Thin surficial deposits of white silica sand occupy much of the flat coastal area of Liberia from Monrovia to Buchanan 100 km southeast; most of the sand is of good quality for glass manufacture. A lagoonal mode of origin is suggested for these essentially monomineralic deposits. Based on the average thickness of one meter and a conservative bulk density of 1.6, the easily accessible deposts along the Freeway, the Kakata highway, and the Schieffelin road cover about 68 square kilometers and contain at least 109 million metric tons of silica sand.

Major factors that influence evaluation of the above considerations are the elevations and characteristics of floods. Heretofore, such flood data for the Applegate River have been inadequate to evaluate the flood potential or to use as a basis for delineating reasonable land-use zones. Therefore, at the request of Jackson County, this study was made to provide flood elevations, water-surface profiles, and channel characteristics (geometry and slope) for a reach of the Applegate River from the Jackson-Josephine County line upstream to the Applegate damsite (fig. 1). A similar study was previously made for reaches of adjacent Rogue River and Elk Creek (Harris, 1970).

Glen Ullin, a small agricultural community on the Northern Pacific Railroad, about 52 miles west of Bismarck, is near the center of the quadrangle (fig. 1).
The Glen Ullin quadrangle is one of a group of 14 adjoining 71/2-minute quadrangles (fig. 1) that are being mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey to furnish a basis for classification of lands withdrawn by the Federal Government pending classification for coal and to contribute to the geologic map atlas of the United States. Most of the fieldwork for the Glen Ullin quadrangle was done during the late summers and early falls of 1964 and 1965.
During the summer of 1966 the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a drilling program in the Glen Ullin and nearby quadrangles (Smith, 1970) to gather information on the existence, thickness, and depth of lignite beds in withdrawn Federal lands. Three of the holes drilled are in the Glen Ullin quadrangle.

R. Mabey and F. Keller to delineate the source of the aeromagnetic total-intensity anomaly that was interpreted as being the expression of a commercial magnetite deposit.
Results of the investigation indicate that a zone of magnetite more than 1700 meters in length lies beneath southward protruding ridges and the adjoining margin of a wadi in the central part of the area; and that a small zone of less economic importance occurs beneath a low ridge to the east. Within these zones, the magnetite probably occurs as lenticular masses, stringers, and veins, which aggregate in substantial quantities that constitute the richer parts and are marked by magnetic anomalies.
The main zone is inferred to be the source of the total -intensity anomaly and is several hundred meters longer than is indicated by the wide-spaced aeromagnetic profiles. This zone averages about 75 meters in width. It may contain as much as 50 percent magnetite, however an estimate of the tonnage represented cannot be made reliably without more complete subsurface information.
A study of drilling sites in the area reveals that most of the holes are along the south edge of the main zone and were not properly located to test the richer parts as indicated by our magnetic data.
Drill hole N 40, which was abandoned in November owing to broken drilling equipment, is properly located to test the richest part of the main magnetite-bearing zone. We recommended that this hole be completed and that the resulting subsurface information be used as a guide in selecting additional drilling sites along the trend of the anomaly.

When properly impacted against a stiff material the device measures the amount of rebound of a spring-loaded hammer, with the rebound of the hammer being directly proportional to the strength of the material tested. Application of this instrument to rock, specifically water-saturated zeolitized tuff, is demonstrated through a set of correlation diagrams that relate Schmidt hammer rebound values, obtained from core samples and from the sites where samples were taken, to physical properties measured on rock samples in the laboratory. The properties include compressive strength, compressional and shear velocities, and dynamic and static Young's shear and bulk moduli. The correlation diagrams apply only to zeolitized tuff of the type found at the Nevada Test Site in its natural state (freshly excavated). These diagrams enable the user of the L-type Schmidt hammer to immediately obtain values of physical properties of such rocks in place, a convenience desirable where conventional sampling is not feasible or is impossible, and when results are required on short notice. The charts apply to L-type hammers that are calibrated to a nominal rebound value of 74. Calibration is made on a 35-pound-(16-kg-) test anvil with a steel-hardened test surface of Brinell hardness = 500 kg/mm2.
