A permeability index, based on surface geology, was used in the analysis and substantially improved the standard error of estimate as compared to previous studies. Heavy mineral assemblages of these sediments are dominated by garnet, chlorite, epidote, chloritoid, sphene, and staurolite.</p><p>The nearshore region of Nome is mainly underlain by various types of Pleistocene sediments such as relict gravel that Mantles glacial drift, relict gravel over Nome River outwash fan, relict gravelly sand of submerged beaches, and relict gravel that mantles bedrock. In places these relict sediments are covered by Holocene sandy and muddy sediments. The high concentration of heavy minerals is expected for various relict sediments, because the latter were winnowed by several transgressions and regressions of the sea during Pleistocene time. Concentration of heavy minerals, however, is greater for Holocene sand than relict gravel, which mantles glacial drift and relict gravelly sand of submerged beaches. The high concentration of heavy minerals in Holocene sand suggests the winnowing of sand by strong bottom currents. The low concentration of heavy minerals in the relict gravel on glacial drift and relict gravelly sand of submerged beaches is probably due to the heterogenous nature of relict sediments. Sand fractions of the relict sediments probably have been introduced during the Holocene time. Also, contamination of samples of relict gravel from underlying glacial drift is suspected.</p><p>A greater concentration of coarse gold particles (1 iiuii. or larger) is found in nearshore relict gravel that mantles glacial drift than in any other sediment type. Relict gravel on glacial drift, which carries high gold values, does not show a high concentration of heavy minerals or a high concentration of garnet. Two factors account for the lack of correlation between concentration of gold and the other heavy minerals: (1) contrast between hydraulic properties of the gold particles and other heavy minerals, and (2) the heterogeneous nature of relict sediments. Because of their extremely high specific gravity, coarse gold particles are not moved by longshore currents or bottom currents from relict gravel which mantles glacial drift, whereas the heavy minerals which are mostly medium to fine sand in size, are transported by longshore currents and strong bottom currents. The Holocene sand winnowed by strong bottom currents shows a high concentration of heavy minerals.</p><p>Heavy mineral assemblages are more or less similar for the various sediments. Minor compositional variations mainly reflect the effect of sorting of mineral grains according to size and specific gravity. The frequencies of garnet and staurolite are slightly higher than average for modern beach and river sediments. In nearshore sediments, garnet is most abundant in Holocene sand winnowed by strong bottom currents. Holocene silty sediment which occurs in small patches is characterized by high concentration of micaceous minerals and low concentration of garnet, because the weak currents which deposit fine sediments usually carry light micaceous minerals in great abundance and minerals of high specific gravity like garnet in small amounts. Samples of Pleistocene glacial till and Pliocene marine silt from several nearshore drill-hole locations show high concentrations of micaceous minerals and low concentration of garnet.</p><p>Holocene, Pleistocene, and Pliocene sediments of Nome are mostly derived from the same general metamorphic source rocks of the inland region. The study reach extends 150 miles from Pueblo to the Kansas State line (see fig. 1 index map). The water-resources investigation of the stream aquifer system in the Arkansas River valley, which began in 1963, is being made to provide information about the water resources for planning, management, and administration of the supply. </p><p>The objectives of the investigation are to define the effects of present water use, to determine the relation between ground and surface water, and to evaluate the effects of proposed changes in water law and management. Some wells drilled for the city of Pensacola have yielded water with unacceptably high amounts of iron and carbon dioxide, and wells have had disappointingly low yields. The city, therefore, is seeking hydrologic information, including water-quality data, in an effort to avoid the high cost of well abandonment and to plan for future expansion of the water-supply system.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Objectives and approach</p>\n<p>This study is intended to provide information on the quality and quantity of water available from the sand-and-gravel aquifer, the only fresh-water aquifer in the Pensacola area, and to delineate those areas favorable for public-supply well sites.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>The project area is southern Escambia County, from Pensacola to S.R. (State Road) 196 north of Quintette (fig. 1). Accurate discharge figures are needed for consistent day-to-day management and are required to meet treaty obligations with Canada.</p>\n<p>Because dams have been erected that completely control watersurface elevations at nearly all points in the river from Bonneville Dam to the Canadian border, conventional stream-gaging methods, used historically, are no longer adequate. Consequently, new techniques must be used to obtain the accurate discharge records required--records that are computed independently from the hydroelectric operation logs and that stand alone as the recognized flow records in the basin.</p>\n<p>This need for an accurate, independent gaging system has been met by the installation of an acoustic streamflow-measuring system in the river channel at The Dalles, Oreg. This device provides an index of water velocity by measuring the difference in traveltimes of acoustic pulses transmitted through the water in each direction along a diagonal path across the river. The flow of water along the path increases the speed of one signal and retards the speed of the other. The difference in time of travel is related linearly to the water velocity along the path. The velocity index and river stage are used as a two-variable index in the computation of flow. These variables, correlated against current-meter measurements made with specialized boat equipment, provide a reliable&nbsp;basis for computations of instantaneous and daily mean discharges.</p>\n<p>Installation of this sytem, which is the first application of an AVM (acoustic velocity meter) in a large natural channel, was completed in April 1969. It has been in continuous operation since that date. Performance has been satisfactory, and similar installations at other key points in the Columbia River basin are now under consideration. This paper covers the general theory behind acoustic velocity meters, tracing development from earlier concepts to the present commercially available system. Conclusions are that the AVM can now be considered as an operational instrument which permits accurate gaging of river discharge at many sites where conventional stream-gaging procedures have proved to be unreliable.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Portland, OR","doi":"10.3133/70174290","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with U. The information will be of use to those concerned with the design of bridges and other structures and the conduct of various operations on the flood plains of the streams. Included in the report are flood-peak records, gaging-station records, frequency curves, and water-surface profiles.</p>\n<p>Outstanding floods resulting from extremely heavy rainfall occurred in the upper basin in 1968 and 1969. Those in 1968 produced the highest flood of record at the gaging station at Independence. The flood of 26,800 cfs (cubic feet per second) at this station was the greatest in the period 1933-70. A number of the smaller tributaries experienced floods more than five times the computed 50-year flood.</p>\n<p>The flood experience on the main stem downstream from Anamosa has not been outstanding. No flood of record has exceeded the 50-year flood in this reach.</p>\n<p>Flood-profile sheets show profiles of actual flood occurrences and computed profiles of the 25- and 50-year floods at most locations. These sheets also contain tabulations of the flood discharges profiled. A low-water profile and tabulated discharge indicate the range in elevation and discharge along the streams.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Iowa
