain predominantly by sandstone, siltstone, and shale of Tertiary age that decompose readily into moderately deep soils, friable colluvium, and easily transported sediment particles. The Rices Mudstone and Twobar, Shale Members of the San Lorenzo Formation of Brabb (1964) underlie steep dip slopes in the study area, and probably are the most highly erodible of the several geologic units present there. However, nearly all of the geologic units have shown a propensity for accelerated erosion accompanying the disturbance of the land surface by the roadbuilding practices that predominate over other types of sediment-producing land-use activities in the study area. \r\n\r\nSediment transport in the study area was estimated from (1) a reservoir survey of Loch Lomond in 1971 that was compared with a preconstruction survey of 1960, and (2) sampling of sediment transported in suspension by Zayante Creek during the 1970 and 1971 water years. At least 46 acre-feet of sediment accumulated in Loch Lomond in a 10-year period, and an unmeasured quantity of very fine sediment in the form of a thin layer over much of the reservoir bottom was observed. The measured quantity of deposited sediment in a 10-year period represented a sediment yield of about 1,100 tons annually per square mile of drainage basin upstream from the reservoir arms where the major deposition occurred. This sediment occupied less than i percent of the original capacity of Loch Lomond, but the volume of measured sediment deposition is probably conservative in view of the unmeasured deposits observed and a reservoir trap efficiency of about 95 percent. \r\n\r\nSediment sampling on Zayante Creek indicated suspended-sediment yields of about 4,570 and 570 tons per square mile for the 1970 and 1971 water years. S. Bureau of Reclamation Mesa 6-1 drillhole, Imperial County, California","docAbstract":"<p>The Mesa 6-1 drillhole penetrates 8,031 feet of sediments. Cuttings are chiefly siltstones, but with varying amounts of sandstones ranging from very fine sand to very coarse sand size. Color changes in the siltstones constitute the only systematic changes of lithology with depth; these are considered to be the result of variations in oxidation-reduction conditions, not the result of depositional factors. Fragments of igneous and metamorphic rocks occur sporadically in trace amounts. A pebble horizon at least 30 feet thick but of questionable lateral extent is the only distinctive sedimentary horizon.</p><p>Montmorillonite was found in siltstone fragments at and above 1,450 feet, but not in siltstone fragments at or below 1,690 feet. Quartz, calcite, microcline, albite, chlorite, and illite are present in whole-rock diffractograms throughout the hole. Dolomite occurs in most samples to a depth of 4,910 feet, and is present intermittently to a depth of 7,697 feet. Pyrite is present intermittently. No zeolites were found. The model utilizes a mixed-integer mathematical program to identify a minimum present cost set of water resources projects (diversions, reservoirs, ground-water fields, desalinization plants, water treatment plants, and inter-basin transfers of water) which will meet a set of future water demands and to determine their sequence of construction. For a low river-discharge period in August 1970, use of the model yielded an estimated residence time of wedge water to be 6.3 days in the present waterways estuary and 8.6 days in the wider and deeper proposed-waterways estuary--a 37-percent increase. The results of test drilling and an infiltration test indicate that the subsurface material at the spreading grounds is permeable enough to allow recharged water to percolate to the water table. The data indicate that fault K extends into the Waterman Canyon-East Twin Creek area and may impede the lateral movement of recharged water. Fault K has no known surface expression and therefore probably does not affect the highly permeable younger alluvium. If that is so, fault K will be less effective as a barrier to ground-water movement as the recharge mound rises. Granitic plutons are common to all the provinces and the hot springs are spatially associated with the contacts of these plutons. Of 23 hot springs whose bedrock geology is known, all occur within 3 miles of a granitic pluton. The occurrence of hot springs, however, appears to be independent of the age, composition, or magmatic history of the pluton.</p>\n<p>Preliminary chemical and isotopic analyses suggest the hot springs waters belong to two groups. Most of the analyzed hot springs appear to have chemical and Isotopic compositions indicating they were derived from deeply circulating meteoric water. About 25 percent of the analyzed hot springs show a distinct saline character with high concentrations of chloride, sodium, potassium, and calcium indicating either much more complex water rock reactions than occurred in the other hot springs or the addition of another type of water. The present chemical and isotopic data are insufficient to determine the source of the constituents of the saline hot springs.</p>\n<p>Chemical geothermometers suggest subsurface temperatures in the general range of 100&deg;C to 160&deg;C. If the hot spring waters have derived their heat solely from deep circulation, the waters must have reached depths of 9,000 to 15,000 feet, assuming geothermal gradients of 30&deg;C to 50&deg;C/km. If hot magmatic water has been added to the geothermal systems or if dilution or mixing has occurred, temperatures of 100&deg;C to 160&deg;C may be reached at shallower depths.</p>\n<p>The geologic and chemical data are too preliminary to make an estimate of the potential of the hot springs as a geothermal resource.
