In the NAWQA Program, integrated physical, chemical, and biological assessments are used to describe water-quality conditions. The instream and riparian habitat data are collected at sites selected for surface-water chemistry analyses and biological assessment.\r\n\r\nInstream and riparian habitat data are structured in a nested scheme?at sampling reach, segment, and basin scales. The habitat data were collected in the Ozark Plateaus study unit at 41 sites during 1993-95. Thirteen of these sites, representative of selected combinations of physiography, land use, and basin size, have longitudinal, transverse, and quarter point vegetation plot surveys in addition to the Level I survey measurements (reach length, depth, velocity, dominant substrate, embeddedness, and vegetation quarter points, for example) recommended by the NAWQA Program protocols. These habitat data were from onsite measurements, U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps, and a geographic information system.\r\n\r\nThe analyses of the habitat data indicates substantial differences between sites of differing physiography and basin-scale land-use activities. The basins range from 46.4 to 4,318 square kilometers and have stream orders from 2 to 6. All streams studied are a riffle/pool type, and most have cobble that is less than 50 percent embedded as the dominant streambed substrate.\r\n\r\nOf the three physiographic sections studied, the Boston Mountains have the largest mean segment and sideslope gradients, basin relief, woody species diversity, and stream depths when compared with sites of similar size. Channel sinuosities, mean velocities, and canopy angles are largest at sites in the Springfield Plateau physiographic section. The sites in the Salem Plateau physiographic section have the largest woody vegetation densities and mean channel widths.\r\n\r\nSites in basins with predominantly agricultural land use tend to have more open canopies, steeper segment gradients, and more sinuous stream channels than the forested sites. Sites in predominantly forested basins tend to have deeper and swifter flow, smaller channel widths, and more dense woody riparian vegetation (at small basins) than the agricultural sites.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr97236","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Femmer, S.R., 1997, Water-quality assessment of the Ozark Plateaus study unit, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma- habitat data and characteristics at selected sites, 1993-95: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-236, vi, 44 p. : ill., maps ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97236.","productDescription":"vi, 44 p. : ill., maps ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1456,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr97-236/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":155297,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cde4b07f02db544a8f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Femmer, Suzanne R. sfemmer@usgs.gov","contributorId":2668,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Femmer","given":"Suzanne","email":"sfemmer@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":396,"text":"Missouri Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":189290,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The site is located along a channelized reach of Big Creek Drainage Canal, east of State Route 240, and near the southern boundary of Naval Support Activity Memphis. Rainfall amounts and water levels for the site were recorded from October 1, 1995 to September 30, 1996. Total rainfall for this period was 47.58 inches. In general, water levels at the wetland were above or near the ground surface during the 6-month period from the first of January through the end of June 1996. For the remainder of the year, water levels generally subsided to several feet below land surface. However, some locations within the wetland were wet or highly saturated year round.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr97221","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Knight, R., 1997, Rainfall and water-level data for a wetland area near Millington, Shelby County, Tennessee, October 1995 through September 1996: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-221, iii, 26 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97221.","productDescription":"iii, 26 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154848,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":1646,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr97-221","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a5fe4b07f02db63480f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Knight, R.R.","contributorId":59063,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Knight","given":"R.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":190383,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During 1967-93, a total of 205 samples were collected from 61 wells and 18 surface-water locations, and the samples were analyzed for various water-quality constituents. Overall, the quality of ground water in the Warwick aquifer is within the selected drinking water guidelines for North Dakota, and the quality of water from wells less than or equal to 25 feet deep and wells greater than 25 feet deep is similar. Only a few water-quality constituents had concentrations that exceeded the selected drinking water guidelines for North Dakota. Arsenic concentrations neared or exceeded North Dakota drinking water standards in samples collected from two wells greater than 133 feet deep located within the production well field area. Thus, arsenic may be a concern in deeper portions of the aquifer. The quality of the surface water in the Warwick aquifer area was similar to the quality of the ground water in the aquifer. However, specific conductance, pH values, and concentrations of common agricultural pesticides generally are greater in the surface water than in the ground water.