However the role of sea ducks in the ecology of avian influenza, and how that role differs from freshwater ducks, has not been examined. We obtained and analyzed sera from North Atlantic sea ducks and determined the seroprevalence in those populations. We also tested swab samples from North Atlantic sea ducks for the presence of AIV. We found relatively high serological prevalence (61%) in these sea duck populations but low virus prevalence (0.3%). Using these data we estimated that an antibody half-life of 141 weeks (3.2 years) would be required to attain these prevalences. These findings are much different than what is known in freshwater waterfowl and have implications for surveillance efforts, AIV in marine environments, and the roles of sea ducks and other long-lived waterfowl in avian influenza ecology.
","language":"English","publisher":"Public Library of Science","publisherLocation":"San Francisco, CA","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0144524","usgsCitation":"Hall, J.S., Russell, R.E., Franson, J., Soos, C., Dusek, R.J., Allen, R.B., Nashold, S.W., Teslaa, J.L., Jonsson, J.E., Ballard, J.R., Harms, N.J., and Brown, J.D., 2015, Avian influenza ecology in North Atlantic sea ducks: Not all ducks are created equal: PLoS ONE, v. 10, no. 12, p. 1-16, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0144524.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"16","numberOfPages":"16","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-069941","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34983,"text":"Contaminant Biology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471563,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0144524","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":316723,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"12","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":6,"text":"Columbus PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-12-17","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56bb1bbce4b08d617f654de1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hall, Jeffrey S. 0000-0001-5599-2826 jshall@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5599-2826","contributorId":2254,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hall","given":"Jeffrey","email":"jshall@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":597668,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Russell, Robin E. 0000-0001-8726-7303 rerussell@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8726-7303","contributorId":3998,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Russell","given":"Robin","email":"rerussell@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":597669,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Franson, J. One strategy is reintroduction into historically productive waters. The St. Regis River, NY, represents one such adaptive-management effort, with shared management between New York and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. Between 1998 and 2004, a total of 4977 young-of-year Lake Sturgeon were released. Adaptive management requires intermediate progress metrics. During 2004 and 2005, we measured growth, habitat use, and survivorship metrics of the released fish. We captured a total of 95 individuals of all stocked ages. Year-class minimal-survival rates ranged from 0.19–2.1%. The size-at-age and length/biomass relationships were comparable to those reported for juveniles in other Great Lakes waters. These intermediate assessment metrics can provide feedback to resource managers who make restoration-program decisions on a much shorter time-scale than the time-frame in which the ultimate goal of a self-sustaining population can be attained.
","language":"English","publisher":"Humboldt Field Research Institute","publisherLocation":"Steuben, ME","doi":"10.1656/045.022.0408","usgsCitation":"Dittman, D.E., Chalupnicki, M.A., Johnson, J.H., and Snyder, J., 2015, Reintroduction of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) into the St. Regis River, NY:  Post-release assessment of habitat use and growth: Northeastern Naturalist, v. 22, no. 4, p. 704-716, https://doi.org/10.1656/045.022.0408.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"704","endPage":"716","numberOfPages":"13","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-017509","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":312781,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New York","otherGeospatial":"St. Regis River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -74.59579467773438,\n              45.029376918052705\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.65965270996094,\n              45.01481658592836\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.6905517578125,\n              44.96139702015699\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.7344970703125,\n              44.929807512153914\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.783935546875,\n              44.912304304581525\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.77500915527344,\n              44.88798544802558\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.81895446777344,\n              44.83590853592836\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.79286193847656,\n              44.80230124552821\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.83062744140625,\n              44.77354904110061\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.76402282714844,\n              44.75697346938202\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.75509643554686,\n              44.813018740612776\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.77844238281249,\n              44.8432118765634\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.73518371582031,\n              44.90063253713748\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.74479675292969,\n              44.904523389609324\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.70359802246094,\n              44.91911174115028\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.68231201171875,\n              44.94730538740607\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.64454650878906,\n              44.9575100188052\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.56077575683594,\n              45.02258255721372\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.59579467773438,\n              45.029376918052705\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"22","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":6,"text":"Columbus PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-12-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"567bd3c0e4b0a04ef491a217","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dittman, Dawn E. 0000-0002-0711-3732 ddittman@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0711-3732","contributorId":2762,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dittman","given":"Dawn","email":"ddittman@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":583164,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chalupnicki, Marc A. mchalupnicki@usgs.gov","contributorId":3236,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chalupnicki","given":"Marc","email":"mchalupnicki@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":583166,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Johnson, James H. 0000-0002-5619-3871 jhjohnson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-5619-3871","contributorId":389,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"James","email":"jhjohnson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":583165,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Snyder, James","contributorId":73481,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Snyder","given":"James","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":583167,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

