Circular to elliptical anomalies are attributed to younger intrusive or less commonly older masses, stocks, and plugs of granitic rocks. The linear anomalies may be expressions of faults, lineation trends, or dike swarms. In the summer of 1967 morphological, sedimentological, and seismic refraction studies were made on an arctic beach near Nome, Alaska, in order to better define these distinguishing characteristics.</p><p>Several distinct microrelief structures are developed during ice break-up and the melting of ice and snow on the beaches including ice-pushed ridges, kaimoo ridge and deposits, sea-ice kettles, sea- ice sand and sea-ice gravel cones, micro-outwash deposits, and microdeltaic deposits.</p><p>Sedimentological studies showed that sediment distribution along the beach is random with no increasing or decreasing median diameters, or sorting coefficients, or sand-gravel percentages, either along the strandline or along the beach profile. This random grain size distribution is attributed to the relatively low energy along the coast of the Seward Peninsula. Further, the beaches are insulated from the elements by ice for about 6 months out of the year and the beach sediments are disturbed annually by ice-push. Longshore drift appeared to vary from east to west during the summer of 1967 with a net transport to the east.</p><p>The seismic refraction study on the Nome beach indicated that internal stratigraphy of the overburden could be interpreted and correlated with known onshore and offshore stratigraphic units. The rains, flash floods, and rain-induced landslides accompanying the storm's passage have been called the worst natural disaster ever to strike Virginia.</p><p>Discharge of streams in the James, Potomac, Rappahapnock, and York River basins exceeded previous known maximums. At Tye River near Lovingston the peak flood discharge was eight times the previous high during the 31 years of record. James River stations downstream from the Maury River recorded peak flows of greater than 100-year recurrence interval.</p><p>As of Nov. 13, 1969, the State had counted 113 dead and 102 injured with 39 persons still missing. The total damage amounted to over $116 million.</p><p>This report provides hydrologic data needed for planning and design. The report includes a general description of the flood; precipitation information; sediment aspects of the flood; and records of stage and/or discharge for 105 sites. In this report most of the emphasis is placed on the map distribution of these materials and on a description of their physical properties. Much of the information presented on the geologic map in the form of abbreviated columnar sections is from water-well and exploration drill holes; the remainder is from foundation excavations and natural rock outcrops. A brief description of the composition and thickness of each map unit is given in the Explanation.</p><p>The generalized statements that follow, regarding the engineering properties of the map units, are based on field observations and on general performance information obtained from local engineers, contractors, builders, and property owners. It is hoped that this information, used in conjunction with the geologic map and cross sections, will be helpful to land-use planners and developers, engineers, public officials, and others in making preliminary plans and designs. Attention was first focused on this region in the early 1950's, after oil and gas were discovered in the Cretaceous of the North Slope by the U.S. Navy. The presence of similar Cretaceous strata in the Yukon-Koyukuk province and the possibility that some of the broad alluviated lowlands within the province might be underlain by Tertiary basins were pointed out by Gryc and others (1951) and Payne (1955). Between 1954 and 1961 large parts of the province were reconnoitered by oil company surface parties and a small amount of geophysical work was carried out in the Nulato-Kateel and Bethel areas. The explorational activity culminated in 1960-61 with the drilling of two deep tests, a 12,000-foot hole near Nulato on the Yukon River and a 15,000-foot hole at Napatuk Creek in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Coastal Lowland. Apparently neither test revealed oil shows or favorable reservoir rocks, as exploration and leasing activity in the province declined sharply thereafter.</p><p>Since 1954 the U.S. Geological Survey has maintained a modest but continuing program of reconnaissance geologic mapping of the province and its borderlands. Nearly all parts of this vast area have been visited either by helicopter or river boat. Although information in many places is still sketchy, the broad outlines of the surface geology are now known. Subsurface data, however, are almost totally lacking.</p><p>The mapping indicates that the petroleum possibilities over most of the province are limited because of complex structure and scarcity of promising reservoir rocks. The chief purpose of the study was to appraise the potential geologic hazards at the site of a hydroelectric project under consideration by the Cowlitz County Public Utility District. It is concluded that if future eruptions of Mount St. Helens are like those of the recent geologic past, the principal hazards near the project site probably will be from nuees ardentes, mudflows, floods, and lava flows. If the volcano should erupt after the hydroelectric facility is constructed, it is recommended that the reservoir be emptied as quickly as possible, and that persons be evacuated from the valley The events were at different azimuths and distances from LASA. Apparent-velocity measurements using arrival-time data at the subarrays differed by about 30 percent for events in the northwest and southeast directions.Apparent velocities were high near the center of the array for events in the northwest and low for events in the southeast. For events in the other azimuths, the patterns were more complex, but anomalous values were found near the center. Apparent-velocity measurements at subarrays were made using a cross-spectral technique. The resulting values showed patterns similar to those obtained using arrival-time data near the center.