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr97201","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Vining, K., 1997, Water-quality assessments of ground water and surface water in the Warwick aquifer area, Fort Totten Indian Reservation, North Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-201, iii, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97201.","productDescription":"iii, 18 p.","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":156149,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0201/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":53786,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0201/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602c0f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vining, K.C.","contributorId":63424,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vining","given":"K.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":192515,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In addition to data collected from existing wells and test holes, 17 monitoring sites were constructed in Irwin Basin to provide data on subsurface geology, ground-water levels, and ground-water quality. Eleven of these sites were multiple-well monitoring sites that were constructed to provide depth-dependent geohydrologic data in the aquifer system. The aquifer system of Irwin Basin, defined on the basis of hydrologic data collected from wells in Irwin Basin, consists of an upper and a lower aquifer. A 1994 water-table contour map shows that a cone of depression beneath Irwin Basin well field has developed as a result of ground-water development. Water-quality samples collected from Irwin Basin wells to determine potential sources of ground-water degradation indicate that water in three areas in the basin contains high nitrate and dissolved-solids concentrations. The stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen indicate that present-day precipitation is not a major source of recharge in this basin. Tritium and carbon-14 data indicate that most of the basin was recharged before 1953 and that this water may be more than 14,000 years old.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri974092","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Fort Irwin National Training Center","usgsCitation":"Densmore, J., and Londquist, C.J., 1997, Ground-water hydrology and water quality of Irwin Basin at Fort Irwin National Training Center, California: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4092, vi, 159 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974092.","productDescription":"vi, 159 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":118699,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4092/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":55685,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4092/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Calfornia","otherGeospatial":"Fort Irwin National Training Center","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.71666667,\n              35.21666667\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.65000000,\n              35.21666667\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.65000000,\n              35.28333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.71666667,\n              35.28333333\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.71666667,\n              35.21666667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b01e4b07f02db698728","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Densmore, Jill N. 0000-0002-5345-6613","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5345-6613","contributorId":89179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Densmore","given":"Jill N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197016,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Londquist, Clark J.","contributorId":44149,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Londquist","given":"Clark","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197015,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The purpose of the wells is to allow monitoring and sampling of shallow, intermediate, and deep waterbearing zones for the purpose of determining the horizontal and vertical distribution of any contaminated ground water migrating from the Keystone Site. Twelve monitoring wells, ranging in depth from 50 to 397.9 feet below land surface, were drilled in the vicinity of the Keystone Site. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted borehole-geophysical logging and determined, with geophysical logs and other available data, the ideal intervals to be screened in each well. Geophysical logs were run on four intermediate and four deep wells, and a caliper log only was run on shallow well CL-AD-173 (HN-1S). Data were compiled for the floods of (1) March 17-19, 1936; (2) June 22-24, 1972; (3) November 4-7, 1985; (4) January 19-21, 1996; (5) September 6-8, 1996; and (6) the peak of record for 6 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamflow-gaging stations on the Potomac River and 10 streamflow-gaging stations on selected tributaries to the Potomac River.  Peak discharge, peak gage height, the date and time of the peak, and approximate recurrence interval are presented for each flood event at these streamflow-gaging stations.Data compiled from selected high-flow discharge measurements on the six Potomac River streamflow- gaging stations are presented.  