However, these local populations are often subject to demographic stochasticity because of their small population size. Traditional modeling efforts such as population projection matrices do not consider this source of variation whereas individual-based models, which include demographic stochasticity, are computationally intense and lack analytical tractability. One compromise between approaches is branching process models because they accommodate demographic stochasticity and are easily calculated. These models are known within some sub-fields of probability and mathematical ecology but are not often applied in conservation biology and applied ecology. We applied branching process models to quantitatively compare and prioritize species locally vulnerable to the development of wind energy facilities. Specifically, we examined species vulnerability using branching process models for four representative species: A cave bat (a long-lived, low fecundity species), a tree bat (short-lived, moderate fecundity species), a grassland songbird (a short-lived, high fecundity species), and an eagle (a long-lived, slow maturation species). Wind turbine-induced mortality has been observed for all of these species types, raising conservation concerns. We simulated different mortality rates from wind farms while calculating local extinction probabilities. The longer-lived species types (e.g., cave bats and eagles) had much more pronounced transitions from low extinction risk to high extinction risk than short-lived species types (e.g., tree bats and grassland songbirds). High-offspring-producing species types had a much greater variability in baseline risk of extinction than the lower-offspring-producing species types. Long-lived species types may appear stable until a critical level of incidental mortality occurs. After this threshold, the risk of extirpation for a local population may rapidly increase with only minimal increases in wind mortality. Conservation biologists and wildlife managers may need to consider this mortality pattern when issuing take permits and developing monitoring protocols for wind facilities. We also describe how our branching process models may be generalized across a wider range of species for a larger assessment project and then describe how our methods may be applied to other stressors in addition to wind.

","language":"English","publisher":"Ecological Society of America","doi":"10.1890/ES15-00103.1","collaboration":"University of Wisconsin-La Crosse;","usgsCitation":"Erickson, R.A., Eager, E., Stanton, J.C., Beston, J.A., Diffendorfer, J., and Thogmartin, W.E., 2015, Assessing local population vulnerability to wind energy development with branching process models: an application to wind energy development: Ecosphere, v. 6, art254: 14 p., https://doi.org/10.1890/ES15-00103.1.","productDescription":"art254: 14 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-061790","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471564,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1890/es15-00103.1","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":312242,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"6","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":6,"text":"Columbus PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-12-11","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"566fe829e4b09cfe53ca794d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Erickson, Richard A. 0000-0003-4649-482X rerickson@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4649-482X","contributorId":5455,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erickson","given":"Richard","email":"rerickson@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":545704,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Eager, Eric A.","contributorId":140447,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Eager","given":"Eric A.","affiliations":[{"id":13504,"text":"Department of Mathematics, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":545705,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Stanton, Jessica C. 0000-0002-6225-3703 jcstanton@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6225-3703","contributorId":5634,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stanton","given":"Jessica","email":"jcstanton@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":545706,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Beston, Julie A. jbeston@usgs.gov","contributorId":5673,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Beston","given":"Julie","email":"jbeston@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":545707,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Diffendorfer, James E. 0000-0003-1093-6948 jediffendorfer@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1093-6948","contributorId":3208,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Diffendorfer","given":"James E.","email":"jediffendorfer@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":318,"text":"Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":651,"text":"Western Ecological Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":545708,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Thogmartin, Wayne E. 0000-0002-2384-4279 wthogmartin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2384-4279","contributorId":2545,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thogmartin","given":"Wayne","email":"wthogmartin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":545709,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

