Northward-trending belts of granitic rocks and folded, layered metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Halaban Formation which they intrude represent the effects of the Halaban cycle. These older rocks are everywhere transected and deformed by northwestward- and northeastward-striking fractures and strike-slip faults and by eastward-striking fractures and fracture-controlled silicic dikes which belong to the Najd Wrench Fault deformation. \r\n\r\nSeveral kinds of epigenetic mineral deposits of hydrothermal origin are present throughout the Ash Shumta area. All occur in or ape closely associated with structures of the Najd Wrench Fault deformation. The mineralization which produced the deposits is thought to have taken place during the period of deformation which produced the Najd Wrench Fault structures. The hydrothermal deposits include many metalliferous quartz veins most of which occur in three mineralized areas: two major areas at Jabal Ash Shumta and Jabal El Khom in the northern half of the quadrangle and a minor area along Wadj al Boharah in the southeastern part of the quadrangle. \r\n\r\nThe metalliferous lodes possess the only economic potential in the area of the Jabal Ash Shumta quadrangle. These lodes consist mainly of gold and base metal-bearing quartz veins, some of which were mined for gold in ancient times. The mineralized area at Jabal Ash Shumta has the best of these veins. Higher temperature veins with wolframite as a major constituent and beryl as a minor one occur in a granite cupola in the eastern part of the El Khom area. These veins have altered, gneissen-like wall rocks. Although the grade of the veins is low at the surface, the made could increase at depth. The tungsten-bearing veins and El Khom area possess the greatest economic promise in the Jabal Ash Shumta quadrangle. The older Precambrian Halaban cycle produced the thick eugeosynclinal suite of interlayered metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks comprising the Halaban Formation, the numerous synorogenic granitic masses which intrude the layered rocks, and the northward-trending tectonic, plutonic, and metamorphic features of all these rocks which constitute the basic grain of the area. The older Halaban features are everywhere strongly transected, but only slightly deformed and offset, by many eastward-northeastward-, and northwestward-striking fractures and strike-slip faults. Silicic dikes are emplaced in these fractures, and several kinds of barren and metalliferous veins are closely associated with them. All these features are here thought to have formed during a period of deformation of late Precambrian age which produced the Najd Wrench Fault Zone; therefore, these features are named for it. Sporadic remnants of once far more extensive basaltic lava fields and the north-northwestward-striking vertical fractures which occur in them and contain volcanic vents from which they were extruded are the youngest rocks and structures in the Wadi an Nuqumi area. They are thought to have formed during the period of tectonic and volcanic activity which also produced the Red Sea graben. \r\n\r\nThe principal mineral deposits of the Wadi an Nuqumi area are silicified-carbonate breccia veins which occur in structures of the Najd Wrench Fault deformation and metalliferous quartz veins which are closely associated with them. Erratics of the Belchertown Tonalite, derived from the northeast portion of the Easthampton quadrangle, have been carried southward a distance of at least 16 miles. The presence of tonalite boulders on the summit of Mount Tom, elevation 1,205 feet, testifies to uplift of erratics through a vertical distance of 1,000 feet. \r\n\r\nThree tills are recognized on the basis of color, grainsize parameters, and location: (1) a reddish-brown sandy till occurs west of the Holyoke Basalt ridge, (2) a brown silty till lies east of the basalt ridge, and (3) a grayish-brown till-with intermediate grain size occurs in the Easthampton quadrangle and the north-central portion of the Mount Tom quadrangle. The three tills are the same age and are equivalent to the upper till of southern New England. During deglaciation, readvance occurred from the northeast over a minimum distance of 3.5 miles in the southeast portion of the quadrangle. Evidence for readvance consists of (1) till over stratified drift, (2) southwest-oriented till fabrics on south-trending drumlins, (3) west-southwest-trending striations cutting south-trending striations, (4) southwest-oriented glaciotectonic structures, and (5) data from