The gage height, top width, cross-sectional area, mean velocity, maximum velocity, and discharge are presented for each selected discharge measurement.  Any corresponding discharge on the C & O Canal that was measured or estimated for these dischrge measurements is presented.  Ranges of Manning's roughness coefficient were computed for the range of selected discharge measurements, based on estimates of water-surface slope or the channel-bed slope.  These data will be used for subsequent hydraulic studies by engineers for maintenance, protection, or restoration of the C & O Canal.  An inventory of selected references, flood studies, and additional USGS data along the Potomac River and the C & O Canal NHP also are presented.  Included are (1) a listing of selected flood studies and reports, and (2) a listing of USGS indirect flood-discharge measurements that have been made at the six Potomac River streamflow-gaging stations in the vicinity of the C & O Canal NHP.  Information on historical streamflow-gaging station records and discharge measurements on the C & O Canal also is presented.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services,","doi":"10.3133/ofr97200","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Doheny, E.J., 1997, Flood-hydrology data for the Potomac River and selected tributaries in the vicinity of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Maryland, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-200, iv, 33 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97200.","productDescription":"iv, 33 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1360,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://md.water.usgs.gov/publications/ofr-97-200/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":154492,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0200/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52305,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0200/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49abe4b07f02db5c5bbd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doheny, Edward J. 0000-0002-6043-3241 ejdoheny@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6043-3241","contributorId":4495,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doheny","given":"Edward","email":"ejdoheny@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":374,"text":"Maryland Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":189094,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The project was a pilot study to evaluate the use of the technologies for bathymetric surveys. Bathymetric surveys were last conducted in 1978 on Morse Reservoir and in 1980 on Geist Reservoir; those surveys were done with conventional methods using networks of fathometer transects. The 1996 bathymetric surveys produced updated estimates of reservoir volumes that will serve as base-line data for future estimates of storage capacity and sedimentation rates.An acoustic Doppler current profiler and global positioning system receiver were used to collect water-depth and position data from April 1996 through October 1996. All water-depth and position data were imported to a geographic information system to create a data base. The geographic information system then was used to generate water-depth contour maps and to compute the volumes for each reservoir.The computed volume of Morse Reservoir was 22,820 acre-feet (7.44 billion gallons), with a surface area of 1,484 acres. The computed volume of Geist Reservoir was 19,280 acre-feet (6.29 billion gallons), with a surface area of 1,848 acres. The computed 1996 reservoir volumes are less than the design volumes and indicate that sedimentation has occurred in both reservoirs. Cross sections were constructed from the computer-generated surfaces for 1996 and compared to the fathometer profiles from the 1978 and 1980 surveys; analysis of these cross sections also indicates that some sedimentation has occurred in both reservoirs.The acoustic Doppler current profiler, global positioning system, and geographic information system technologies described in this report produced bathymetric maps and volume estimates more efficiently and with comparable or greater resolution than conventional bathymetry methods.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nBranch of Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri974099","usgsCitation":"Wilson, J., Morlock, S.E., and Baker, N., 1997, Bathymetric surveys of Morse and Geist Reservoirs in central Indiana made with acoustic Doppler current profiler and global positioning system technology, 1996: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4099, v, 49 p. On the basis of the flood-frequency analysis computed from data through the 1993 water year, a flood that was greater than or equal to a 10-year recurrence interval discharge occurred during 1993 at all 62 gaging stations, and a flood greater than or equal to a 100-year recurrence-interval discharge occurred at 11 of the gaging stations.

Results of the comparison indicated that inclusion of the 1993 flood in the data base resulted in an increase in the magnitude of dis charges for all selected recurrence intervals at the 62 streamflow-gaging stations in Iowa. A larger percentage increase in the magnitude of discharge was computed for the larger recurrence intervals than for the smaller recurrence intervals for most of the selected gaging stations . As a result of including the 1993 peak discharge in the flood-frequency analysis, three gaging stations had an increase in the 100-year recurrence-interval discharge that was greater than 30 percent.

