The sedimentary deposits of gravel, sand, silt, and clay were separated into geologic map units on the basis of their post-depositional soil development, texture, and geomorphology. Some of the geologic units are associated with different landforms having recognizable topographic expression such as alluvial fans, natural stream terraces, levees, and interfluvial basins. The relative ages of these unites were established on the basis of intensity of soil profile development, stratigraphic position, and geomorphic expression. The older deposits exhibit strongly developed soil profiles with strong horizon differentiation whereas younger deposits display minimal soil profile development, consisting primarily of organic matter accumulations near the land surface. Geomorphic expression and degree of erosion and dissection were additional criteria used to aid in the age determinations. For example, younger deposits form well-defined morphologic features such as levees, terraces, and broad, undissected alluvial fans along the margin of the bay basin and are related to present drainage patterns. The oldest deposits shown on this map (QTs) are structurally deformed by folding and faulting and therefore exhibit no original depositional geomorphic features. These curves provide a means of estimating, through use of data telemetered from a water-quality monitor on Beech Creek, the acid load in the stream at any time. These estimates of acid loads in Beech Creek will enable the operators of Foster Joseph Sayers Dam on Bald Eagle Creek to release sufficient alkaline water from the reservoir to prevent fish kills in lower Bald Eagle Creek that could be caused by the acid from Beech Creek.</p><p>The acid content of the West Branch Susquehanna River upstream from the city of Lock Haven usually exceeds the amount that can be neutralized by Bald Eagle Creek. The number of wells increased from about 500 in 1960 to 2,560 in 1970. In 1968 the U.S. Geological Survey began a study in cooperation with the Colorado Water Conservation Board; the Colorado Division of Water Resources, Office of the State Engineer; and the Management Districts of the northern High Plains to provide information for administration and management of the vital ground-water reserves of the northern High Plains.</p><p>The northern High Plains of Colorado is formed from an erosional remanent of the Ogallala Formation of Pliocene Age that extends from the South Platte River on the north to the Arkansas River on the south, and from Limon, Colo. on the west across the Colorado State line on the east (fig. 1). This area includes all&nbsp;or part of 11 counties and contains about 9,500 square miles. General information describing the ground-water resources of the northern High Plains of Colorado is presented in table 1. Plate 1 shows the net changes in water level between 1964 and 1971. Other published water-level change maps are for the period from 1964-68 and 1964-69 (Boettcher and others, 1969). The map (pl. 1) is based on annual water-level measurements made in 1964 and 1971 in about 300 wells tapping the Ogallala aquifer. Areas with either a net decline or a net rise are shown. Large declines recorded near Yuma and Burlington correspond to relatively high concentrations (2 per sq mi) of high-capacity wells. Also included in this report are 11 hydrographs typical of the water-level changes during this period (figs. 2-4). The hydrographs show water-level changes from 1964, or as early as 1956 to 1971, and illustrate the consistency of water-level change rates. The state was divided into three flood regions, and the resulting equations and associated standard error of prediction are presented for each of these regions. The effects of the construction are shown by comparing the data collected from the affected basin with data collected from a similar adjacent basin, unaffected by construction.</p><p>During the pond construction, base-flow sediment concentrations increased from the expected 6 mg/1 (milligrams per liter) to an average of 35 mg/l. No identifiable sources of ground-water inflow below t he surface of the river could be found in the imagery. The thermal patterns from the generating plants and the major tri butary inflow are readily apparent in imagery obtained from an altitude of 305 meters. Though the patterns are generally discernible in the imagery from 1,067-meter and 1,524-meter altitudes, there is not sufficient ground resolution to make any but the most general qualitative analyses. The quality of the imagery varied with land-water temperature relations as well as with instrument properties.</p>\n<p>Portions of the tape-recorded imagery were processed in a color-coded quantization to enhance the displays and to attach quantitative significance to the data. Apparent radiant temperature computations from the 305-meter imagery were generally within l&deg; Celsius of ground-truth data.</p>\n<p>The study indicates a marked decrease in water temperature in the Missouri River prior to early fall and a moderate increase in temperature in late fall because of the Lake Sakakawea impoundment. Flood-frequency relations are presented which provide an estimate of the flood-peak discharge for floods with recurrence intervals from 2.33 to 100 years for basins with various degrees of existing or projected urban development. Drainage area sizes for which the relations are applicable range from 0.1 to 50 square miles.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>These generalized relations will be useful to the urban planner and designer until more comprehensive studies are completed for the individual urban areas within the State. The study by the U.S. Geo- logical Survey was made during 1967-70 in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Soil Conservation Service cooperated by providing services; and counties, cities, irrigation districts, and some local organizations and businesses in both Utah and Idaho cooperated financially through the Utah Department of Natural Resources. In addition to this report, results of the study are presented in a basic-data release (McGreevy and Bjorklund, 1970) and in an interpretive report in preparation.</p><p>Geologic and hydrologic data are combined and presented on a series of cross sections.
