In the Mississippi River, nutrient concentrations were greater downstream of the Minnesota River and major wastewater discharge points in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area (TCMA). Stream loads of nutrients (the amount of the constituent carried past a point on a stream during a given period of time) also increased downstream of the Minnesota River and major wastewater discharge Ground-water irrigation expanded rapidly after 1940 in the area underlain by the High Plains aquifer (called the 'High Plains region' in this report): 1949--2.1 million acres; 1959--6.1 million acres; 1969--9.0 million acres; 1978--12.9 million acres; and 1980--13.7 million acres (Gutentag and others, 1984; Thelin and Heimes, 1987). In 1990, 95 percent of the water withdrawn from the High Plains aquifer, 15.7 million acre-feet, was used for irrigation (Marilee Horn, U.S. Geological Survey, written commun., 1996). \r\n\r\nWater-level declines appeared in the High Plains aquifer soon after extensive ground-water irrigation development began. By 1980, water levels in the High Plains aquifer in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and southwestern Kansas had declined more than 100 feet. In response to these declines, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with numerous Federal, State, and local water-resource agencies, began a ground-water monitoring program in 1988 to assess water-level change in the aquifer annually, using water-level measurements in more than 7,000 wells. Geological Survey Bureau: the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory; and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have been working together to address this question. As part of the Iowa Ground-Water Monitoring Program (IGWM). water samples have been collected from selected Iowa municipal wells since 1982. An examination of this data identified two trends: (1) concentrations of atrazine in Iowa's ground water generally were decreasing over time, and (2) concentrations of metolachlor generally were increasing. Continuing ground-water sampling can determine if these trends represent long-term changes in chemical concentrations.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological A few examples of these are to establish load reduction goals, to estimate the relative magnitude of nonpoint sources compared to point sources, and to estimate phosphorus loads to lakes. Solids and phosphorus are two of the most common nonpoint contaminants resulting from agricultural activity. Loads can be estimated either by monitoring the water quantity and water quality in a watershed or by modeling those same factors. Monitoring is the most accurate method for load estimation, but it is also time consuming and expensive. A simple method of estimating loads of chemical constituents or suspended solids in a watershed is to use unit-area loads that have been calculated from monitored data to estimate loads in watersheds where monitoring data are not available. A \"unit-area load\" is defined as the mass of a particular constituent transported by a stream, divided by the drainage area of the watershed.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological S. Geological Survey (USGS) tested walleye and other sport fish from the upper Columbia River and Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake (Lake Roosevelt), the largest reservoir in Washington and a popular fishing spot.<br><br>Findings:<br></p><ul><li>Walleye had higher concentrations of mercury than other sport fish.<br></li><li>Larger walleye had higher mercury concentrations than smaller walleye.<br></li><li>Mercury concentrations in walleye fillets ranged from 0.11 to 0.44 parts per million (ppm). Four such petroleum assessments have been published in recent years (Masters and others, 1984, 1987, 1991, and 1994). A summary of these assessments (table 1) indicates the magnitude of world conventional oil and gas resources, as perceived in the 1980s and 1990s by the USGS.</p><p>These four successive world petroleum assessments evidence changes in perception through time. The assessments were prepared using a consistent methodology by the same core group of geologists. Because of this continuity, differences among the four assessments can be largely attributed to an evolving understanding of world recoverable oil and gas resources rather than to procedural or philosophical changes. Wisconsin farmers applied 7.6 million pounds of corn herbicides during 1996. Because of public concern about the amount of herbicides applied to Wisconsin farm fields and the impact on surrounding watersheds, a study was conducted to measure herbicide runoff in sections of two rivers in southwestern Wisconsin. This is a cooperative project between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP).</span></p>\n<p>Prior to this study, surface-water samples had not been collected frequently enough to calculate herbicide loads for entire watersheds in southwestern and south-central Wisconsin. This fact sheet summarizes herbicide concentrations in samples collected from the Pecatonica River at Martintown and the Yahara River near Fulton from May 15 to July 15, 1996. Herbicide loads and unit area loads are calculated for these two watersheds.</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>This study monitored commonly applied corn herbicides: alachlor, atrazine, metolachlor, cyanazine, and acetochlor. Some trace elements in coal are naturally radioactive. These radioactive elements include uranium (U), thorium (Th), and their numerous decay products, including radium (Ra) and radon (Rn). Although these elements are less chemically toxic than other coal constituents such as arsenic, selenium, or mercury, questions have been raised concerning possible risk from radiation. All rural supplies are from ground water; approximately 65,000 residents used ground water for their domestic water supplies in 1990.</p><p>The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Guilford County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Guilford County Department of Health, began a study in 1996 of the hydrogeology of Guilford County to update previous work. As part of this effort and according to methods presented in Koterba and others (1995), dissolved radon samples were collected from 70 wells throughout the county.
