This paper is divided into two parts. Part I presents a review of some of the past uses of aerial photography in urban areas. The empirical studies reviewed are divided into two broad categories depending on whether inventory compilation is by direct or indirect observation. Studies using inventory by direct observation are further divided into land-use studies and transportation studies. Part II identifies some problem areas for future research.

Sand was the dominant type of land-derived sediment deposited in the Sunnyside district during the regressive phases. Sand bodies prograded seaward in response to changing sediment supply from a source west of Sunnyside. Where conditions were favorable for the accumulation of vegetable material, peat deposits formed and were later changed to bituminous Coal by diagenesis. Studies of the coal bed show that the coals were formed from accumulation of small, low-growing plants and plant debris that was transported into the area of accumulation. Remains of large plants in the coals are rare. \r\n\r\nTrace fossils, which are tracks, trails and burrows formed by organisms and preserved in the rock, are extremely abundant in the Blackhawk rocks. These biogenic sedimentary structures are common in Cretaceous deposits throughout the western United States. Trace fossil distribution in the rocks is controlled by the depositional environment preferred by their creators. A study of the trace fossils of a. locality allows a more precise determination of the conditions during deposition of the sediments. Water depth, bottom conditions, salinity, current velocity and amount of suspended nutrients in the water are some of the environmental factors that may be reconstructed by studying trace fossils. \r\n\r\nThe Blackhawk Formation at Sunnyside comprises the members, the Kenilworth Member and the Sunnyside Member. Field studies show that the formation may be further subdivided in the Sunnyside district., according to the precepts of units of mappable thickness and similar lithologic characteristics. The Blackhawk pinches out eastward and north. ward into the Mancos Shale, and names for submembers become meaningless. Names are of value in the region of interest, however, because of the prominence of the named units. \r\n\r\nCoal mining is the main industry of the Book Cliffs region. Mines of the Sunnyside district are plagued by coal mine bumps, which are sudden, catastrophic releases of stress in the coal. Bumps cause loss of life, property age, and loss of profit to mining companies. Bumps occur when shear stress built up in the coal exceeds the shear Strength of the coal. Differential overburden pressure, faulting and tectonic activity, and lithology and structure of roof rocks are factors which influence bumps. Twenty-four of these pictures plus one from the Gemini III and four from the Gemini V mission were used to construct a 1:1,000,000-scale, black and white, semi-controlled mosaic. This mosaic covers about 150,000 square miles and extends along the 32d parallel of north latitude from the Pacific Ocean to the 100th meridian in west-central Texas, and averages about 150 miles in width. Many of the individual rectified photographs can be enlarged to a scale of 1:250,000 with little or no loss of resolution; such enlargements will be of great value to earth resources studies. If the angle of tilt is more than 35 degrees, some detail in the background of the photograph is lost. The U. S. Geological Survey is currently conducting several small research projects in which this 1:1,000,000-scale mosaic and the individual photographs are the prime research tools.

Regional stratigraphic studies have pointed out that there are only two recognizable major gross lithologic divisions. Because of this limitation, the term Longview, which has been used as a fossil zone, is abandoned; the term Kingsport is redefined to include the limestone and medium to coarsely crystalline dolomite unit, and Mascot is redefined to include the silty to very-finely crystalline dolomite unit from the top of the Kingsport to the unconformity at the top of the Knox Group.

determine clay amenability to bloating for the commercial production of light-weight aggregates. It has been established that such clays exist in at least three areas; reserves are sufficient in each area for 20 years or more of operation of a light-weight aggregate plant, if the plant were designed to produce 1,000 cubic yards of expanded material per day for 330 operating days per year. Reserves in any of the three areas can be expanded further or new deposits can be found by additional exploratory work.

As a matter of convenient geographical classification, the boundaries of the report area have been drawn along county lines, and to include San Benito and Santa Clara Counties on the west and Mariposa and Tuolumne Counties on the east. Therefore, this list of geological literature includes some publications on the Diablo and Temblor Ranges on the west, the Tehachapi Mountains and Mojave Desert on the south, and the Sierra Nevada Foothills and Mountains on the east.

Duryea underground nuclear explosion. The difference between the measured vertical displacement and the theoretically predicted vertical displacement caused by cavity formation is termed the residual vertical displacement. The residual vertical displacement is, therefore, assumed to be the result of faulting triggered by the explosion.

It was compiled primarily to provide information for those concerned with land use and development on or near these fault zones. The map shows the locations of all known or suspected fault traces formed by recent tectonic displacements of the ground surface along the Hayward and the southern part of the Calaveras fault zones. The displacements may have been due to violent rupture during earthquakes, to imperceptible movement not accompanied by felt earthquakes (slippage or \"creep\"), or to some combination of both.
