Fresh ground water is mostly in unconsolidated deposits derived from the Coast Ranges on the west and the Sierra Nevada on the east.. The interfingering of Coast Range and Sierran alluvium, together with the variability and lenticularity of each, causes variation in the hydrologic properties both vertically and horizontally in San Joaquin Valley deposits. A persistent confining stratum, the Corcoran Clay Member of the Tulare Formation, can be correlated through most of the study area. Informally, the deposits above the clay are termed the upper units the clay is termed the confining clay stratums and the deposits from the bottom of the clay to the base of fresh water, where known, are termed the lower unit. The upper unit is composed of beds, lenses, and tongues of gravel, sand, and clay ranging in thickness from about 100 feet in the north to 500 feet at the south end of the study area. A distinctive white clay, at or near the base of the upper unit, can be traced across the center of the valley. The confining clay stratum is the greenish to bluish gray lacustrine Corcoran Clay Member of the Tulare Formation; it ranges from 0 to 130 feet in thickness. No attempt to delineate the top and bottom of the Tulare Formation was made because of the thickness and similarity of deposits overlying and underlying the Corcoran. The lower unit is lithologically similar to the upper unit and ranges in thickness, where the base of fresh water has been mapped, from 90 to more than 1,400 feet.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr73119","usgsCitation":"Hotchkiss, W.R., 1972, Generalized subsurface geology of the water-bearing deposits, northern San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 73-119, iv, 18 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr73119.","productDescription":"iv, 18 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":84851,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0119/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":162303,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0119/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":394221,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_52127.htm"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"northern San Joaquin Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.6083,\n 36.75\n ],\n [\n -120.1056,\n 36.75\n ],\n [\n -120.1056,\n 37.8711\n ],\n [\n -121.6083,\n 37.8711\n ],\n [\n -121.6083,\n 36.75\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6aec64","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hotchkiss, W. In order to meet the project's objective, a daily sediment sampling program at streamflow- gaging stations on Crosswicks Creek, Cooper River, Maurice River, and Raccoon Creek was established.
\n
Because of protracted drought, which resulted in unusually low sediment discharges, the period of data collection at these daily stations was extended. Upon reviewing these records, three partial-record stations were established on the Pennsauken, Big Timber, and Mantua Creeks in 1970 to complete the areal coverage. Records at two additional stations, Delaware River at Trenton and McDonalds Branch in Lebanon State Forest, collected as part of other cooperative projects were available also for use in this study.
\n
The purpose of this report is to summarize sediment data collected at selected stream-sampling sites in southern New Jersey. Computations of excepted average annual yields at each sampling site were made and utilized to estimate the annual yield at ungaged sites. Similar data currently are being compiled for streams draining Pennsylvania and Delaware. This report, in the form of a catalog, summarizes the results of routine earthquake locations from that network for the year 1971, and provides the basic data for further studies to be published elsewhere. Similar catalogs for 1969 and 1970 have been prepared by Lee, Roller, Bauer, and Johnson, (1972), and Lee, Roller, Meagher, and Bennett, (1972).

We located a total of 2,429 events that occurred in 1971 from primarily 34,111 first P-wave arrival times recorded at 121 seismograph stations. Among these events, 339 were blasts (mostly in quarries), 8 were suspected blasts, and 41 were either too far away from available stations or too small in magnitude to be adequately located. The remaining 2,041 events which were identified as earthquakes are presented in the catalog. The 121 seismograph stations consisted of 93 telemetered stations operated by NCER, and 28 stations operated by several other organizations. The present catalog covers earthquakes which occurred in a smaller area but in greater detail than those covered by the UCB Bulletins. For example, the UCB Bulletins for 1971 (Cloud and Qamar, 1972; Cloud, Tomblin, and Litehiser, 1972) list a total of 116 earthquakes (most with magnitude greater than 2.5) in the region covered by this report (a coastal strip from Santa Rosa to Parkfield). In addition, we attempted to use all available data in locating earthquakes within and near our seismic network.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr72225","usgsCitation":"Lee, W., Meagher, K., Bennett, R., and Matamoros, E., 1972, Catalog of earthquakes along the San Andreas fault system in central California for the year 1971: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-225, 67 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr72225.","productDescription":"67 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":428851,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0225/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":139484,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0225/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"central California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.43296390791616,\n              37.65519212493113\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.43296390791616,\n              34.255391070188026\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.87009808023436,\n              34.255391070188026\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.87009808023436,\n              37.65519212493113\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.43296390791616,\n              37.65519212493113\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f3e4b07f02db5efb18","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, W.H.K.","contributorId":35303,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lee","given":"W.H.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153954,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Meagher, K.L.","contributorId":65067,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Meagher","given":"K.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153956,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Bennett, R.E.","contributorId":39775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bennett","given":"R.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153955,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Matamoros, E.E.","contributorId":9242,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Matamoros","given":"E.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153953,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

These models, which were developed from historical streamflow and and rainfall records, are based on rainfall-runoff and unit-hydrograph procedures involving an arbitrary separation of the flood hydrograph. These models assume the flood hydrograph to be composed of only two flow components, direct (storm) runoff, and base flow. Expressions describing these two flow components are derived from streamflow and rainfall records and are combined analytically to form algorithms (models), which are programmed for processing on a digital computing system.
