The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board, began hydrologic studies in the Austin urban area in 1954. The objectives of this project are as follows:

1. To determine the effects of progressive urbanization on infiltration, rates of peak discharge, and rainfall-runoff relations in the Waller Creek watershed.

2. To provide rainfall-and-runoff data from the rural Wilbarger Creek watershed to be used for comparative purposes in determining the effects of existing and progressive urbanization in the Waller Creek watershed.

3. To provide applied research facilities for studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

The purpose of this report is to present rainfall-and-runoff data for the Waller Creek and Wilbarger Creek study areas for the 1971 water year (October 1, 1970, to September 30, 1971).

To facilitate the publication and distribution of this report at the earliest feasible time, certain material has been included that does not conform to the formal publication standards of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Data concerning suspended sediment concentrations and loads, frequency of occurrence of suspended sediment concentrations, and long-term trends of annual suspended sediment loads are important tools for today's environmental manager. These data are required background for those concerned with establishing and enforcing erosion and sedimentation control regulations and sediment concentration or turbidity standards for water-quality criteria, or those concerned with designing for adequate long-term water storage in reservoirs (sediment load), for efficient municipal and industrial plant operation (sediment concentration frequency), etc.

This is a compilation of the location, period of record, sampling frequency and type of data synthesis for suspended sediment carried by Pennsylvania streams. Figures 1 and 2 show the approximate locations of sediment sampling stations in Pennsylvania. All of the sediment data listed were collected by the U. S. Geological Survey mainly in cooperation with the following Federal, State, and local agencies.

The quality of water, sediment, and biota was determined at four sites in canals and drainage ditches at Miami International Airport (MIA) during high- and low-water periods and during summer and winter 1971–72. Concentrations of common ions, such as calcium, sodium, chloride, and magnesium, tended to be above average for fresh water because of periodic salt-water intrusion. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and pesticides were in higher concentrations than typical for undisturbed areas of south Florida, but not higher than usual for the urban coastal area, so it is not known to what extent these chemicals are attributable to surrounding urbanization. Heavy metals, oil and grease, and PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls) were the best indicators of the effects of MIA on water quality. Concentations of the above were quite variable, high values for each were recorded and were probably associated with recent discharges from industrial sources. Arsenic, lead, iron, and chromium all exceeded, in one or more samples, the U.S. Public Health Service's recommended upper limits for metals in water. Only iron normally exceeds these standards in the natural waters of south Florida. PCB's were detected in most samples and were in concentrations up to 1,000 micrograms per kilogram in fish. In addition to pesticides and PCB's, another group of persistant chlorinated compounds, PCN's (polychlorinated naphthalenes) were detected in water, sediment, and fish. This is the first known detection of these compounds in the environment.

The water supply for the Pueblo Army Depot, 15 miles wast of Pueblo, Colo., is obtained from wells that tap an aquifer in terrace alluvium. Withdrawals have resulted in a water-level decline of 27 feet, which adversely affects the discharge rate of individual wells. Furthermore, excessive pumpage has resulted in progressive deterioration of water quality. Over a 20-year period, hardness has increased from 70 milligrams per liter to 135 milligrams per liter and dissolved-solids content has increased from 250 milligrams per liter to 370 milligrams per liter.

Two new supply wells were drilled in the southern part of the Depot and were tested to determine aquifer properties and probable production rate. The hydraulic conductivity determined from these tests ranged from about 350 to nearly 600 gallons per day per square foot. The transmissivity for the full thickness of the aquifer is in the range of 7,500 to 12,000 gallons per day per foot.<.p>\n

The two new supply wells can be pumped at a combined rate of about 140 gallons per minute. If pumpage in the existing well field is reduced by the same amount, some recovery of water levels in the field will occur and the trend in water quality deterioration may slow or even reverse.

This report is an analysis of the adequacy of the present level of geologic knowledge for making mineral resource potential evaluations of 126 federal land withdrawals made under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The withdrawals considered are Native village and regional deficiency areas (Sec. 11.A.3, ANCSA), classification and national interest study areas for possible inclusion in the four national systems (Sec. 17.d.2) and classification and public interest areas (Sec. 17.d.1). Neither prior withdrawals, utility corridors, state selections, open lands, or Indian Reserves are included. Native village withdrawals are also not included because they were the subject of an earlier report (Cobb, E. H., and Trollman, W. T., 1971).

The present report consists of two sections. The introduction explains the method of preparation and presents a summary table and some general remarks on the mineral potential of Alaska. The second part, the discussion of withdrawals, contains listings of the investigations that have been made and analyses of their adequacy in view of what needs to be known about the withdrawals.

Placer deposits, in addition to their intrinsic value, serve as indicators of areas of potential development of lode deposits. Any possibility that Alaska may again become an important source of metallic mineral commodities depends in part on an inventory of placer deposits and a knowledge of the geology of their source areas.

Information on Alaska's placer deposits is far from complete. Many mining camps have been at best the subject of only cursory examination by geologists or mining engineers at liberty to publish the results of their studies. Many placers are vaguely known from unconfirmed reports that someone was working on a creek, in many instances a creek bearing a name that cannot now be identified with any particular stream. Such data are, of course, practically valueless and were generally ignored in preparing the report. Other major gaps in our knowledge result from the lack of bedrock exposures in many areas where valuable placer deposits were mined, a circumstance that made impossible the determination of lode sources and their mode of occurrence during reconnaissance studies of mining districts. And the reluctance of many prospectors to divulge data on their claims has undoubtedly caused some deposits to be \"lost\" or overlooked.