Several factors, which included recurrence intervals for the 1993 peak discharges and the effective record lengths for 1993, were investigated for the 62 selected streamflow-gaging stations to evaluate their possible effect on the computed flood-frequency discharges. The combined effect of these two factors on the computed 100-year recurrence-interval discharges was significant. Gaging stations were grouped into four discrete categories on the basis of recurrence intervals for the 1993 peak discharges and the effective record lengths for 1993 . Of the 28 gaging stations that had small flood magnitudes in 1993 and long record lengths, the difference between the 1992 and the 1993 flood-frequency analyses for 100- year recurrence-interval discharges at 22 gaging stations was less than 5 percent. Of the 10 gaging stations that had large flood magnitudes in 1993 and short record lengths, the increase in 100-year recurrence-interval discharges at 9 gaging stations was greater than 15 Standard errors for load estimates were computed from available phosphorus concentration and daily discharge data. Components of error were associated with uncertainty in concentration and discharge data and were calculated for existing conditions and for 6 alternative load-monitoring scenarios for each of 48 distinct inflows. Benefit-cost ratios were computed for each alternative monitoring scenario at each site by dividing estimated reductions in load uncertainty by the 5-year average costs of each scenario in 1992 dollars. Absolute and marginal benefit-cost ratios were compared in an iterative optimization scheme to determine the most cost-effective combination of discharge and concentration monitoring scenarios for the lake. If the current (1992) discharge-monitoring network around the lake is maintained, the water-quality sampling at each inflow site twice each year is continued, and the nature of loading remains the same, the standard error of computed mean-annual load is estimated at about 98 metric tons per year compared to an absolute loading rate (inflows and outflows) of 530 metric tons per year. This produces a relative uncertainty of nearly 20 percent. The standard error in load can be reduced to about 20 metric tons per year (4 percent) by adopting an optimized set of monitoring alternatives at a cost of an additional $200,000 per year. The final optimized network prescribes changes to improve both concentration and discharge monitoring. These changes include the addition of intensive sampling with automatic samplers at 11 sites, the initiation of event-based sampling by observers at another 5 sites, the continuation of periodic sampling 12 times per year at 1 site, the installation of acoustic velocity meters to improve discharge gaging at 9 sites, and the improvement of a discharge rating at 1 site. During 1994, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment proposed to the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission (CWQCC) an aquatic-life standard of 225 µg/L (micrograms per liter) for the dissolved-zinc concentration in the Animas River downstream from Silverton (fig.1). The CWQCC delayed implementation of this water-quality standard until further information was collected and a plan for the cleanup of abandoned mines was developed. Dissolved-zinc concentrations in this section of the river ranged from about 270 µg/L during high flow, when rainfall and snowmelt runoff dilute the dissolved minerals in the river (U.S. Geological Survey, 1996, p. 431), to 960 µg/L (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, written commun., 1996) during low flow (such as late summer and middle winter when natural springs and drainage from mines are the main sources for the streams).
\n
\n
Mining sites in the basin were developed between about 1872 and the 1940's, with only a few mines operated until the early 1990's. Although rainfall and snowmelt runoff from mine-waste piles might affect water quality in streams, work described in this fact sheet was done during low-flow conditions when springs and drainage from mine were the main sources of dissolved minerals affecting the streams. Data are being collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to determine the magnitude and sources of dissolved minerals during rainfall- and snowmelt-runoff periods.
\n
\n
This fact sheet presents results of studies done by the USGS in collaboration with the Animas River Stakeholders Group and was prepared in cooperation with the Southwestern Colorado Water Conservation District. The full-scale NAWQA Program, initiated in 1991, includes both study-unit and national synthesis activities. Study-unit investigations provide scientific data and interpretations that will be integrated by national synthesis studies to assess the quality of the Nation's water resources. The Nevada Basin and Range (NVBR) study unit is one of 60 proposed NAWQA study units in the United States. These riverbasin-scale areas were selected to represent large proportions of the Nation's water use and population served by public supplies, and the Nation's geographic diversity.

The NVBR study unit includes the Las Vegas Valley area, approximately 1,640 mi in southern Nevada, and the Carson River Basin (3,970 mi2) and Truckee River Basin (3,230 mi2) in northwestern Nevada and northeastern California. The areas are typical of Basin and Range physiography. Snowfall in high mountains provides streamflow and ground-water recharge in adjacent basins. Unconsolidated basin-fill deposits commonly exceed 1,000 ft in thickness and are principal aquifers in the study unit. The study-unit climate varies from humid continental in the Sierra Nevada where the Carson and Truckee Rivers originate (annual precipitation exceeds 30 in.) to desert in terminal parts of the basins, including the Carson Desert and lower altitudes in Las Vegas Valley, where annual precipitation is less than 5 in.