\n
\n
Most Hillsborough and Alafia River flood discharges can be simulated with expected relative errors less than or equal to 30 percent and flood peaks can be simulated with average relative errors less than 15 percent.
\n
\n
Because of the inadequate rainfall network that is used in obtaining input data for the North Prong Alafia River model, simulated peaks are frequently in error by more than 40 percent, particularly for storms having highly variable areal rainfall distribution.
\n
\n
Simulation errors are the result of rainfall sample errors and, to a lesser extent, model inadequacy. Data errors associated with the determination of mean basin precipitation are the result of the small number and poor areal distribution of rainfall stations available for use in the study. Model inadequacy, however, is attributed to the basic underlying theory, particularly the rainfall-runoff relation.
\n
\n
These models broaden and enhance existing water-management capabilities within these basins by allowing the establishment and implementation of programs providing for continued development in these areas. Specifically, the models serve not only as a basis for forecasting floods, but also for simulating hydrologic information needed in flood-plain mapping and delineating and evaluating alternative flood control and abatement plans.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Tampa, FL","doi":"10.3133/ofr72382","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with Southwest Florida Water Management District","usgsCitation":"Turner, J.F., 1972, Hydrograph simulation models of the Hillsborough and Alafia Rivers, Florida: a preliminary report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-382, 107 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr72382.","productDescription":"107 p.","numberOfPages":"107","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":287744,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287743,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0382/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Alafia River;Hillsborough River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -82.5,27.75 ], [ -82.5,28.5 ], [ -82.0,28.5 ], [ -82.0,27.75 ], [ -82.5,27.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2de4b07f02db61475b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Turner, James F. As a result of this study, small ground-water supplies have been developed for the Virgin Islands National Park. \r\n\r\nGround water occurs in significant but limited quantities in the fractured volcanic rock throughout most of the Island. Yield of wells in this aquifer ranges from less than 100 to about 2,000 gpd (gallons per day). The average long-term yield of the three drilled wells in use by the National Park Service in 1967 was about 1,000 gpd. Yield ofl,000 to 5,000 gpd may be expected in the Coral Bay and the Reef Bay areas. \r\n\r\nEstimated total recharge of the fractured volcanic rock on St. John, based on a recharge of 1 to 3 inches per year, is 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 gpd. Perhaps as much as a quarter to a third of this water could be developed practically, depending on the rainfall in a given year. The chemical quality of the ground water in the fractured-rock aquifer in areas uncontaminated by sea water ranges from 600 to 2,000 mg/l (milligrams per liter) or more dissolved solids. Water from-formations in the higher altitudes is of better quality than that in the lower formations. \r\n\r\nSmall quantities of ground water are available from beach sand, alluvium, and fractured rock near the sea. However, these sources tend to be brackish and are subject to salt-water encroachment. \r\n\r\nThere are no perennial streams on St. John. There are a few spring-fed pools in stream channels, however, that are sustained, except in severe drought. Storm runoff is estimated to average 1 inch over the island annually, and evaporation from open water surfaces is about 70 inches per year. Ponds can be developed, but because of the high .evaporation they may be unreliable during droughts. \r\n\r\nRain water collected in cisterns from roofs and catchments yield about 50 gpd per 1,000 square feet of catch area during an average year of rainfall. This is the main method of Water supply for domestic use on the Island; it will probably be continued even if a public distribution system is made available, because of the limited quantity of other natural water.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr7278","issn":"0094-9140","usgsCitation":"Cosner, O.J., 1972, Water in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-78, iv, 126 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr7278.","productDescription":"iv, 126 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":52208,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0078/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52207,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0078/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":155916,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0078/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fbe4b07f02db5f4999","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cosner, O. Such disruption could result from natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, or landslides or from such other causes as dam failures fallout of radioactive material or other toxic substance from the atmosphere or other toxic substances from the atmosphere or direct introduction (either accidental or deliberate) of any substance that would render the water unfit for use. Prolonged disruption of public water supplies not only causes personal hardships but also endangers health and safety unless suitable alternative emergency supplies can be provided. The degree of hardship and danger generally increases in direct relation to the population density. Ground water because it occurs beneath protective soil and rock materials is less subject to sudden major contamination than are surface-water bodies. For this reason and also because of its widespread availability in the Puget Sound region ground water is especially desireable as a sources of emergency supplies for drinking or other uses requiring water of good quality. In much of the area existing wells would be suitable as safe sources of emergency supplies.","language":"English","doi":"10.3133/ofr72123","usgsCitation":"Foxworthy, B., 1972, Emergency ground-water supplies in the Seattle-Tacoma urban complex and adjacent areas, Washington: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-123, 1 Map: sheet 63 x 86 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr72123.","productDescription":"1 Map: sheet 63 x 86 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":170141,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":84798,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0123/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"250000","country":"United States","state":"Washington","city":"Seattle;Tacoma","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -123,46.666666666666664 ], [ -123,48.166666666666664 ], [ -121.58333333333333,48.166666666666664 ], [ -121.58333333333333,46.666666666666664 ], [ -123,46.666666666666664 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a19e4b07f02db605897","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Foxworthy, B.
