From this mapping it is inferred that the pyrite deposits occur along a sub-vertical, north-trending fault in andesite and other rocks at the crest line of an anticline in a roof pendant. The pendant is in a composite pluton formed by a per-alkalic magma series. Diorite and biotite granite are the most common and older members of the series. Pyroxene granite and quartz porphyry are less common younger rocks in the series. Extrusive equivalents of these plutonic rocks form dikes in the area. The pyrite is interpreted to have been deposited from hydrothermal solutions after diorite and biotite granite were consolidated and while pyroxene granite was being emplaced. Structures controlling the deposition of the pyrite are regional. Exploration at 1:2,500 scale by geologic, geochemical, and electro-magnetic methods are recommended. Diamond drilling should accompany the other exploration.</p><p>Chemical analyses of 22 specimens of Precambrian marble from the Asir quadrangle shows that seven deposits have a composition within the range of compositions of natural cement rocks used for Roman cement and quick-setting cement. None of the samples is rich enough in CaO for use as a raw material for Portland cement, and most samples of the marble have too much MgO for Portland cement.</p><p>Analyses of the major elements in 71 samples of lateritic material from the As Sarat mountains show that none of the laterite can be used as an ore for iron owing to too little iron and too much alumina, silica, and sulfur. One sample has the alumina-silica ratio of gibbsite or boehmite. One sample has alumina and sulfur in percentages suggesting the presence of alunite, and several other samples probably contain alunite. F. Shaffner in 1957. No part of the area appears to justify immediate further investigation. However, for long-range planning of mineral exploration three low-priority parts of the area can be recommended for future examination:(1) disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite east of As Subaykhah (19°07'N.x 43°24'E.); a chromite occurrence (19°13'N.x 43°28'E.) south of Jaash; and homatiticagglomarate (19°58'N.x 43°22'E.) near Bi'r Malah.</p><p>The most important mineral deposits known in the part of the Asir quadrangle east of the escarprent and north of latitude 18°N. are the gossan at Bi'r Idimah (18°30'N.x 44°10'E.) - Wadi Wassat, and the asbestos cast of Hamdah (19°02'N.x 43° 35'E.). The area drilled covers most of the Silent Canyon caldera and some of the surrounding area. The caldera is rudely elliptical in plan and measures 10 by 14 miles.</p><p>Except on its east edge, the caldera is completely obscured by younger volcanic rocks, including ash-flow sheets from several other centers. The structure, originally inferred from surface mapping and a 20-mgal gravity low, has been confirmed by drilling at 21 sites.</p><p>Petrographic, chemical, and magnetic studies of more than 4,000 feet of drill core have revealed a complex sequence of volcanic rocks. Precaldera rocks include thick talc-alkalic lavas and tuffs. Peralkaline lavas and tuffs of the Silent Canyon center include the Belted Range Tuff (13-14 m.y.), eruption of which resulted in caldera collapse. The Belted Range Tuff has been downdropped 5,000-7,000 feet in the caldera. Subsequently, the depression was partially filled in the eastern part by genetically related peralkaline lavas and tuffs and in the western part by later calc -alkaline lavas and tuffs apparently genetically unrelated to the peralkaline rocks of the Silent Canyon center. Renewed subsidence probably occurred during their eruption.</p><p>Isopach maps of younger tuffs show that the caldera was topographically low during deposition of later (12.5-7 m.y.) ash-flow sheets Most of these profiles were flown north and south at a barometric elevation of about 2,500 feet; some were flown north and south at 4,000 to 8,000 feet. All of these north-trending profiles are incorporated in this report. The flood release from these reservoirs is to be restricted so that flows will not exceed 6,000 cfs (cubic feet per second) in t he Merced River at the gaging station near Stevinson (about 5 miles upstream from the mouth). Computed floodwater profiles based on channel conditions in late 1967 and observed water-surface profiles for historic floods were used in the analysis. The conclusions reached are contingent on there being no levee failures during periods of high flow.</p>\n<p>Evaluation of historical flood records at gaging stations between Merced Falls and Stevinson indicates that a reduction in peak discharge occurs as the floods traverse the study reach. Reduction in peak discharge is dependent on river stage, prior river flows, magnitude of tributary inflow, bank storage and infiltration to the ground-water reservoir, and diversion for irrigation. For example, in late June 1967 a peak discharge of 9,860 cfs at Merced Falls was reduced by irrigation diversions to 6,850 cfs at a site 3 miles downstream and further reduced to 6,490 cfs at the gaging station near Stevinson.</p>\n<p>Backwater effect from high stages on t he San Joaquin River will increase stages on the Merced River and the effect may extend as far as 8 miles up stream from the junction of the two rivers. Backwater may cause some overbank flooding along the 8-mile reach when Merced River flows at Stevinson exceed 4,000 cfs . Most of the area subject to such inundation lies between levees that are a considerable distance--up to half a mile-- from the main channel . In the reach upstream from the backwater effect, a discharge of 4, 500 cfs near Stevinson will cause flooding at two locations, one of which is about 10 miles upstream an the other about 18.5 miles upstream from the confluence . When the discharge is 6,000 cfs , additional sites will be inundated, particularly the 20.5-mile reach of channel downstream from the Highway 99 crossing.</p>\n<p>A discharge of 6,000 cfs will pass through all bridge openings in the reach but overbank flooding may occur if debris should lodge against the bridge piers and significantly reduce the waterway area .</p>\n<p>Peak flows in Dry Creek, as measured 18.7 miles upstream from the mouth of Dry Creek, will be attenuated due to channel storage and will increase the discharge of the Merced River at Cressey by only about 50 per cent of t he Dry Creek peak discharge.
