Results of investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) indicate that concentrations of total radium in water samples from 33 percent of 170 wells in the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer system in southern New Jersey exceeded the MCL of 5 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) (fig. 1). Wells containing water in which concentrations of total radium were greater than the MCL typically are found where the Bridgeton Formation crops out, in or near an agricultural area, where ground water is acidic (pH less than 5), and where nitrate concentrations generally exceed 5 mg/L (milligrams per liter). Leaching of nitrogen, calcium, and magnesium from agricultural chemicals (fertilizer, lime) applied to cropland may increase the mobility of radium in ground water. Gross alphaparticle activities exceeded the USEPA MCL of 15 pCi/L in water from 14 percent of 127 wells. A statistically significant 2:1 ratio between gross alpha-particle activity and concentration of total radium indicates that gross alpha-particle activity can be used as a screening tool to predict the presence of water that may have a high total-radium concentration.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs06298","usgsCitation":"Szabo, Z., and dePaul, V., 1998, Radium-226 and radium-228 in shallow ground water, southern New Jersey: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 062-98, 6 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs06298.","productDescription":"6 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":34196,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0062/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":117942,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0062/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -73.99017333984375,\n              40.212440718286466\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.43511962890624,\n              40.22502421060499\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.234375,\n              39.60992025700077\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.2947998046875,\n              39.29817374735305\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.16021728515624,\n              39.17478791493289\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.02288818359375,\n              39.189690821096804\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.89654541015625,\n              39.16839998800286\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.91851806640624,\n              39.07890809706475\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.96246337890625,\n              38.993572058209466\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.97894287109375,\n              38.927365763942475\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.89105224609375,\n              38.92309226598178\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.78668212890625,\n              38.99997583555929\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.70428466796875,\n              39.10662011662115\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.60540771484375,\n              39.251397769004896\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.344482421875,\n              39.41497702499074\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.0863037109375,\n              39.76632525654491\n            ],\n            [\n              -73.99017333984375,\n              40.212440718286466\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db649ace","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Szabo, Zoltan 0000-0002-0760-9607 zszabo@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0760-9607","contributorId":2240,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Szabo","given":"Zoltan","email":"zszabo@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":153522,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"dePaul, Vincent T. 0000-0002-7977-5217","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7977-5217","contributorId":13972,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"dePaul","given":"Vincent T.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153523,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

During the 1960s and 1970s, data collected in Suisun Bay were analyzed to develop a conceptual model of how water, salt, and sediment move within and through the Bay. This conceptual model has been used to manage freshwater flows from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to Suisun Bay to improve habitat for several threatened and endangered fish species. Instrumentation used to measure water velocity, salinity, and suspended-solids concentration (SSC) greatly improved during the 1980s and 1990s. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has utilized these new instruments to collect one of the largest, high-quality hydrodynamic and sediment data sets available for any estuary. Analysis of these new data has led to the revision of the conceptual model of circulation and sediment transport in Suisun Bay.</p>","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/fs04798","usgsCitation":"Schoellhamer, D., and Burau, J.R., 1998, Summary of findings about circulation and the estuarine turbidity maximum in Suisun Bay, California: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 047-98, 1 folded sheet ([6] p.) : ill. Cholera, typhoid fever, bacterial dysentery, infectious hepatitis, and cryptosporidiosis are some of the well known waterborne diseases that spread through water contaminated and fecal matter. Eye, ear, nose, and throat infections also can result from contact with contaminated water. In general, methods are not routinely used to detect pathogens in water. Instead, bacteria such as total coliforms, fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci, <i>Escherichia coli </i>(<i>E coli</i>), and enterococci are used as indicators of sanitary water quality, because they are present in high numbers in fecal material and have been shown to be associated with some waterborne disease-causing organisms. Indicator bacteria usually are harmless, more plentiful, and easier to detect than pathogens. The concentration of bacteria in a sample of water is usually expressed as the number of bacterial colonies per 100 milliliters of water sample.</p><p>As part of the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Assessment Program, 145 samples were collected and analyzed for selected water-quality constituents, fecal coliforms, and fecal streptococci at 17 sites in North and South Carolina from October 1995 through September 1996. Of the original 17 sites, 4 in South Carolina were sampled for <i>E. coli</i> and total coliforms from April through September 1997. Rapid residential and commercial development are placing increased demands on the ground-water resources in the area and increased ground-water withdrawals could affect appropriated surface-water resources. The quantity and quality of water in the area were assessed during 1993-97 in a study done by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights; Park City; Summit County; and the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District. This fact sheet presents a synopsis of the eports prepared for that study. Data collected during the 1994 and 1995 water years are presented in Downhour and Brooks (1996). A water year extends from October through September rather than January through December of a calendar year. Streamflow and surface-water quality; ground- water recharge, movement, discharge, and quality; water budgets; and snowmelt simulations are described in Brooks, Mason, and Susong (1998). The purpose of the study was to provide the Utah Division of Water Rights with data to assist them in- making water management decisions.