Apollo 9 photo anomaly near Point of Pines, Arizona","docAbstract":"An infrared photograph of southeastern Arizona, taken during the Apollo 9 multispectral terrain photography experiment in 1969, reveals a ringlike feature, some 3-4 miles (5-6 kin) in diameter, on the Natanes Plateau, 35 miles (56 kin) north of the town of Safford. Because the feature occurs in an area of nearly flat lying Tertiary volcanic rocks, the possibilities of its being a small collapse caldera or an exposed circular intrusive body were considered. Geological and geophysical studies of the area were made to test these hypotheses. \r\n\r\nThe local stratigraphic section consists of approximately 1,500 feet (457 m) of Oligocene and perhaps older volcanic rocks, resting on a moderately irregular basement surface carved from nearly flat lying trending Basin-and-Range faults define a broad horst within which two arcuate cross faults, with 300-600 feet (91-183 m) of displacement, bound a downdropped area. Deep erosion along these faults has created a polygonal network of canyons which constitutes the 'ring' seen on the photograph. A mild arching of the volcanic rocks within the ring is suggested by structure contours on the base of the youngest flows. \r\n\r\nA sharp 350-gamma positive aeromagnetic anomaly is centered within the ring. In its southwest quadrant the anomaly has an elongate extension that trends northwest along an adjoining Basin-and-Range fault. Associated with both is a subtle gravity low. The geophysical data thus suggest the presence of a small blind silicic pluton, possibly of middle Tertiary or younger age. Although it can be argued that the arcuate faults and mild arching of the volcanic pile are related to this postulated pluton, no evidence of hydrothermal alteration or thermal metamorphism of the country rocks was seen. Thus if a pluton is present and of postvolcanic age, it must have been emplaced as a relatively cool dry body; or alternatively, it is older than the surface volcanic rocks. area, Alaska, with emphasis on evaluation of earthquake and other geologic hazards","docAbstract":"The Alaska earthquake of March 27, 1964, brought into sharp focus the need for engineering geologic studies in urban areas. Study of the Haines area constitutes an integral part of an overall program to evaluate earthquake and other geologic hazards in most of the larger Alaska coastal communities. The evaluations of geologic hazards that follow, although based only upon reconnaissance studies and, therefore, subject to revision, will provide broad guidelines useful in city and land-use planning. It is hoped that the knowledge gained will result in new facilities being built in the best possible geologic environments and being designed so as to minimize future loss of life and property damage. \r\n\r\nHaines, which is in the northern part of southeastern Alaska approximately 75 miles northwest of Juneau, had a population, of about 700 people in 1970. It is built at the northern end of the Chilkat Peninsula and lies within the Coast Mountains of the Pacific Mountain system. The climate is predominantly marine and is characterized by mild winters and cool summers. The mapped area described in this report comprises about 17 square miles of land; deep fiords constitute most of the remaining mapped area that is evaluated in this study. \r\n\r\nThe Haines area was covered by glacier ice at least once and probably several times during the Pleistocene Epoch. The presence of emergent marine deposits, several hundred feet above sea level, demonstrates that the land has been uplifted relative to sea level since the last major deglaciation of the region about 10,000 years ago. The rate of relative uplift of the land at Haines during the past 39 years is 2.26 cm per year. Most or all of this uplift appears to be due to rebound as a result of deglaciation. \r\n\r\nBoth bedrock and surficial deposits are present in the area. Metamorphic and igneous rocks constitute the exposed bedrock. The metamorphic rocks consist of metabasalt of Mesozoic age and pyroxenite of probable early middle Cretaceous age. The igneous rocks consist of diorite and quartz diorite (tonalite) of Cretaceous age. Sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age may be present in the mapped area but are not exposed. The surficial deposits of Quaternary age,-have been divided into the following map units on the basis of time Of deposition, mode of origin, and grain size: (1) undifferentiated drift deposits, (2) outwash and Ice-contact deposits; (3) elevated fine-grained marine deposits, (4) elevated shore and delta deposits, (5) alluvial fan deposits, (6) colluvial deposits, (7) modern beach deposits, (8) Chilkat River flood-plain and delta deposits, and (9) manmade fill. Offshore deposits are described but are not mapped.\r\n\r\nSoutheastern Alaska lies within the tectonically active belt that rims the northern Pacific Basin and has been active since at least early Paleozoic time. The outcrop pattern is the result of late Mesozoic and Tertiary deformational, metamorphic, and intrusive events. Large-scale faulting has been common. The two most prominent inferred fault systems in southeastern Alaska and surrounding regions are: (1) The Denali fault system and (2) the Fairweather-Queen Charlotte Islands fault system. In the general area of Haines, rocks of Mesozoic age northeast of Chilkat River have a simple monoclinal structure. Paleozoic-Mesozoic rocks southwest of Chilkat River are gently to rather complexly folded. Several major and numerous minor faults probably transect the general area of Haines but their exact location and character can only be inferred because their traces are coincident to the long axes of fiords and river valleys, where they are concealed by water or by valley-floor deposits.
