One of the uses of the Flint River is dilution of waste-water. Population and industrial growth in the Flint area hah placed new demands on the stream and emphasized the need for an analysis of the surface water resources of the basin. This report describes selected streamflow characteristics of the Flint River and its tributaries, and presents draft-storage relations for the river basin. Flow characteristics for 17 sites show that the 7-day 2-year low flow ranges from 0 to 0.17 cfs (cubic feet per second) per square mile. Draft-storage relations for the basin show that existing storage, if fully utilized, could, on an average, provide a minimum discharge at Montrose of 160 cfs in 19 out of 20 years. The discharge, in conjunction with water diverted from Lake Huron to the Flint River through the Detroit and Flint water systems (about 60 cfs in 1971), indicates that low flows would seldom be less than about 200 cfs at Montrose. Diversions from the basin for irrigation may reduce low flows by about 12 cfs. Ground-water sources offer small potential for development of large supplies of water for streamflow augmentation, although wells in the glacial deposits may provide a supplemental source of water at some locations.

Toward the east the Precambrian rocks are unconformably overlain by Permian and younger sedimentary rocks. \r\n\r\nThe Permian rocks at the west edge of the Ayn Qunay quadrangle consist mainly of a granitic intrusive complex of batholithic dimensions. Parts of the eastern edge of the granitic complex are exposed just west of the overlying Khuff Formation of Permian age, where biotite-hornblende granite of the complex intrudes chlorite-sericite schist of the Precambrian Bi'r Khountina Group. The biotite-hornblende granite of the complex also intrudes plutons of diorite, gabbro, and pyroxenite and is itself intruded by granite porphyry, thereby indicating some difference in age between the granitic rocks in the complex. A sequence of metamorphosed volcanic rocks composed mainly of andesite, rhyolite, and kindred rocks, and called the Halaban Group, is older than the Bi'r Khountina Group. Relations between the Halaban and a gray hornblende-biotite granite gneiss are uncertain, but the gneiss may be older than the Halaban. The few observed contacts disclosed parallel foliation in the two units, but the foliation may have been imposed after the Halaban was deposited on the granite gneiss. \r\n\r\nTwo major left-lateral faults extend west-northwest across the Precambrian rocks but are not in the Permian rocks. These faults parallel to the Najd fault zone found farther south. Seemingly they correlate in time with early movements on the Najd fault zone, but not with the latest. \r\n\r\nSaprolitic material-of variable thickness is present on the upper surface of the Precambrian rocks beneath the Khuff Formation at many places. Where the Khuff Formation has been removed by erosion, the saprolite is also stripped away. The weathering probably took place in pre-Khuff time. \r\n\r\nNo ancient mines or prospects were seen in the Precambrian rocks; however, a notable positive anomaly for tungsten in concentrates is associated with a small prominence of granite porphyry 35 km southwest of Ayn Qunay. Ground water from approximately 230 large-capacity wells is used to irrigate most of the 18,165 acres under irrigation. \r\n\r\nThe purpose of this study is to provide more knowledge about the character of the aquifers, quantity of water in storage, rate of withdrawal, and the effect of withdrawals on streamflow. The area studied consists of about 400 square miles in southeastern Laramie County in the extreme southeast corner of Wyoming. \r\n\r\nThe White River Formation of Oligocene age and alluvium of Quaternary age are the principal aquifers. The White River Formation is made up primarily of clay, silt, and fine sand. Secondary permeability in the White River Formation accounts for it being an important aquifer. The alluvium, which Includes terrace and flood-plain deposits, consists of sand and gravel that contain some lenses of silt and clay.\r\n\r\nExistence of secondary permeability in the White River Formation has been accepted for some time although the nature of the secondary permeability has been disputed. Examination of downhole conditions with a television camera during this study revealed openings in the formation that appeared to be similar to tubes or caverns. The openings were of various sizes and shapes but only a few appeared to be associated with fracturing. Solution activity in the formation probably is an important factor in the development of secondary permeability. \r\n\r\nThe study area was divided into the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area and the Carpenter area. Ground-water movement in the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area is generally eastward into Nebraska; in the Carpenter area, movement is generally southward into Colorado. \r\n\r\nPumpage from large-capacity wells in the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area was estimated to be about 21,790 acre-feet in 1971. Water levels exhibited a declining trend annually in some areas during the period of record. Data indicate that pumpage in the Pine Bluffs-Egbert area probably is the cause of decreased base flow in Lodgepole Creek since approximately 1961. Increased pumpage, above that in 1971, will result in further reduction of discharge of Lodgepole Creek into Nebraska. \r\n\r\nIn the Carpenter area, it was estimated that the terrace deposit contained about 1 million acre-feet of saturated sediments in March 1971. The amount of ground water in storage in the White River Formation in this area is unknown.\r\n\r\nPumpage from large-capacity wells in the Carpenter area was estimated to be about 7,090 acre-feet in 1971. \nUnder existing conditions of sediment transport, the average annual suspended-sediment discharges at three streamflow-measuring sites are calculated to be 134,000 tons for the Similkameen River near Nighthawk, 175,000 tons for the Okanogan River near Tonasket, and 175,000 tons for the Okanogan River at Malott.
\nThe volume of sediment in Enloe Reservoir was computed to be 1.79 million cubic yards (about 2.4 million tons). The sediment is largely sand. If the dam were removed the maximum amount of reservoir sand transportable (in addition to normal sediment discharge), under stated conditions of velocity and depth during any average 10-year period, would range from about 17,000 to 580,000 cubic yards per year, with about 320,000 cubic yards being transported during a year of average water discharge. These volumes represent a range of 32 to less than 1 percent of the volume of sediment now deposited in the reservoir.
\nThe reservoir deposits not carried to the mouth of the Okanogan River (at Columbia River) would be deposited largely in a 17-mile reach of the Okanogon River immediately downstream from its confluence with the Similkameen River. Deposition of the reservoir sediment would tend to reduce the capacity of the channel of the Okanogan River in this reach; also there possibly would be some long-tern adjustments of the stream course to the temporary increase in the sediment load. Locally, the reduction in the channel cross section probably would increase the depth of the water and area of inundation during floods. Deposition of sediment in the Okanogan River channel and accompanying undesirable effects would be less severe if the dam were removed in segments over a period of several years.
\nIf the dam is removed in segments the amount of sediment transported by the river could be monitored to evaluate (1) the timing of the removal of the remaining segments of the dam, based on actual sediment-transport data, (2) the amount of sediment rremaining in the reservoit, and (3) the impact of sediment deposition on channel configuration and flooding.