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.3133/fs09998","usgsCitation":"Susong, D.D., Brooks, L.E., and Mason, J.L., 1998, Water resources in the area of Snyderville Basin and Park City in Summit County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 099-98, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs09998.","productDescription":"4 p.","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34194,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0099/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":125237,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1998/0099/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Summit County","city":"Park City","otherGeospatial":"Snyderville Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.7144775390625,\n              40.53780786355762\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7144775390625,\n              40.8626410807892\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.32171630859375,\n              40.8626410807892\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.32171630859375,\n              40.53780786355762\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.7144775390625,\n              40.53780786355762\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f093a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Susong, David D. ddsusong@usgs.gov","contributorId":1040,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Susong","given":"David","email":"ddsusong@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Brooks, Lynette E. 0000-0002-9074-0939 lebrooks@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9074-0939","contributorId":2718,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brooks","given":"Lynette","email":"lebrooks@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153519,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Mason, James L.","contributorId":14397,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mason","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":153520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Specifically, Microsoft plans to (1) modify a large volume of USGS geospatial data so the images can be displayed quickly and easily over the Internet, (2) implement an easy-to-use interface for low-speed connections, and (3) develop an Internet Web site capable of servicing millions of users per day.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/fs11197","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1998, U.S. Geological Survey and Microsoft Cooperative Research and Development Agreement: Geospatial Data Browsing and Retrieval Site on the World Wide Web (Superseded by FS 072-99): U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 111-97, 2 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs11197.","productDescription":"2 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":161077,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1997/0111/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59479,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/1997/0111/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"edition":"Superseded by FS 072-99","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2be4b07f02db612e47","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":529239,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Public concern has been expressed that \nsome of these constituents could migrate through the \nSnake River Plain aquifer to the Snake River in the Twin \nFalls-Hagerman area Because of these concerns the \nU.S. Department of Energy (DOE) requested that the U.S. \nGeological Survey (USGS) conduct three studies to gain a \ngreater understanding of the chemical quality of water in \nthe aquifer. One study described a one-time sampling \neffort for radionuclides, trace elements, and organic \ncompounds in the eastern part of the A&B Irrigation \nDistrict in Minidoka County (Mann and Knobel, 1990). \nAnother ongoing study involves sampling for tritium from \n19 springs on the north side of the Snake River in the \nTwin Falls-Hagerman area (Mann, 1989; Mann and Low, \n1994). A third study an ongoing annual sampling effort \nin the area between the southern boundary of the INEEL \nand Hagerman (figure 1) (hereafter referred to as the \nMagic Valley study area), is being conducted with the \nIdaho Department of Water Resources in cooperation with \nthe DOE. Data for a variety of radiochemical and \nchemical constituents from this study have been published \nby Wegner and Campbell (1991); Bartholomay, Edwards, \nand Campbell (1992, 1993, 1994a, 1994b); and \nBartholomay, Williams, and Campbell (1995, 1996, \n1997b). Data discussed in this fact sheet were taken from \nthese reports. An evaluation of data collected during the \nfirst four years of this study (Bartholomay Williams, and \nCampbell, 1997a) showed no pattern of water-quality \nchange for radionuclide data as concentrations randomly \nincreased or decreased. The inorganic constituent data \nshowed no statistical change between sample rounds.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/fs05298","usgsCitation":"Bartholomay, R.C., 1998, Effect of activities at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory on the water quality of the Snake River Plain aquifer in the Magic Valley study: U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 052-98, 4 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/fs05298.","productDescription":"4 p.","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":286107,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/0052-98/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":286106,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/fs/0052-98/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Snake River Plain","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -115.0,42.5 ], [ -115.0,43.5 ], [ -113.0,43.5 ], [ -113.0,42.5 ], [ -115.0,42.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4be4b07f02db625824","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bartholomay, Roy C. 0000-0002-4809-9287 rcbarth@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4809-9287","contributorId":1131,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bartholomay","given":"Roy","email":"rcbarth@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":153002,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
