The results include the determination of elements by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis, phosphate by X-ray fluorescence, carbon dioxide by acid decomposable carbonate, total carbon by induction furnace, carbonate carbon by conversion using the conversion factor of 0.2727 for amount of carbon in carbon dioxide, and organic carbon by difference. \r\n\r\nA seven- cycle semilogarithmic chart presents the data graphically and illustrates the range, mode, and mean for some of the elements. The chart shows, also, the approximate concentration of the same elements in rocks similar to the black shale and limestone of the Shublik Formation. \r\n\r\nEach sample represents 5 feet of section and is composed of rock chips taken at 1 - foot intervals. The samples are keyed into a stratigraphic column of the formation. \r\n\r\nRocks of the Shublik Formation contain anomalously high concentrations of some of the elements. These same elements might be expected to be high in some of the petroleum from northern Alaska if the Shublik Formation is a source for this petroleum. By design the instrument detected fluorescence specifically at the sodium D2 Fraunhofer line (5890 angstroms). The granules are used as a vehicle for airborne emplacement of poison to control fire ants in the eastern and southeastern United States. The granules are dropped with considerable precision but some targets are inevitably missed. It was hoped that the FLD could aid in detecting missed target areas. Test results showed that the granules are detectable by FLD but that the concentration must be too great to be practical with the present FLD. These deposits overlie the probable extensions of the main veins as them are projected northward from the central part of the district. The anomalous area is underlain by the Jefferson Formation, which is the most favorable host rock for mineral deposits in the district, and by quartz diorite and granodiorite of the Gilmore stock. Target areas in the scene were selected for training the computer. Statistical parameters of radiance such as mean, standard deviation, divergence, and covariance were computed for each category of material. These data were used in the computer program to determine which channels are most useful for recognition of all object categories studied, and to actually classify all the unknown data points into the known categories.</p><p>The following terrain types have been mapped with greater than 80 percent accuracy in a 12-square-mile area with 1,800 feet of relief: bedrock exposures, talus, vegetated rock rubble, glacial kame terrace, glacial till, forest, bog, and water, and shadows. In addition, shadows of clouds and cliffs are depicted.</p><p>In addition, studies were made of the effectiveness of the proposed Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) data channels as compared to the computer-selected best four channels in the automatic recognition and mapping of the same terrain types based on simulations, using the same set of data.</p><p>These simulations resulted in maps whose accuracies were only a few percent less than that using the best set of four channels; they indicate that the ERTS data channels are likely to be successful for terrain analysis of a wide variety of categories encompassing a broad range of spectral reflectance.</p><p>These studies also indicate that, for a broad range of terrain categories, many' combinations of 3 or 11 channels of data would be satisfactory. The basic steps in the evaluation procedure were (1) definition of the long-term goals of the streamflow data program in quantitative form, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, and (3) consideration of alternate programs and techniques to meet the remaining objectives. None of the goals could be met by generalization of the data for gaged basins by regression analysis. This fact indicates that significant changes should be made in the present data program to obtain better areal coverage to achieve the goals set. A streamflow data program based on the guidelines developed in this study is proposed for the future.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Depth intervals tested and sampled were: zone 1, 1,710 feet to total depth; zone 2, 1,508 to 1,706 feet; zone 3, 1,266 to 1,464 feet; zone 4, 788 to 986 feet; and zone 5, 400 to 598 feet.&nbsp;</p><p>Injection and recovery tests were run on each depth interval. Relative specific capacities calculated from injection data were much smaller than those calculated from recovery data. More mud and lost circulation material in the hole and in the formation during the injection test account for the different relative specific capacities.&nbsp;</p><p>Comparative composite hydrostatic heads before and after the injection and recovery tests were 211.5 feet below lsd (land-surface datum) and 218.0 feet below lsd. The difference may be due to differences in the conditions of the measurements.&nbsp;</p><p>Of the five zones tested, only zone 5 did not have at least partial communication around the bottom The basic steps in the evaluation procedure were (1) definition of the long-terms goals of the streamflow-data program in quantitative form, (2) examination and analysis of streamflow data to determine which goals have been met, and (3) consideration of alternate programs and techniques to meet the remaining goals.\r\nThe study defines the individual relation between certain statistical streamflow characteristics and selected basin parameters. This relation is a multiple regression equation that could be used on a statewide basis to compute a selected natural-flow characteristic at any site on a stream. The study shows that several streamflow characteristics can be estimated within an accuracy equivalent to 10 years of record by use of a regression related to at least three climatic or basin parameters for any basin of 50 square miles or more.\r\n\r\nThe study indicates that significant changes in the scope and character of the data-collection program would enhance the possibility of attaining the remaining goals. These are locally mantled by extensive late Tertiary and Quaternary fluvial gravels. The southern boundary of the Log Cabin batholith lies within the area studied. A detailed chronology of polyphase deformation, metamorphism and plutonism has been established. Early isoclinal folding (F1) was followed by a major period of plastic deformation (F2), sillimanite-microcline grade regional metamorphism, migmatization and synkinematic Boulder Creek granodiorite plutonism (1.7 b.y.). Macroscopic doubly plunging antiformal and synformal structures were developed. P-T conditions at the peak of metamorphism were probably about 670?C and 4.5 Kb. Water pressures may locally have differed from load pressures. \r\n\r\nThe 1.4 b.y. Silver Plume granite plutonism was post kinematic and on the basis of petrographic and field criteria can be divided into three facies. Emplacement was by forcible injection and assimilation. Microscopic and mesoscopic folds which postdate the formation of the characteristic mineral phases during the 1.7 b.y. metamorphism are correlated with the emplacement of the Silver Plume Log Cabin batholith. Extensive retrograde metamorphism was associated with this event. \r\n\r\nA major period of mylonitization postdates Silver Plume plutonism and produced large E-W and NE trending shear zones. A detailed study of the Rb/Sr isotope geochemistry of the layered mylonites demonstrated that the mylonitization and associated re- crystallization homogenized the Rb87/Sr 86 ratios. Whole-rock dating techniques applied to the layered mylonites indicate a probable age of 1.2 b.y. Petrographic studies suggest that the mylonitization-recrystallization process produced hornfels facies assemblages in the adjacent metasediments. \r\n\r\nMinor Laramide faulting, mineralization and igneous activity occurred within this area.
