The location was determined during a brief preliminary study of the Depot's water supply which is summarized in a report transmitted to the Depot in April of 1968, and the Geological Survey's suggestions for construction and testing are contained in the specifications written by the Post Engineer at the Depot as part of the well-drilling contract. This report presents tables of suspended-sediment data collected from 1956 to 1967 at 10 sites in the Umpqua River basin. Computations based on these data indicate that average annual suspended-sediment yields at these sites range from 137 to 822 tons per square mile. Because available data for the Umpqua River basin are generally inadequate for accurate determinations of sediment yield and for the definition of characteristics of fluvial sediments, recommendations are made for the collection and analysis of additional sediment data.

(See index map, fig. 1). The purpose of the investigation is to provide information for planning and implementing improved water-development and management practices. The major water problems in the San Luis Valley include (1) waterlogging, (2) waste of water by nonbeneficial evapotranspiration, (3) deterioration of ground-water chemical quality, and (4) failure of Colorado to deliver water to New Mexico and Texas in accordance with the Rio Grande Compact. This report describes the hydrologic environment, extent of water-resource development, and some of the problems related to that development. Information presented is based on data collected from 1966 to 1968 and on previous studies. Subsequent reports are planned as the investigation progresses. The San Luis Valley extends about 100 miles from Poncha Pass near the northeast corner of Saguache County, Colo., to a point about 16 miles south of the Colorado-New Mexico State line. The total area is 3,125 square miles, of which about 3,000 are in Colorado. The valley is nearly flat except for the San Luis Hills and a few other small areas. The Colorado part of the San Luis Valley, which is described in this report, has an average altitude of about 7,700 feet. Bounding the valley on the west are the San Juan Mountains and on the east the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Most of the valley floor is bordered by alluvial fans deposited by streams originating in the mountains, the most extensive being the Rio Grande fan (see block diagram, fig. 2 in pocket). Most of the streamflow is derived from snowmelt from 4,700 square miles of watershed in the surrounding mountains. The northern half of the San Luis Valley is internally drained and is referred to as the closed basin. The lowest part of this area is known locally as the \"sump.\" The remainder of the valley is drained by the Rio Grande and its tributaries. The climate of the San Luis Valley is arid, and a successful agricultural economy would not be possible without irrigation. It is characterized by cold winters, moderate summers, and much sunshine. The average annual precipitation on the valley floor ranges from 7 to 10 inches. More than half the precipitation occurs from July to September. Moisture deficiency in the valley is shown by the graph comparing pan evaporation and precipitation {fig. 3}. For the years 1961-67 average pan evaporation for the period April through September was 52.25 inches, but average precipitation for the period was only 5.02 inches. Average annual precipitation was 7.8 inches. In 1950 the U. S. Soil Conservation Service began construction of floodwater-retarding structures in Texas under authorities granted by the Congress. These authorities provide, where economically feasible, that the program be applied to tributary watersheds of 240,000 acres or less. The usual practice has been to control flood runoff from approximately 50 percent of the watershed by a system of floodwater-retarding structures located on headwater subwatersheds of generally less than 10 square miles.

The U.S. Soil Conservation Service is actively engaged in the installation of flood and soil erosion reducing measures in Texas under the authority of \"The Flood Control Act of 1936 and 1944\" and \"Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act\" (Public Law 566), as amended. The Soil Conservation Service has found a total of 3,438 floodwater-retarding structures to be physically and economically feasible in Texas. As of September 30, 1967, 1,196 of these structures had been built.