borings. \r\n\r\nWest of the basalt ridge, northward retreat of an active ice margin was punctuated by four stillstands, during which outwash deltas were deposited in proglacial lakes. From oldest to youngest the deposits associated with the four stillstands are named: (1) Paper Mills delta, (2) Barnes delta, (3) Pomeroy Street delta, and (4) White Brook delta. East of the basalt ridge a series of small ice-contact deltas were deposited in high proglacial Lake Hitchcock, which expanded northward with the retreating ice margin. Deposition culminated along the upper east margin of the quadrangle with the formation of a large ice-contact delta named the Holyoke delta. \r\n\r\nContinued northward retreat of the ice margin both east and west of the basalt ridge permitted water of Lake Hitchcock to extend through the Holyoke Narrows and into the valleys of the Manhan River and Broad Brook in the north-central portion of the Mount Tom quadrangle. The object of the examinations was to learn the, nature, geologic setting, and approximate size of each deposit, to review prior estimates of size, and possibly recommend additional exploratory work.. The full extent of each deposit is poorly known at the present time, so recommended additional work entails drilling, digging trenches or pits, geologic mapping or, combinations of these activities. \r\n\r\nOn Qaldagi Mountain an area of about 1 sq km is capped by bredciated chert under which may be a continuous zone of mixed iron oxides and chert fragments. The thickness of the ferruginous zone is poorly known but is as much as 12 meters, in at least one place. The- ferruginous material and chert appear to have formed by the weathering of serpentine, bun this concept needs further testing. Drilling is recommended to determine the grade, thickness, and extent-of the ferruginous zone beneath the cherty cap. Inasmuch as mining by hand sorting is in progress, part of the deposit can be considered to be marginally in the category of iron reserves. \r\n\r\nThe Keceborlu iron deposit consists of earthy to slightly compacted hematite and limonite mixed with small chert fragments. The surface area underlain by ferruginous rock is about 5,000 to 7,500 sq meters. The maximum known thickness of the deposit is about 7 meters. Iron appears to have been concentrated by weathering and oxidation of cherty limestone. The deposit is probably either a remnant of a once more extensive weathered cap, or a sink hole filling. The Keceborlu area warrants a low priority for further exploration, but one drill hole is recommended to test the thickness of the deposit. \r\n\r\nThe iron deposits at Mellec are layered and vein-magnetite replacements of limestone. The six known deposits are discontinuous. No additional. work is recommended. ' \r\n\r\nThe Gilindire Iron deposit consists of irregular concentrations of pisolitic and earthy hematite and 'limonite along an unconformity or disconformity between two groups of limestone. The ferruginous zone is incompletely known around the rim of the large Gilindire syncline. Data from trenches 5 to 6 km around the syncline--about ? the possible length of the ferruginous zone--provide the main knowledge about the size and grade of ferruginous lenses. The ferruginous lenses range in thickness from a fraction of a meter, to about 3 meters, but appear to average 1 meter or less, and range in grade from about 10 to 37 percent iron. No additional exploration work is recommended at Gilindire. \r\n\r\nThe Buyukeceli deposit consists of veinlike masses of earthy and compact hematite and limonite cutting fresh limestone. The veins apparently originally contained siderite which has been weathered and converted to iron oxide. Further exploration by drilling is recommended at such time as other largest deposits are able to be brought into the development stage in the Mediterranean coastal area of Turkey. \r\n\r\nThe iron deposits overlooking Bayas on the Gulf of Iskenderun ere in one or more layers along the west-facing front of the Amanus Mountain Range, between beds of gently to moderately east-dipping limestone. \r\n\r\nIsolated exposures may represent a once-continuous ferruginous bed that has been blockfaulted and intruded by serpentine. The ferruginous bed (or beds) is 20-30 meters thick, and consists of a mixture of very fine grained hematite and claylike material. Iron content ranges from 20 to 40 percent and aluminum, averages about 15 percent. Available data on distribution are scant but suggest that one ferruginous bed may be 1-2 kilometers long, 500 meters wide and 20 meters thick.
