Salt structures on the slope south of Louisiana and eastern Texas can be grouped according to structural relief and size which define morphological belts of decreasing deformational maturity in a downslope direction. Off northern Mexico and southernmost Texas, salt structures are anticlinal and their trends suggest a structural relationship with the folds of the Mexican Ridge province to the south. Structural trends in the two slope areas meet in the corner of the northwestern gulf where salt structure may have been influenced by a seaward extension of the San Marcos Arch, or an abrupt change in subsalt structural topography.\r\n\r\nSediment thickness above the top of salt on the slope averages about 1,400 m (4,620 ft) which is a smaller average than expected from previous estimates. In some synclinal basins between salt structures, sediments may be as thick as 4,000-5,000 m (12,000-17,000 ft). On the average, sedimentary deposits in basins on the upper slope are thicker than on the lower slope. From the isopach map of sediments above salt it is estimated that the U.S. continental slope off Texas and Louisiana contains a sedimentary volume of about 170,000 km3 (41,000 mi3). The proper design of bridges, culverts, dams, highways, levees, reservoirs, sewage-disposal systems, waterworks and all structures on the flood plains of streams requires careful consideration of flood hazards. -1- By use of relations presented in this report, the extent, depth, and frequency of flooding can be estimated for any site along the reach of the Schuylkill River from Oaks to Pottstown. These flood data are presented so that regulatory agencies, organizations, and individuals may have a technical basis for making decisions on the use of flood-prone areas. The Delaware River Basin Commission and the U. S. Geological Survey regard this program of flood-plain-inundation studies as a positive step toward flood-damage prevention. Flood-plaininundation studies are a prerequisite to flood-plain management which may include a mixture of flood-control structures and/or land-use regulations. Both physical works and flood-plain regulations are included in the Comprehensive Plan for development of the Delaware River basin, of which the Schuylkill River is a part. Recommendations for land use, or suggestions for limitations of land use, are not made herein. Other reports on use and regulation of land in flood-prone areas are available (Dola, 1961; White, 1961; American Society of Civil Engineers Task Force on Flood Plain Regulations, 1962; and Goddard, 1963). During this period. the stream-runoff pattern of the basin has been altered by constructions of Tuttle Creek and Milford Reservoirs.</p>\n<p>An analysis of data shows that the reduction of suspended sediment discharge has been significant as a result of reservoir storage. The subwatershed receives runoff from approximately 5 percent of the total area of the watershed.</p>\n<p>Most precipitation falling on subwatershed No. 5 does not flow through the reservoir. During this study approximately three-fourths (47,000 acre-feet) of the precipitation was lost by evaporation and transpiration; a small amount is lost by deep subsurface percolation.</p>\n<p>Fifty-nine percent of the total sediment load was discharged from the reservoir during four major outflow periods representing 34 percent of the outflow days. The highest percentage of runoff and sediment yield occurs from March through June. Fifty-three percent of the water discharged and 63 percent of the sediment yield occurred during this 4-month period. The average annual yield of fluvial sediment from watershed No. 5 was 607 tons per square mile, or 0.95 ton per acre.</p>\n<p>A total of 21,370 tons of fluvial sediment was transported into reservoir No. 5 and a total of 19,930 tons was deposited. Seventy-eight percent of the total fluvial sediment was deposited during the first 9.2 years, or 63 percent of time of reservoir operation. The study is an application of surveying, hydrology, and hydraulics to determine flood insurance premium rates. Much of the surveying needed can be done by private firms, either by ground methods or photogrammetry. Contracts are needed to let large surveys but purchase orders can be used for small ones. Photogrammetric stereo models, digital regression models, and step-backwater models are needed for most studies. This report encompasses the results of geologic and geochemical investigations made in a 40 square kilometer area located on the southeast perimeter of the ring structure, an area where previous geochemical exploration revealed anomalous tungsten and molybdenum values. \r\n\r\nIgneous rocks exposed in the area include batholithic plutonic rocks, intrusive rocks of the ring dike, hypabyssal dike rocks, and late epithermal quartz veins; remnants of metamorphosed, prebatholithic rocks are also exposed. About two-thirds of the area is covered with a veneer of surficial debris. Structural patterns of the area are dominated by the ring structure. \r\n\r\nThe principal mineralization consists of powellite and scheelite in high-temperature, quartz-rich veinlets and pods and in contact metamorphic rocks. The strata are considered mainly according to their dimensions, Depth, composition, permeability, structural and seismic history, and to the extent of drilling in the area. Shale, mudstone, and claystone of marine origin in areas of little structural deformation and seismic risks are generally the most promising. These include the Ohio Shale of Devonian age in northern Ohio and the Devonian-Mississippian Ellsworth Shale and Mississippian Coldwater Shale in Michigan.