Thirty-six resistivity soundings were made on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii to determine the applicability of galvanic resistivity methods for locating fresh-water aquifers in the State of Hawaii. Soundings were made on the northwestern part of the island of Oahu near the town of Waialua and on the island of Hawaii on the \"saddle\" area near Pohekuloa and the Humuula sheep station. On Oahu, the geoelectrical study indicates that correlation among four stratigraphic units underlain by a vesicular basalt basement is possible. The electrical soundings indicate that it is feasible to determine the approximate depth to the fresh-saline water interface within the basalt. Two Schlumberger soundings with electrode spacings, AB/2, reaching 6,000 feel give sounding curves of the maximum and minimum type whose terminal branches indicate that the true resistivity of basalts saturated with sea water, in the survey area on Oahu, is about 30-40 ohm-m. On the island of Hawaii, an exploratory well drilled in basalt to a depth of 1,001 feet proved to be dry. In the area of this well, two deep soundings were made using the Schlumberger and the equatorial arrays. Although additional soundings at various orientations and larger spacings are needed, there appears to be a conductive layer below 1,600 feet which may represent basalt saturated with fresh water.

In cooperation with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, the U.S. Geological Survey is making precise temperature measurements in exploratory boreholes at the Supplemental Test Site, central Nevada. Together with thermal properties measurements made on the core, and additional temperature measurements in progress these data will he used to estimate geothermal flu: from the area. The purpose of this interim report is to make our preliminary temperature measurements available to other interested groups.

The locations of the sites are shown on figure 1, and data pertinent to the state of disequilibrium at the time of measurement are tabulated in table 1. In the geothermal profiles (figs. 2 through 13) the temperature is given in decrees centigrade and the depth (Z) in meters.

Similarly altered water-washed tuff occurs as tongues in the uppermost part of this member, and forms most of the lower 400-600 feet of the overlying Evacuation Creek Member of the Green River Formation. \r\n\r\n'The altered ash-fall beds of the Parachute Creek Member are all thin and show a characteristic pattern of alteration. Most beds range in thickness from a fraction of an inch to a few inches. One bed reaches a maximum thickness of 5 feet, and, unlike the other beds, is composed of several successive ash falls. The pattern of alteration changes from the outer part to the center of the basin. Most beds in the outer part of the basin contain about 50 to 65 percent analcite,with the interstices between the crystals filled mainly by microlites of feldspar, opal, and quartz, and small amounts of carbonate. At the center of the basin .essentially all the beds -are composed of microlites of feldspar, opal, and quartz, and small amounts of carbonate. The tongues of water-washed tuff in the uppermost part of the Parachute Creek Member and the similar rocks composing the lower 400-600 feet of the Evacuation Creek Mewber are feldspathized rocks composed mainly of microlites of feldspar, opal, and quartz, varying amounts of carbonate, and in some specimens tiny subrounded crystals of analcite. \r\n\r\nThe general trend in alteration of the tuffaceous rocks from analcitization near the margin to feidspathization near the center of the Piceance Creek Basin is believed to have taken place at shallow depth during diagenesis , as indicated by field observations and laboratory work. The principal geologic units in the vicinity are volcanic rocks, which in places are highly permeable and poorly permeable lake sedimentary deposits, all probably post-Oligocene in age. Yields and specific capacities of wells in the unconfined water body within volcanic rocks and lake deposits range widely, but in general are low in the lake deposits and higher in the volcanic rocks. A confined water body occurring in volcanic rocks underlying the lake deposits yields large quantities of water to three wells in the study area. \r\n\r\nDissolved-solids content of ground water generally increases in proportion to the thickness of lake deposits penetrated and to proximity of the lake deposits. Water from wells drilled in the volcanic rocks several miles from the lake deposits and from wells penetrating the confined water body in volcanic rocks underlying the lake deposits contains small to moderate quantities of dissolved solids. \r\n\r\nGround-water supplies can be developed almost anywhere in the study area by drilling wells to depths below the water table. A reversed seismic-refraction profile extending northeastward from Greycliff, Montana, across the Large Aperture Seismic Array (LASA) to Charleson, North Dakota, indicates that the crust of the earth consists of two layers with P-wave velocities of 6.1 km/sec and 6.7 km/sec, and that the upper-mantle velocity is 8.3 km/sec. The Mohorovicic discontinuity is 50-km deep at Charleson and remains at nearly the same depth southwestward for a distance of about 300 km, from where it slopes upward to the southwest at about 2° to a depth of 41 km near Greycliff, Montana.
