It borders the Pacific Ocean on the west and the Santa Cruz Mountains on the east. The city of Watsonville is the largest center of population.\r\n\r\nDeposits that range in age from Pliocene to Holocene make up the ground-water reservoir. These include, from oldest to youngest, the Purisima Formation, Aromas Red Sands of Allen (1946), terrace deposits, alluvium, and dune sand. These deposits underlie an area of about 80 square miles and have a maximum thickness of about 4,000 feet. The alluvium yields most of the water pumped from wells in the area.\r\n\r\nPre-Pliocene rocks underlie and form the boundaries of the ground-water reservoir. These rocks contain ground water in fractures and in sandstone beds. However, they are not an important source of ground water. There is close continuity between the geology of the Pajaro Valley area and that of the Soquel-Aptos area, which is contiguous on the north.\r\n\r\nGround water in the Pajaro Valley area is derived from three sources: (1) Precipitation within the Pajaro Valley area that reaches the ground-water body by direct infiltration or by seepage from streams, (2) seepage from the Pajaro River as it crosses the Pajaro Valley carrying runoff which originates upstream from the valley, and (3) precipitation in the Soquel-Aptos area that infiltrates and then moves southeastward at depth into the Pajaro Valley area.\r\n\r\nGround water in most wells in the Pajaro Valley area occurs under confined (artesian) conditions; the only exception is ground water in the upper, near-surface part of the alluvium and that in the dune sand. It moves south from the north part of the area and southwest away from the San Andreas fault toward and out under Monterey Bay. In the south part of the area, ground-water movement is almost due west. The San Andreas fault probably is the only fault that has a restrictive effect on the movement of ground water.\r\n\r\nWater levels in wells in the Pajaro Valley area in 1970 averaged about 2 feet lower than that in 1950. Ground-water pumpage averaged 46,100 acre-feet per year during the period 1963 through 1969.\r\n\r\nThere are two distinct ground-water quality zones in the Pajaro Valley area: a shallow, semiperched zone of poor-quality water and a deeper, confined zone of good quality-water. Also, sea-water intrusion has occurred in limited areas near the mouth of the Pajaro River and in the vicinity of McClusky Slough.\r\n\r\nThe channel of the Pajaro River near Aromas and the beds of streams that drain the area north and northeast of Watsonville have the greatest potential for artificial recharge by surface infiltration of water. The gravel at the base of the alluvium is the best zone for injection of water through wells.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr73199","usgsCitation":"Muir, K.S., 1972, Geology and ground water of the Pajaro Valley area, Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 73-199, Report: iv, 33 p.; 3 Plates: 33.53 × 21.22 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr73199.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 33 p.; 3 Plates: 33.53 × 21.22 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":388963,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_2298.htm"},{"id":84907,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0199/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":170866,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0199/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":84910,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0199/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":84908,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0199/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":84909,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1973/0199/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Monterey County, Santa Cruz County","otherGeospatial":"Pajaro Valley area","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -121.87408447265625,\n 36.81808022778526\n ],\n [\n -121.6021728515625,\n 36.81808022778526\n ],\n [\n -121.6021728515625,\n 37.0833\n ],\n [\n -121.87408447265625,\n 37.0833\n ],\n [\n -121.87408447265625,\n 36.81808022778526\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cacf","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Muir, K. The anomalies and mean values are highest in modern beach (maximum 1.3 and mean 0.22 ppm Hg) and nearshore subsurface gravels (maximum 0.6 and mean .06 ppm Hg) along the highly mineralized Seward Peninsula and in organic rich silt (maximum 0.16 and mean 0.10 ppm Hg) throughout the region; the mean values are lowest in offshore sands (0.03 ppm Hg). Although gold mining may be partially responsible for high mercury levels in the beaches near Nome, Alaska, equally high or greater concentrations of mercury occur in ancient glacial sediments immediately offshore (0.6 ppm) and in modern unpolluted beach sediments at Bluff (0.45 - 1.3 ppm); this indicates that the contamination effects of mining may be no greater than natural concentration processes in the Seward Peninsula region. The background content of mercury (0.03) throughout the central area of northeastern Bering Sea is similar to that elsewhere in the world. The low mean values (0.04 ppm) even immediately offshore from mercury-rich beaches, suggests that in the surface sediments of northeastern Bering Sea, the highest concentrations are limited to the beaches near mercury sources; occasionally, however, low mercury anomalies occur offshore in glacial drift derived from mercury source regions of Chukotka and Seward Peninsula and reworked by Pleistocene shoreline processes. The minimal values offshore may be attributable to beach entrapment of heavy minerals containing mercury and/or dilution effects of modern sedimentation.