In 1990, Nevada had the greatest population growth rate and the fourth greatest percentage of population residing in urban areas in the Nation. More than 90 percent of Nevada's population (about 1,090,000 in 1990) resided in the study unit; the Las Vegas Valley area (about 710,000) was the most populous area. In 1990, water use in the study unit was about 1,117,000 acre-ft. Water use in the Las Vegas Valley area was about 317,000 acre-ft; 91 percent was for public supplies. Las Vegas Valley was 79 percent range land, but the 5 percent urban land use has significantly affected water resources. Water use in the Carson River Basin was 538,000 acre-ft in 1990. About 95 percent of the water was used for irrigation, although only 5 percent of the land was used for irrigated agriculture. Water use in the Truckee River Basin was 262,000 acre-ft in 1990. Public supply used about 36 percent of the water, although only 3 percent of the land was urban.

Nutrients, pesticides, and suspended sediments are important water-quality issues in the study unit. Urban runoff and treated sewage effluent contribute these constituents to Las Vegas Wash and the Truckee River. Urban and agricultural activities in the Carson and Truckee River Basins are also sources of these constituents.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri974106","collaboration":"A product of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program -- Nevada Basin and Range","usgsCitation":"Kilroy, K.C., Lawrence, S.J., Lico, M.S., Bevans, H.E., and Watkins, S.A., 1997, Water-quality assessment of the Las Vegas Valley area and the Carson and Truckee River basins, Nevada and California: Nutrients, pesticides, and suspended sediment, October 1969-April 1990: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 97-4106, Report: xi, 144 p.; 2 Plates: 21.00 x 24.30 inches and 37.00 x 47.70 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wri974106.","productDescription":"Report: xi, 144 p.; 2 Plates: 21.00 x 24.30 inches and 37.00 x 47.70 inches","costCenters":[{"id":316,"text":"Georgia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":158521,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4106/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":54581,"rank":5,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4106/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":365698,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4106/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":365699,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1997/4106/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":410069,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48728.htm","text":"Carson and Truckee River Basins]","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":465896,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_48729.htm","text":"Las Vegas Valley area","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"California, Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Carson River Basin, Truckee River Basin, Las Vegas Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.75,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.5,\n              35.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.5,\n              36.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.75,\n              36.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.75,\n              35.5\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.5,\n              38.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -118,\n              38.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -118,\n              40.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.5,\n              40.5\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.5,\n              38.25\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e5e4b07f02db5e6e61","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kilroy, Kathryn C.","contributorId":102871,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kilroy","given":"Kathryn","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195264,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Lawrence, Stephen J. slawrenc@usgs.gov","contributorId":1885,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lawrence","given":"Stephen","email":"slawrenc@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":316,"text":"Georgia Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":195265,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lico, Michael S.","contributorId":75897,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lico","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195263,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Bevans, Hugh E.","contributorId":11589,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bevans","given":"Hugh","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195267,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Watkins, Sharon A.","contributorId":93880,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Watkins","given":"Sharon","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":195266,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The Iroquois River delivered almost twice as much suspended-sediment load to the Kankakee River main stem as did the Kankakee River above its junction with the Iroquois River. For the Iroquois River, the portion of the drainage area in Illinois contributed 86 percent of the total suspended-sediment load measured during the study. In contrast, for the Kankakee River upstream from the junction with the Iroquois, the portion of the drainage area in Illinois contributed only 17 percent of the total suspended-sediment load measured during the study. A net increase in total suspended-sediment load of 659,000 tons was measured in the main stem Kankakee River from the mouth of the Iroquois River to the streamflow-gaging station at Wilmington, Ill. This portion of the Kankakee River drainage had the highest suspended-sediment yield at 861 tons per day per square mile.