Three large hydroelectric dams are located near the mouth of the Susquehanna River. The three dams and associated reservoirs are Safe Harbor (Lake Clarke) and Holtwood (Lake Aldred) in southern Pennsylvania and Conowingo (Conowingo Reservoir) in northern Maryland. Two of these reservoirs, Lakes Clarke and Aldred, have reached a state of equilibrium with sediment transport in the river. The third, Conowingo Reservoir, continues to accumulate sediment as well as particulate organic nitrogen and particulate phosphorus. Bottom-elevation surveys of Conowingo Reservoir made in 1959, 1990, and 1993 indicate that the reservoir will reach equilibrium with sediment transport of the river during the next 10 to 20 years. Data collected from 1985-89 indicate that the Susquehanna River transports about 1,780 million pounds of sediment, 147 million pounds of nitrogen, and 5.1 million pounds of phosphorus to the Chesapeake Bay during a year of normal streamflow. Once equilibrium is reached in the Conowingo Reservoir, these loads may increase to levels currently transported by the river to the reservoirs, about 6,600 million pounds of sediment, 153 million pounds of nitrogen, and 9.1 million pounds of phosphorus per year. Fifteen boreholes were augered in bottom sediments in the river just upstream from the dam relic, and streambottom profiles were made using ground-penetrating radar. Data from boreholes show that sediments captured by the dam foundation were deposited in two distinctly different sedimentary environments. Sediments that overlie the pre-dam channel surface consist of lacustrine clay, wood chips, silt, and sand. These lacustrine sediments are interbedded in a cyclical fashion, and they were deposited under low flow to stagnant water conditions during 1916-66, when a 17-foot-tall hydroelectric dam was in place. Demolition of the upper 13 feet of this dam in 1966 resulted in erosion of most of the lacustrine sediments, and subsequent deposition of coarser alluvium in the impoundment behind the remaining dam foundation. </p><p>Lacustrine sediments are present in the active part of the stream channel and extend from the dam foundation to about 1,300 feet upstream. The composite thickness of lacustrine sediments and overlying coarser alluvium was determined from sediment cores collected from the boreholes. A wetland restoration project at the mouth of the lake's principal inflowing stream system was implemented in 1992, primarily for the purpose of reducing sediment and nutrient loading to the lake. This function of the wetland system, which includes three retention ponds, was examined in a 32-month study (February 1993-September 1995) that included continuous monitoring of discharge of two inflowing streams and the wetland outflow, intermittent monitoring of discharge of a third inflowing stream, monthly and storm-runoff sampling to determine sediment and nutrient concentrations, and measurement of sediment accumulation in three constructed sediment retention ponds. Inflow and outflow loads of sediment and nutrients were computed from the discharge and concentration data.</p>\n<p>The wetland system consistently retained suspended sediments during the study period. Volumetric surveys of the ponds showed sediment accumulation each year, and during the 32 months, 46 percent of the inflow sediment load was retained in the wetland and the retention ponds. Retention of nutrients in the wetland system, however, was of lesser magnitude and much greater seasonal variability. Over time periods of one year or more, most nutrient forms were retained in the wetland system. Nutrient retention, relative to the 32-month inflow loads was: 19 percent of total phosphorus, 11 percent of dissolved orthophosphate, 8 percent of total ammonia plus organic nitrogen, and 0.4 percent of dissolved nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen. Of the nutrient forms measured, only dissolved ammonia, whose 32-month outflow from the wetland system was 22 percent greater than inflow, showed a long-term net release from the system. However, net releases over shorter time periods were commonly observed for all nutrients, and these occurred frequently during the growing season, suggesting probable availability to algal and macrophyte communities downstream.
