The part of the park discussed embraces an area of about 400 square miles comprising isolated mesas, precipitous canyons, and dissected broad benches near the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers, the only perennial streams in the area. The climate is arid to semiarid; normal annual precipitation ranges from less than 8 to about 10 inches. Potential evapotranspiration is about 41 inches annually.</p><p>Geology of the park is characterized by nearly horizontal strata that dip gently northward. Exposed rock formations and deposits range in age from Middle Pennsylvanian to Holocene. Owing to the elevated and deeply dissected topography, only parts of the Cedar Mesa and White Rim Sandstone Members of the Cutler Formation of Permian age have potential for development of wells. Strata above and below them support only small springs, are dry, or contain brine.</p><p>In the northwest part of the park, the Green River at Taylor Canyon is a potential source of surface water for public supplies for the Island In The Sky area and a small part of the northwest White Rim area. It will require filtration and treatment before use. In the same area, two unused wells in Taylor Canyon will supply enough water for present requirements from the White Rim Sandstone Member of the Cutler Formation, about 140 gallons per minute combined, but yield mineralized water that will require treatment before use. Springs yielding good water at the Island In The Sky and White Rim are mostly intermittent and too small for public-water supply. Most of the White Rim area is dry, having no usable ground water. In The Needles area, wells provide water of good quality from the Cedar Mesa Sandstone Member of the Cutler Formation. Springs yielding good water in the same area are available for supplementary supplies. West of The Needles, The Grabens area is without springs or potential aquifers bearing usable water.</p><p>During 1970 about 510,000 gallons of water was used in Canyonlands National Park. Of this amount, 110,000 gallons was supplied to Island In The Sky by tank truck from a source outside the park, and about 400,000 gallons was withdrawn from the well in use at The Needles. Estimated total annual requirements in 10 years (1980) may be as much as 6 million gallons. Sources of water supplies within the park now in use and potential sources of surface water or ground water outlined by this investigation will meet the estimated requirements. Precambrian rocks are exposed in the western quarter of the quadrangle. To the east the Precambrian rocks are overlain by limestone of Permian age and by Quaternary sand and gravel. \r\n\r\nThe Precambrian rocks consist of granite intruded by a swarm of andesite dikes. These igneous rocks are overlain by sedimentary formations of the Precambrian Murdama Group comprising conglomerate of the Z'reiba Formation which grades upward into graywacke of the Abt Formation. Rhyolite dikes intrude the Abt. Possibly owing to these rhyolite dikes, or possibly as a result of weak mineralization along west-northwest- and east-trending faults related to the Najd fault zone, the area underlain by graywacke and conglomerate is characterized by threshold or anomalous amounts of beryllium in samples of wadi sand. Two of these, here termed Areas 1 and 2, were mapped geologically and sampled geochemically in June and July 1970 by .4. E. Weissenborn, U. S. Geological Survey, and Omer Oner and Metin Sengun, Mineral Research and Exploration Institute (MTA), an agency of the Turkish Government. This study was part of a mineral exploration and training project conducted by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with MTA under the auspices of the Agency for International Development, U. S. Department of State. Mapping and sampling of four of the other areas was completed in August and September by Oner and Sengun, but this report concerns only Areas 1 and 2.</p><p>The geological environment in Areas 1 and 2 appears favorable for additional ore bodies of the Ergani-Maden type, which have been Turkey's most important producer of copper. Weak but distinct anomalies developed by the geochemical sampling in Area 1 adjacent to the Mihrap Dagi deposit suggest that other ore bodies maybe found along the northwesterly trend defined by the Mihrap Dagi, Arpa Meydan, Ana Yatak mines, and the Mizir Tepe prospect. Recommendations are made for 8 drill holes in Area 1 to test this possibility. </p><p>Two additional holes are also recommended in Arc.: 1. Two less pronounced anomalies were developed in Area 2. </p><p>Two drill holes are suggested to test them.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological These relations and measures of channel dimensions can be used to estimate streamflow characteristics for ungaged streams in the Colorado mountain region. The standard error of estimate is 18.3 percent for the relation with mean annual runoff, and ranges from about 30 percent to 45 percent for the relations with peak discharges having recurrence intervals of 2, 5, 10, 25, and 50 years. The data on low flows are needed for such purposes as (1) designing and operating municipal and industrial water-supply systems; (2) classifying streams as to their potential for waste disposal; (3) defining the amount of water available for irrigation, for maintaining streamflow as required by law or agreement, and for fish propagation; and (4) designing water-storage facilities. Data on stream temperatures are important to many water users because of the many biological, chemical, and physical properties of water that are dependent on temperature. Agricultural and domestic users as well as municipal, industrial and fishery agencies are concerned with water temperatures. In this report, low-flow data are accompanied by information on seasonal variations in water temperatures at sites selected as representing regional stream-temperature patterns. Because low flows and high water temperatures commonly occur together, they may impose constraints on various uses of the region's streams.