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Urbana, Illinois","doi":"10.3133/ofr97120","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"The USGS does not support this software or technical questions for the software associated with the publication. Ancillary data for parameters, such as water temperature, streamflow, specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, and alkalinity, also are compiled, if available. Data were retrieved from the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency STORET (STOrage and RETrieval) system. The water-quality data are presented for sites having five or more nutrient analyses that reflect ambient stream conditions. The compiled data base contains 4,927 samples from 123 sites. The median sample period of record for individual sites is 2.5 years, and the seventy-fifth percentile is about 12 years. Sixteen sites have only five samples each. The median number of samples per site is 14 samples, whereas the seventy-fifth percentile is 65 samples. The compiled data set was used in the design of a basinwide sampling network that incorporates sites that lack historic surface-water-quality data.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;Information Services [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr97233","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"The USGS does not support this software or technical questions for the software associated with the publication.","usgsCitation":"Wynn, K.H., and Spahr, N., 1997, Nitrogen and phosphorus data for surface water in the Upper Colorado River basin, Colorado, 1980-94: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 97-233, v, 14 p. :ill., map ;28 cm. +1 computer disk (3 1/2 in.), https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr97233.","productDescription":"v, 14 p. :ill., map ;28 cm. +1 computer disk (3 1/2 in.)","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1896,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.water.usgs.gov/ofr97233","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":157815,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":270249,"type":{"id":4,"text":"Application Site"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1997/0233/application.zip"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48ade4b07f02db52d520","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wynn, K. Recent efforts to collect information for the assessment of water quality in the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo Basin have involved Federal agencies on both sides of the 1,248-mile U.S.-Mexico border?U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Secretaria de Desarollo Social (Secretary for Social Development, Mexico), National Water Commission of Mexico, and International Boundary and Water Commission?as well as State and local agencies in a spirit of international cooperation. Substantial efforts have been made to gather data needed to determine the quality of water and ecological status of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo, especially at sites along the border (fig. 1). The new and exciting \nwork being done in the Mineral Resource \nProgram in the U.S. Geological Survey \n(USGS) usually begins with the question, \n\"Where are the known deposits?\" A \nmineral-resource data base containing \nthis type of information and more can be \nuseful not just to USGS scientists, but to \nanyone who needs such data. Users of the \ndata bases from outside the USGS \ninclude mining and exploration \ncompanies, environmental groups, \nacademia, other Federal Agencies, and \nthe general public. \nAt present, the USGS has two large \nmineral-resource data bases, MRDS \n(Mineral Resource Data System) and \nMAS (Minerals Availability System). \nMRDS was built and is mamtained by the \nUSGS, and MAS was built and \nmaintained by the Bureau of Mines. In \n1996, after the Bureau was abolished, \nMAS was transferred to the USGS. \nThe two data bases were compiled for \ndifferent purposes and contain very \ndifferent mformation. For instance, MAS \ncontains information on costs, details of \nmining methods, and feasibility studies. \nMRDS has mineralogical and geologic \ndata that are not contained in MAS. Because they are both mineral-resource \ndata bases, however, they contain some information in common, such as location, \nname(s) of sites, and commodities \npresent. \nBoth data bases are international in \nscope, and both are quite large. MRDS \ncontains over 110,000 records, while \nMAS has over 220,000. One reason that \nMAS has more records is that it contains \ninformation on smelters, mill sites, and \nfossil fuel sites, as well as mineral- resource sites. The USGS is working to \ncombine the information in both data \nbases. This is a large undertaking that \nwill require some years to complete. The data base (Site Specific Water Use Data System) is updated annually or as more current water-use information becomes available. Information about amounts of water withdrawn, sources of water, how the water was used, and how much water was returned is available to those involved in establishing water-resource policy and to those managing water resources. In 1978, the USGS entered into a cooperative program with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to inventory water use in Wisconsin. Since that time, three reports summarizing water use have been published (Lawrence and Ellefson, 1982; Ellefson and others, 1987; Ellefson and others, 1993). Ellefson and others (1993) present 1990 water-use data in a map and graph format. Because water use changes with time, an update report is periodically required.