The well provides information on aquifer characteristics in this area which are not available from existing deep irrigation wells. The well was drilled by air-rotary methods and penetrates eight aquifer zones (A through H); the upper 75 feet of the well is cased, and the remainder of the hole is open in basalt.
Test pumping during drilling showed that the well had specific capacities of (1) 4-8 gpm (gallons per minute) per foot of drawdown when at the 255-foot depth and open to aquifers A through D, (2) 5.6 gpm per foot of drawdown when at the 640-foot depth and open to aquifers A through G, and (3) 76 5 gpm per foot of drawdown when at the full 750-foot depth and open to all eight aquifers. The tests indicate that most of the water available to the well is from the deepest aquifer (zone H).
Borehole geophysical logging supplemented the drillers log of the well and provided information on natural gamma radiation, water temperature and resistivity, and borehole diameter. In the completed well each aquifer zone is isolated by cement seals, and piezometer pipes installed to zones B through H allow a basis for defining the vertical hydraulic gradient and ground-water movement in the area. The pipes also permit chemical quality monitoring of water in the various aquifer zones. An additional pipe, installed for providing thermistor access, allows recording of the geothermal gradient in the well which provides a basis for estimating vertical ground-water movement in the area.

Recharge into the area is almost exclusively from precipitation in the San Bernardino and Little San Bernardino Mountains. About 500 acre-feet per year of recharge enters the western part of the area as underflow through Pipes Wash. Little direct recharge occurs as a result of precipitation directly on the unconsolidated deposits. \r\n\r\nPresently about 11,000 persons reside in the area and current gross pumpage is about 1,600 acre-feet annually. By the year 2000 the population is estimated to be 62,000 and annual gross pumpage is expected to be nearly 11,000 acre-feet. Although over 1,200,000 acre-feet of ground water are presently in storage, most of the population is centered in the southern part of the area around the towns of Yucca Valley and Joshua Tree. About 70 percent of the population resides in the vicinity of Yucca Valley and is supplied by ground water pumped from the Warren Valley basin. Of the 96,000 acre-feet of ground water in storage in that basin in 1969, about 80,000 acre-feet will be necessary to sustain projected growth there until 2000. Assuming negligible recharge and only about 50 percent recovery of the ground water in storage, if imported water from northern California is not available before about 1990, additional local supplies will have to be developed, possibly in the adjacent Pipes subbasin to the north. \r\n\r\nGround water in the southern part of the study area generally contains less than 250 mg/l (milligrams per liter) dissolved solids and 1.0 mg/l fluoride. A general degradation of ground-water quality occurs northward toward the dry lakes where the concentrations of dissolved solids and fluoride approach 2,000 and 5.0 mg/l, respectively. In Reche subbasin some isolated occurrences of fluoride exceeding 1.5 mg/l were noted. Mex. ; (2) determine whether mining of the peat will affect the stability of three manmade features near the deposits; (3) determine whether peat mining will affect springs. \r\n\r\nPeat deposits with organic-matter contents between 15 and 35 percent are generally 1- to 2-feet thick and occur within 8 feet of land surface. The deposits underlie an area of about 26 acres.
