The second covered a reach of the Schuylkill River from Conshohocken to Philadelphia. The third was for the Delaware River in the vicinity of Belvidere, New Jersey. The first and third reports were written by George M. Farlekas of the Trenton district, and the second was written by Arthur T. Alter of the Harrisburg district. Specific information as to the areal extent and contents of these studies can be obtained from the Delaware River Basin Commission, P.O. Box 360, Trenton, New Jersey.
This flood inundation study is part of an investigative program financed through a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Delaware River Basin Commission. The report was prepared under the direction of Norman H. Beamer, District, Chief, U.S. Geological Survey, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The streamflow data for Perkiomen Creek at Graterford were collected by the Pennsylvania Department of Forests and Waters from 1914 to 1931. Since 1931 the data have been collected under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Department of Forests and Waters. Data on high-water marks and areas inundated in past periods of flooding have been obtained from many local residents of Montgomery County. Dips in the Paynesville Sandstone define a structural basin centered south of Roberts International Airport (formerly called Roberts Field) about 25 miles east of Monrovla. Wackes and conglomerates of Cretaceous age, herein named the Farmington River Formation, unconformably overlie the Paynesville Sandstone and constitute the sedimentary fill in the Roberts basin.\r\n\r\nThe Bassa basin lies to the southeast of the Roberts basin and is separated from it by an upwarp of crystalline rocks. The basin is occupied by wackes and conglomerates of the Farmington River Formation, which apparently lie directly on the crystalline basement. Both basins are bounded on the northeast by northwest-trending dip-slip faults. \r\n\r\nThe best potential for petroleum deposits that exists in Liberia is beneath the adjacent continental shelf and slope. Rocks that range from Mississippian to Permian in age are widespread; they are represented by the White Knob Limestone in the eastern part of the quadrangle and the Copper Basin Formation in the western part. The Copper Basin Formation, which is composed of non-carbonate detrital rocks, is interlayered with the White Knob Limestone near the middle of the quadrangle. This interlayering is herein interpreted to be the result of depositional interbedding, but it could be in part due to juxtaposition by faulting. The Challis Volcanics, of Tertiary age, cover much of the quadrangle, and except for a conspicuous basal conglomerate, lack distinctive subdivisions similar to those in neighboring areas. Alluvial deposits which may be in part as old as Pliocene are scattered through the quadrangle. Glaciation affected all higher parts of the quadrangle, and locally glacial deposits of at least three ages can be distinguished The latest two of these are probably of late Wisconsin Bull Lake and Pinedale ages. Basalt flows of probable Recent age extend into the southernmost part of the quadrangle and originate in part from vents there. \r\n\r\nIntrusive rocks, including plutons and related dikes of Tertiary age, are scattered throughout the quadrangle. They range from granite to quartz diorite in composition. The intrusive rocks seem to be related to the Challis Volcanics. \r\n\r\nThe rocks of the quadrangle were strongly deformed and eroded prior to the deposition of the Challis Volcanics. No thrust faults have been recognized although such faults are plentiful in the adjacent region. Deformation has continued until recent times. \r\n\r\nAll or parts of five mining districts are included in the quadrangle, and the total production probably exceeded $10,000,000. Mining has been quiet since World War II but activity has been renewed at times in the past and possibilities for the discovery of substantial new deposits seem promising. The mineral deposits formed largely by replacement, partly in areas of contact metamorphism. The metals present are varied but copper has been the main product.
