The canal will be equipped with five locks, each 600 feet long and 84 feet wide, and the channel will be a minimum of 12 feet deep and 150 feet wide. From near Ocala northeastward, the canal channel will replace much of the natural channel of the Oklawaha River, and will be excavated into beds of the so-called shallow sand aquifer of Miocene and younger age, which overlies limestone of the Floridan aquifer. Westward from Ocala most of the canal will be excavated below the potentiometric surface into limestone and dolomite of the Floridan aquifer. Water levels of Rodman, Eureka, and Inglis Pools will be controlled by dams and spillways with limited exchange of water between the pools and the aquifers. The water levels in the Summit Pool will fluctuate with the natural changes in the ground-water level of the Floridan aquifer, although the stage of the pool will be partially controlled by the stage held in the Eureka Pool. A dynamic inflow-outflow relationship will exist between the Sun, nit Pool and the Floridan aquifer. \r\n\r\nThe Floridan aquifer in the canal area is 1,000 to 1,200 feet thick and consists of limestone and dolomite of middle Eocene to Miocene age, including, from older to younger the Lake City, Avon Park and Ocala limestones plus permeable sandy, dolomitic limestone in the lower part of the Hawthorn Formation. It is possible that most of the flow to the two major springs in the area occurs in the upper 100 feet or so of the aquifer in the Ocala Limestone. The aquifer is underlain by the Oldsmar Limestone of early Eocene age and is overlain by sand, clayey sand, clay and shell beds of Miocene through Holocene age, ranging from a few feet to two or three hundred feet thick. The permeable beds overlying the Floridan aquifer constitute the shallow aquifer, while the poorly permeable ones act as confining beds where the Floridan aquifer is under artesian conditions. \r\n\r\nA north-south line drawn separating the head of Silver Springs on the west from the Oklawaha River on the east marks the approximate westward limit of a continuous blanket of Miocene-Pliocene(?) age materials covering the rocks of the Floridan aquifer. East of the line much of the aquifer is under artesian conditions, particularly in the Oklawaha River valley, although in some areas east of the valley direct recharge through thick permeable Miocene-Pliocene(?) sands occurs. West of the line, only scattered remnants of a once continuous Miocene-Pliocene(?) cover remains. Lack of the cover is a result of erosion on the crest and flanks of the Ocala Uplift, a broad northwest-southeast trending anticlinal upwarp, the axis of which is crossed by the canal route in the Dunnellon area. Over most of this area the Floridan aquifer is unconfined, and receives direct recharge through a cover of a few tens of feet of sand and clayey sand of Quaternary age. \r\n\r\nTensional stresses during the structural evolution of the Ocala Uplift produced an intersecting system of fractures and normal faults in rocks of the Florida Aquifer. The fractures and faults are important controls for orientation of solution channels, and, therefore, for development of ground-water circulation patterns. When the system of surface streams which once drained the Barge Canal area eroded the poorly permeable Miocene-Pliocene(?) cover from the flanks of the Ocala Uplift, surface runoff was reduced and precipitation began to directly infiltrate the underlying limestones. Now only principal rivers, such as the Oklawaha and Withlacoochee Rivers, and a few short tributaries remain, while one of the most highly developed subsurface drainage systems in the world has evolved in the cavernous limestones of the Floridan aquifer. This prospect drilling was undertaken to gather data on the thickness, quality, and extent of lignite beds and the lithologic characteristics of the rocks in the Sentinel Butte and Tongue River Members of the Fort Union Formation. This information is in support of geologic mapping and as part of a program of mineral land classification. A preliminary lithologic description of the cores, drill samples, and chemical analyses of the lignite beds sampled in each hole, drill samples, and chemical analyses of the lignite beds sampled in each hole are given.</p><p>Partial core and drill samples of the 19 holes drilled may be inspected at the North Dakota Geological Survey, Grand Forks, N. The vast size of Alaska, its great ranges of physiography, and the lack of data for much of the State precluded a comprehensive analysis of all flood determinants. Peak stream discharges, where gaging-station records were available, were analyzed for 2-year, 5-year, 10-year, 25-year, and 50-year average-recurrence intervals. A regional analysis of the flood characteristics by multiple-regression methods gave a set of equations that can be used to estimate floods of selected recurrence intervals up to 50 years for any site on any stream in Alaska. The equations relate floods to drainage-basin characteristics. The study indicates that in Alaska the 50-year flood can be estimated from 10-year gaging- station records with a standard error of 22 percent whereas the 50-year flood can be estimated from the regression equation with a standard error of 53 percent. Also, maximum known floods at more than 500 gaging stations and miscellaneous sites in Alaska were related to drainage-area size. Reservoir will b.e impounded on moderately fertile soils; however, its water source, Bald Eagle Creek, is a bicarbonate-water stream that is over~y-enriched with nutrients. About 650 of the 1,730 acres to be inundated in summer are subject to infestation with aquatic weeds. Nuisance algal \"blooms\" are expected to occur in summer. The reservoir will stratify in early summer and water · releas·ed for conservation purposes and acid neutralization will consist mostly of hypolimnetic water. Because of its anticipated use in analog or digital hydrologic models, agricultural pumpage is estimated for unit areas.</p><p>Estimated municipal pumpage is based on census figures and population projections and on pumpage reported by organizations in the San Joaquin Valley supplying water to communities. On the average, 0.25 to 0.40 acre- foot of water is used annually per capita, depending upon the population and number of industries in the community. Disseminated magnetite and locally massive lenses, veins, and breccia fillings of magnetite were encountered along most of this length, but more consistently between the depths of 82 and 435 meters. The average iron content of this section in the form of magnetite was 16.4 percent. Several sections, each about 20 meters in length, contained from 22.4 to 31 percent iron.&nbsp;</p><p>Extrapolation of costs from current taconite iron ore operations in the United States, beneficiating ores averaging 23 percent iron, suggests that ore of similar or possibly lower iron content from Jabal Ideas could be mined and processed at comparable if not at somewhat lower costs. The beneficiation product, containing about 64 percent iron, would have a current value of $16.00 per long ton at the point of use. On the basis of information presently available there is a reasonable expectation that reserves of the order of 75 to 125 million tons could be developed at Jabal Ideas to sustain a similar operation.&nbsp;</p><p>Tin, not previously reported from this district, was found in the cores in small but widely distributed amounts averaging perhaps .01 percent. Although the amount is anomalous it is probably not of economic significance in the magnetite area, but one should not at this stage discount the possibility of finding higher concentrations of tin elsewhere in the district.</p><p>The origin of the magnetite in this geologic setting is attributed largely to the uralitization of high-iron pyroxene.
