A detailed geologic study was begun in 1951 by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Iowa Geological Survey to appraise the potentialities of the Iowa part of the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district for (1) zinc ore in rock strata that contain pitch-and-flat zinc ore bodies elsewhere in the mining district and (2) joint-controlled lead and zinc ore like that mined extensively during the 19th century in Dubuque County, Iowa. This investigation is an outgrowth of a geologic study of the entire district, begun in 1942 by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The area is near the center of the Powder River Basin, a large physiographic unit of prairie and sculptured terrain that occupies approximately 12, 000 square miles of northeastern Wyoming. The basin is bounded on the east by the Black hills, on the south by the Laramie Mountains, and on the west by the Big Horn Mountains. The northern end is more or less open into Montana. Much of the basin ranges in altitude from 4,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level; but in the central part, about 40 miles southwest of Gillette, the Pumpkin Buttes rise abruptly to an altitude of 6,000 feet.
Secondary uranium minerals were discovered in the vicinity of Pumpkin Buttes in October 1951 (Love, 1952). The following spring, a study of the area and the uranium occurrences was begun by the Geological Survey on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The accompanying map, which shows distinguishable lithologic units and occurrences of uranium in outcrop, is a result of the continuation of this study.

It contains the same rocks as the adjoining mining districts and is closely related to them structurally. It shows widespread evidence of weak mineralization at the surface and may contain ore deposits at depth, as the zones that have been productive in the adjoining mining districts lie beneath a cover of younger rocks in much of the area.

This Government-owned plant, located at Henderson, near Las Vegas, Nevada, close to the source of power at Boulder Dam, produced 81,272 tons of metal from 920,000 tons of ore during the period September 1942 to November 1944. Owing to the oversupply of magnesium toward the end of the war, mine production as a source for magnesium metal was curtailed and was finally stopped in November 1944. As of January 1947, 241,000 tons of magnesite from this area had been used in the production of refractories and oxychloride cement. Brucite deposits associated with the magnesite have been mined almost continuously since 1935 and had yielded 246,000 tons of ore through January 1945 for use in the refractoies industry of Ohio.
