Chart 8530, and over 750 km of additional sounding lines made in 1965 and in 1968. Continuous reflection seismic records made along the same tracks as the bathymetric profiles served as the basis for the Isopach map. For the determination of sediment thicknesses a sound velocity in sediment of 1.5 km/sec was used. No two sites are identical; the geology of each should be considered in the interpretation of returned lunar samples and observations. Geologic maps of each site have been prepared at scales of 1:5,000, 1:25,000, and 1:100,000.</p><p>Features emphasized on the 1:5,000-scale maps are common to all the sites and include mainly the widespread lunar regolith and small craters of varied age and origin. Because they cover the lunar surface and because mobility will be limited on early missions, these ubiquitous features will be the main objects of scientific inquiry during the first manned landings.</p><p>Regional geologic differences among the sites are more apparent on the 1:25,000- and 1:100,000-scale maps. Mare materials in sites 2 and 3 belong mainly to the Imbrian System; the materials in site 3 appear to be younger than those in site 2. Mare materials in sites 4 and 5 belong entirely to the Eratosthenian System. Most materials in site 1 have been assigned to the Copernican System. They consist of a young mantle of relatively low-cohesion material that covers an older cratered terrain, probably part of the terrae. Typical mare material occurs only in the eastern extremity of site 1. Representatives of both Eurasiatic and American cratonic microfaunas permit correlation with the original Carboniferous type sections in western Europe as well as with the standard Mississippian and Pennsylvanian sequences in the Midcontinent region of North America. The intervening mountainous areas are underlain by consolidated sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, mainly of Mesozoic age. These older rocks contain only small quantities of recoverable ground water and, therefore, are not considered a major source of ground water.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>In the Central Coastal Subregion, 24 basins have been identified as significant sources of ground water. The total area of the 24 basins is about 3,500 square miles. The water-bearing deposits range in thickness from about 200 to 4,000 feet. Depending on local conditions, recharge infiltrates at rates of less than 1½ feet per day to more than 10 feet per day in the upper part of alluvial fans and stream channels and at the outcrops of the deeper aquifers. The maximum measured depth to water in the water-bearing deposits is 568 ft. In several valleys there are flowing wells. </p>\n<br/>\n<p>Total storage capacity of 16 of the basins is more than 20,000,000 acre-feet . The usable storage capacity of 18 of the basins is more than 7,600,000 acre-feet; the limiting factors are sea-water intrusion and high pumping lift. Ground-water temperature ranges from about 55° to about 75°F . The dissolved-solids content of the water is generally less than 800 parts per million, but locally is more than 11,000 parts per million. Two of the three principal tangents of the crossing will include bridges that will span the main channel and an overflow channel of the river, as shown in figure 1, page 3. The Oregon State Highway Department wants to know what flow will result when the water-surface elevation upstream from the bridges is 100.0 feet (mean-sea-level datum). This design elevation will be referred to as Condition 1 in this report. Also required in Condition 1 is how much backwater is represented in the 100-foot elevation and how often did this flow occur before the river became regulated in 1941.</p>\n<p>The Highway Department also wants to know what flow could be expected from a flood event equal to that of December 1964, but regulated by three additional reservoirs that have been completed since 1964. This design discharge will be referred to as Condition 2 in this report. This information is a useful tool in making land-use and development decisions.</p><p>The Guayanilla and Yauco basins lie in the southwestern part of Puerto Rico. The streams flow southward from the rugged Cordillera Central and empty into Bahia de Guayanilla. The lower basins are devoted principally to the production of sugarcane and are subject to destructive floods. Details pertaining to basin features, flood frequency, flood profiles, and inundated areas are discussed by individual basins.
