Four of the five curves show similar characteristics with an increase in the slope when the water level is below land surface.  Monthly stage-duration curves, developed for one of the stations, reflect the seasonal trends of the water level.\r\n\r\nRecession curves were prepared for the same five stations.  These curves represent the average water-level decline during periods of little or no rainfall.  They show the decline in level at the end of 10, 20, and 60 days for any given initial stage. Water samples were analyzed by automated chemical techniques for total ortho plus acid-hydrolyzable phosphorus (P-P04), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrate nitrogen (N02-N), and nitrate nitrogen (N03-N).\r\n\r\nPhosphorus (P-P04) concentration averaged about 0.50 mg/l (milligram per liter) during the wet season; the average concentration was slightly higher during the dry season.  At many sites sampled during the wet and dry seasons, less that 0.01 mg/l of phosphorus was found.  At one site in Broward County near a point of sewage outfall, the concentration was 45 mg/l during the dry season.  Ammonia was the most prevalent form of nitrogen detected. Concentrations of NH3-N ranged from less than 0.01 to 14 mg/l in the wet season and from less that 0.01 to 25 mg/l in the dry season.  Throughout the study area, nitrite and nitrate concentrations were generally low in both wet and dry seasons.  Nitrite ranged from less than 0.01 to 0.70 mg/l N02-N during the wet season and slightly lower in the dry season. In southern New York, large areas in Corning, Elmire, Wellsville, Salamanca, and in many smaller communities were inundated to depths of several feet. For the purpose of this study the nine-county region has been divided into 15 subregions on the basis of hydrologic and economic considerations. Firm water supply is tabulated for each subregion by source--ground water, surface water, and imported water. Water demand in 1970 is tabulated for each subregion by type of use or demand--public supply, rural self-supply, irrigation, self-supplied industrial water and thermoelectric power generation.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The San Francisco Bay region is dependent to a large degree on imported water. Under 1970 conditions of development, the firm water supply is 2.2 million acre-feet per year; of that quantity, almost 1 million acre-feet per year is imported water. The water demand in 1970 was 1.9 million acre-feet, about half of which was consumed. Under 1970 conditions of water development and use, a series of dry years would probably necessitate some curtailment of irrigation activities in four of the subregions, where the bulk of the demands i for irrigation water. Under those same conditions there is generally ample water for municipal and industrial use throughout the region, except in eastern Marin County where the firm municipal supple does not exceed the 1970 demand for municipal and industrial water.</p>\n<br>\n<p>Although the firm water supply of the San Francisco Bay region, including imported water, is generally adequate to meet present needs, supplemental supply will be required to meet increased demand in the future. The expansion of existing surface-water facilities and the construction of new surface-water projects, now considered feasible, could provide a combined firm supplemental yield of slightly more than 1 million acre-feet per year, almost three-fourths of which would be available for import by those subregions that might experience a water deficient in the future. However, any supplemental water that might be developed by such alternative methods as desalination of brackish or salt water, weather modification, and various conservation measure, will correspondingly reduce requirement for supplemental water from the more conventional sources.</p>\n<br>\n<p>The aspect of water quality is not discussed in this paper. Because of the present availability of imported water of good or acceptable quality, water quality, as it affects the supply, is not a serious problem at this time, except perhaps in local areas adjacent to San Francisco Bay and in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. In those areas ground water has been degraded by salinity intrusion. The relations are based on analysis of flood information for approximately 200 sites, 42 of which are in metropolitan areas of the North Carolina Piedmont providence. The estimating relations are limited to providing flood discharge estimate at open-channel sites in the Piedmont province of North Carolina where runoff is unaffected by artificial storage or diversion. The estimate are most reliable for smaller size floods at sires where the drainage area ranges between 0.3 and 150 square miles, where the L/&radic;s ratio ranges between 0.1 and 9.0, and where impervious cover of less than 30 percent is uniformly distributed over the basin.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Changes from rural to urban conditions significantly affect flood flows. Urban development may reduce the basin laf time to one-sixteenth that of comparable natural system. This reduction in basin lag time, along with the increased storm runoff resulting from impervious cover, increases the flood-peak discharge by a factor that ranges up to five. Sand composes about 25 percent of the total sediment transported by the river into its estuary. The annual sand load averages about 4,600,000 tons, equivalent to a deposition of about 2,100 acre-feet of sand per year.<br></p><p>Most of this sand probably enters the ocean, some is deposited in the estuary, and the amount furnished to nearby beaches probably is small. Of the sand and finer sediment debouched by the Eel River into the ocean, the major part is scattered over the continental margin, some is trapped by the Eel Canyon (not shown in fig. 1), and some is deposited offshore near the Eel River mouth. The Eel River probably supplies most of the sand found along the beaches between Centerville Beach and the entrance to Humboldt Bay.
