The basic elements in the evaluation procedure were (1) establishment of objectives and goals of the program, (2) examination and analysis of all available data to determine which goals have already been met, (3) consideration of alternate methods of meeting the remaining goals, and (4) identification of elements that should be included in the future program.</p><p>Four categories of data form the framework of program design. They are: current-purpose data, planning and design data, data to define long-term trends, and stream environment data. An accuracy goal for planning and design data of an equivalent of 25 years of record was specified for principal streams and an equivalent of 10 years of record was specified for minor streams. It was found that many of the goals could be met by generalizing data for gaged basins by regression analysis. Appropriate changes could be made in the present data program based on this fact.</p><p>A streamflow data program based on the guidelines developed in this study is proposed for the future. The samples were collected in 1969 as part of the Heavy Metals Program of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The most comprehensive discussion of the geology of the study area is a report by A. F. Buddington and Theodore Chapin (1929). Known metalliferous lodes of the area are described and additional references to specific areas are given by Berg and Cobb (1967). Additional data is given in reports by Herbert and Race (1964) and Alaska Department of Mines (1950). The samples were collected in 1969 as part of the Heavy Metals Program of the U.S. Geological Survey.</p><p>The most comprehensive discussion of the geology of the study area is a report by A. F. Buddington and Theodore Chapin (1929). Known metalliferous lodes of the area are described and additional references to specific areas are given by Berg and Cobb (1967). Additional data is given in reports by Condon (1961), Smith (1914), and Wright and Wright (1908). This is about 40 percent of the number of tremors recorded by the network in 1967. In 1968 a total of 281 tremors were of sufficient magnitude to be located accurately--about 50 percent of the number of tremors in 1967 that were located accurately. \r\n\r\nAs in previous years, nearly all the earth tremors originated near, or within a few thousand feet of, the mine workings. This distribution indicates that mine-induced stress changes caused most of the seismic activity. However, over periods of weeks and months there were significant changes in the distribution of seismic activity caused by tremors that were not directly related to mining but probably were caused by adjustment of natural stresses 6r by a complex combination of both natural and mine-induced stress changes. \r\n\r\nIn 1968 the distribution of tremor hypocenters varied considerably with time, relative to active mining areas and to faults present in the mine workings. During the first 6 months, most tremors originated along or near faults that trend close to or through the active mine workings. However, in the last 6 months, the tremor hypocenters tended to concentrate in the rock mass closer to, or around, the active mining areas. This shift in concentration of seismic activity with time has been noted throughout the district many times since recording began in 1963, and is apparently caused by spontaneous releases of stored strain energy resulting from mine-induced stress changes. This report provides these data in the form of flood-peak records, gaging-station records, frequency curves, and flood profiles. Information is provided for 253 miles of streams from near Boone on the main stem to the Iowa-Minnesota state line on the East and West Forks of the Des Moines River.</p>\n<p>Flood profiles on the main stem include those for the notable flood of 1954, the lesser flood of 1947, and the computed 25- and 50-year floods. On the West Fork, profiles are shown for the outstanding flood of April 1969; lesser floods in April 1965, July 1964, and September 1964; and the computed 25- and 50-year floods. On the East Fork, profiles are shown for the April 1965 flood from the mouth to Algona and for the April 1969 flood from Algona to Tuttle Lake; for a lesser flood in October 1968; and for the computed 25- and 50-year floods. Low-water profiles are shown for all reaches.</p>\n<p>Tabulations of flood stages and discharges at gaging stations contained in this report can be used for volumetric studies.
