At least 25 different minerals and industrial rocks occur in the area, but of these materials only asbestos seems to have a real possibility for industrial development. Twenty occurrences of asbestos were found around the Higera gold mine and between Hamdah and Bi'r El Marwahs A favorable area for asbestos exists north and east of Tathlith, but none was discovered there. It is recommended that the Hamdah-Bi'r El Marwah area be examined in detail, and the Higera and Tathlith areas receive reconnaissance studies for asbestos. Asbestos is a high-value commodity which can be processed by air separation, thereby freeing its benefitiation from dependence on water. Examination of the asbestos deposits would have as a by-product an appraisal of the resources of soapstone, anthophyllite, talc, vermiculite, chromite, calcite, gold, and copper in the three asbestos districts.</p><p>Thirty-six occurrences of marble were found in the area. Montro kyanite deposit, Grand Bassa County, Liberia","docAbstract":"<p>The Mt. Montro kyanite deposit, 14 miles north of Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, Liberia, is near the middle of a belt of kyanite-bearing gneisses and schists that is 9 miles long and 1 mile wide. The deposit, which seems to be the most persistent and the largest single body of kyanite rocks in the belt, is approximately 12, 600 feet long, as much as 480 feet in outcrop width, and from 25 to 350 feet thick. Kyanite-quartz-biotite-feldspar-garnet-muscovite gneiss, local interbeds of kyanite-mica schist, and lesser amounts of biotite-quartz gneiss, are the principal rocks in the deposit. Other rocks in the kyanite belt include garnet-biotite gneiss, undifferentiated quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, quartzite, and amphibolite. The rocks are the product of regional metamorphism to almandine amphibolite facies. The regional strike is northwest and dips are southwest.</p><p>Kyanite crystals are as much as 3 inches long. The kyanite content ranges from 5. 8 to 46. 7 percent, but most rocks contain between 10 and 35 percent. Garnetiferous beds contain as much as 15 percent red garnets that range to half an inch in diameter. In general, the garnet-rich beds are found in the upper part of the deposit.</p><p>he total reserves of the Mt. Montro kyanite deposit are estimated at about 10 million tons of kyanitic rock containing approximately 2.5 million tons of kyanite. These estimates include measured, indicated, and inferred reserves, calculated to depths of 25 to 100 feet, on the assumption that open-cut mining to those depths would be feasible. The largest part of the deposit underlies Mt. Montro and contains about 8 million tons of kyanitic rock containing nearly 1.9 million tons of kyanite. Residual soil overlying the deposit averages about 5 feet in thickness and is estimated to comprise slightly more than 400,000 cubic yards of material containing about 186,000 tons of kyanite.</p><p>The proximity of the kyanite deposit to a paved highway, to port facilities at Buchanan, and to water, electrical power, and timber resources are considered favorable factors relevant to possible development. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr68258","usgsCitation":"Stanin, S.A., and Cooper, B.R., 1968, The Mt. Total distance travelled was 6264 kilometers. Sixteen camps were set, and 483 samples of various geologic materials, principally wadi sands, laterite, and gossan, were taken. Not all the area originally scheduled to be covered was examined, owing principally to more time being spent on scheelite and laterite than originally planned. No work was done in the area covered by the two 1:50,000 mosaics numbered 9E and 8E. They will be blocked out in January 1965.</p><p>The area completed includes parts or all of the 1:50,000 scale mosaics numbered 8B, 8C, 8D, 8F, 9B, 9C, 9D, and 9F. No megascopic indication of an exploitable mineral deposit of any type, except the small occurrences of marble cited in the October 1964 report and slate already in use, was discovered. A previously unknown ancient working was found, but it is small. Unless spectro-chemical analysis of samples discloses anomalously great amounts of some element, the area examined must be considered as unfavorable for ore deposits, except possibly the gossan The Blue Mountains are low, but rugged, hills that have developed on mafic metamorphic rocks that occur in an arcuate \"mantle\" around a granite batholith, the Aranka-Wanamu Granite. The area lies within the Precambrian Guiana Shield and is entirely covered with tropical rain forest. The geology of the area is complex and is made up of an assemblage of metamorphic rocks consisting of phyllites, quartzites, amphibolites, and epidiorites that are intruded by serpentinites. The serpentinites occur as thin, tabular, dike-like bodies that trend northwest across the area. The serpentinites contain abundant magnetite, but very little chromite or sulfide minerals. Lletasomatic reaction zones have developed around the serpentinite bodies at their contacts with country rock. Peak discharges and high- and low-flow volumes for different durations were computed at selected recurrence intervals from statistics of the distributions of the annual values. These dependent variables, discharges and statistics of discharges, were regressed against independent variables of topographic, geomorphic, climatic, and mapped-flow characteristics. The results provide a base for investigating the adequacy of the stream-gaging program and a set of relationships for estimating natural flow characteristics at ungaged sites in the region under study. Comparisons were made of the results of regressions which used only topographic and climatic independent variables with those which also used mapped-flow characteristics as independent variables. The standard error of estimate of the&nbsp;low-flow characteristics was quite large, indicating that for this discharge range, other methods of obtaining this information, may be more accurate or that a quantification of the effect of other factors such as geology on low flow is probably needed to explain part of the present error. Annual and monthly mean flows were defined with standard errors of 18 to 49 percent. Flood peaks and high-flow volumes were defined with standard errors of about 50 percent and 30 percent, respectively, where a significant portion, the residual error, is probably due to sampling error The method was developed as a working base for the release entitled \"Estimated stream discharge entering Chesapeake Bay\" prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the States of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. This release, issued monthly beginning December 1967, is directed to the various groups who have need for such data in their studies of the environment and resources of the Bay. A copy of that release is included as an appendix to this report.</p><p>In addition to the methodology used in making estimates of inflow, the report presents considerable data on drainage basins and on streamflow patterns. The report thus serves as a reference for those receiving the monthly release on current conditions. No account is taken of ground-water inflow or of rainfall on and evaporation from the water surface of the Bay.