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr72268","collaboration":"This report is preliminary and has not been edited or reviewed for conformity with Geological Survey standards","usgsCitation":"Nelson, C.H., Pierce, D., Leong, K., and Wang, F., 1972, Mercury distribution in ancient and modern sediment of northeastern Bering Sea: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-268, 29 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr72268.","productDescription":"29 p.","costCenters":[{"id":387,"text":"Mineral Resources Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":418963,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0268/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":148973,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0268/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Bering Sea","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -174.52966588571758,\n              64.07996762645567\n            ],\n            [\n              -174.52966588571758,\n              53.979342251454085\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.99607380152727,\n              53.979342251454085\n            ],\n            [\n              -157.99607380152727,\n              64.07996762645567\n            ],\n            [\n              -174.52966588571758,\n              64.07996762645567\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db624bcb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nelson, C. The oldest sequence is called the Bi'r Khountina Group. It consists of conglomerate marble, andesite, and graywacke. Unconformably overlying this group is a sequence of graywacke with minor lava called the Murdama Group. In a small area in the southern part of the quadrangle, these rocks are unconformably overlain by rhyolitic tuff and rhyolite tentatively correlated with the Shammar Rhyolite. \r\n\r\nThe older of these sedimentary and volcanic rocks were intruded by diorite and gabbro and by a large pluton of alkalic granite. A contact metamorphic aureole was formed in the Bi'r Khountina and Murdama Groups adjacent to the granite, and feeder dikes of the Sbmmmar Rhyolite(?) intrude the granite. \r\n\r\nThe Bi'r Khountina Group is folded into a south-plunging asymmetrical anticlinorium, the west limb of which is repeated across northwest-trending faults. The Murdama Group appears to have been folded along the same axes, but the contact aureole against the alkalic granite and the imprint of the west-northwest striking Najd fault zone cause the rocks of the Murdama Group to appear to trend westward. \r\n\r\nResults of spectrographic and chemical analyses of wadi sand, heavy-mineral concentrates, and detrital magnetite show small anomalies. The ultramafic rocks intruded prior to the deposition of the Murdama Group are the source of anomalous chromium and lanthanum and of threshold nickel, scandium, and vanadium. The intrusive rocks younger than the Murdama Group are sources for anomalous lead and threshold silver, boron, barium, beryllium, zirconium, lanthanum, and tin. \r\n\r\nOne small ancient working, probably opened for gold, is present, and at least four places in the Precambrian part of the quadrangle ere potentially favorable for gold, silver, and lead. Chromite is a potential resource in the northeastern part of the quadrangle.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr72279","usgsCitation":"Overstreet, W.C., and Whitlow, J.W., 1972, Reconnaissance geology of the Precambrian rocks in the Bi'r Ghamrah quadrangle, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 72-279, ii, 33 leaves :col. ill., folded map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr72279.","productDescription":"ii, 33 leaves :col. ill., folded map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":146412,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0279/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":44212,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0279/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":44213,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1972/0279/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a50e4b07f02db628aed","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Overstreet, William C.","contributorId":73586,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Overstreet","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170895,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Whitlow, Jesse William","contributorId":18366,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitlow","given":"Jesse","email":"","middleInitial":"William","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170894,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The instrument used was a commercial \"falling stream\" turbidimeter that measured the relative transparency of a gravity induced smooth flat sample stream formed as the flow drops vertically from an orifice.
\n
Output results were recorded on a strip-chart recorder as a function of concentration, up to about 100,000 mg/2, for a range of particle sizes and for three kinds of sediment--a fine sand, a silty alluvial soil, and a clayey residual soil. The sensitivity range was improved by use of both the 1/8- and 1/16-inch thick orifices. The use of the two orifice or nozzle sizes provided data useful in evaluation of the effect of particle size and type of sediment at different concentrations. The unique relative transparency-concentration relationships were more linear for coarse than for fine sediments of a given kind. It was concluded that curvature in this relationship resulted from light reflections from the surface of the particles and (or) the fact that some particles moved through the system while in the \"shadow\" of other particles closer to the light source.
\n
The ratio of suspended-sediment concentration to the square root of the median particle size of sand-sized sediments was found to be a useful parameter for elimination of the effect of particle size in the relative transparency-concentration relationships. The 12 study areas were chosen to sample watersheds having different rainfall, topography, geology, and soils. In five of the study areas (North, Little Elm, Mukewater, Little Pond-North Elm, and Pin Oak Creeks), streamflow and rainfall records were collected prior to construction of the floodwater-retarding structures, thus affording the opportunity for analyses of the conditions 'before and after\" development.