The statistical learning framework involves cross-validation (CV) training and testing data and a separate hold-out data set for model evaluation, with the goal of optimizing predictive performance by controlling for model overfit. The order of prediction performance according to both CV testing R2 and that for the hold-out data set was BRT > BN > ANN. For each method we identified two models based on CV testing results: that with maximum testing R2 and a version with R2 within one standard error of the maximum (the 1SE model). The former yielded CV training R2 values of 0.94–1.0. Cross-validation testing R2 values indicate predictive performance, and these were 0.22–0.39 for the maximum R2 models and 0.19–0.36 for the 1SE models. Evaluation with hold-out data suggested that the 1SE BRT and ANN models predicted better for an independent data set compared with the maximum R2 versions, which is relevant to extrapolation by mapping. Scatterplots of predicted vs. observed hold-out data obtained for final models helped identify prediction bias, which was fairly pronounced for ANN and BN. Lastly, the models were compared with multiple linear regression (MLR) and a previous random forest regression (RFR) model. Whereas BRT results were comparable to RFR, MLR had low hold-out R2 (0.07) and explained less than half the variation in the training data. Spatial patterns of predictions by the final, 1SE BRT model agreed reasonably well with previously observed patterns of nitrate occurrence in groundwater of the Central Valley.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.jhydrol.2015.10.025","usgsCitation":"Nolan, B.T., Fienen, M., and Lorenz, D.L., 2015, A statistical learning framework for groundwater nitrate models of the Central Valley, California, USA: Journal of Hydrology, v. 531, no. 3, p. 902-911, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhydrol.2015.10.025.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"902","endPage":"911","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-065964","costCenters":[{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471571,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhydrol.2015.10.025","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":312041,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.025146484375,\n              40.73893324113603\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.93701171874999,\n              40.38002840251183\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.16796875,\n              38.048091067457236\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.39941406249999,\n              34.95799531086792\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.67431640625,\n              34.97600151317591\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.795166015625,\n              36.19995805932895\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.92651367187499,\n              38.38472766885085\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.025146484375,\n              40.73893324113603\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"531","issue":"3","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":9,"text":"Reston PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5667ff32e4b06a3ea36c8e04","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nolan, Bernard T. 0000-0002-6945-9659 btnolan@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6945-9659","contributorId":2190,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nolan","given":"Bernard","email":"btnolan@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"T.","affiliations":[{"id":27111,"text":"National Water Quality Program","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":451,"text":"National Water Quality Assessment Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":573640,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fienen, Michael N. 0000-0002-7756-4651 mnfienen@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7756-4651","contributorId":893,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fienen","given":"Michael N.","email":"mnfienen@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":573641,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Lorenz, David L. 0000-0003-3392-4034 lorenz@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3392-4034","contributorId":1384,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lorenz","given":"David","email":"lorenz@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":573642,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The Integrated Waterbird Management and Monitoring programme (IWMM) represents one of the few attempts to monitor migrating waterbirds across entire flyways using targeted local surveys. This dataset included 13,208,785 waterfowl (eight Anas species) counted during 28,000 surveys at nearly 1,000 locations across the eastern United States between autumn 2010 and spring 2013 and was used to evaluate potential predictors of waterfowl abundance at the wetland scale. Mixed-effects, log-linear models of local abundance were built for the Atlantic and Mississippi flyways during spring and autumn migration to identify factors relating to habitat structure, forage availability, and migration timing that influence target dabbling duck species abundance. Results indicated that migrating dabbling ducks responded differently to environmental factors. While the factors identified demonstrated a high degree of importance, they were inconsistent across species, flyways and seasons. Furthermore, the direction and magnitude of the importance of each covariate group considered here varied across species. Given our results, actionable policy recommendations are likely to be most effective if they consider species-level variation within targeted taxonomic units and across management areas. The methods implemented here can easily be applied to other contexts, and serve as a novel investigation into local-level population patterns using data from broad-scale monitoring programmes.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust","publisherLocation":"Slimbridge","collaboration":"The Nature Conservancy; U.S. Fish and Wildlife We used location data from female polar bears fit with satellite radio collars to compare land use patterns in the Chukchi Sea between two periods (1986–1995 and 2008–2013) when substantial summer sea-ice loss occurred. In both time periods, polar bears predominantly occupied sea-ice, although land was used during the summer sea-ice retreat and during the winter for maternal denning. However, the proportion of bears on land for > 7 days between August and October increased between the two periods from 20.0% to 38.9%, and the average duration on land increased by 30 days. The majority of bears that used land in the summer and for denning came to Wrangel and Herald Islands (Russia), highlighting the importance of these northernmost land habitats to Chukchi Sea polar bears. Where bears summered and denned, and how long they spent there, was related to the timing and duration of sea ice retreat. Our results are consistent with other studies supporting increased land use as a common response of polar bears to sea-ice loss. Implications of increased land use for Chukchi Sea polar bears are unclear, because a recent study observed no change in body condition or reproductive indices between the two periods considered here. This result suggests that the ecology of this region may provide a degree of resilience to sea ice loss. However, projections of continued sea ice loss suggest that polar bears in the Chukchi Sea and other parts of the Arctic may increasingly use land habitats in the future, which has the potential to increase nutritional stress and human-polar bear interactions.
","language":"English","publisher":"PLOS","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0142213","usgsCitation":"Rode, K.D., Wilson, R.H., Regehr, E.V., St. Martin, M., Douglas, D., and Olson, J., 2015, Increased land use by Chukchi Sea polar bears in relation to changing sea ice conditions: PLoS ONE, v. 10, no. 11, e0142213; 18 p., https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0142213.","productDescription":"e0142213; 18 p.","numberOfPages":"18","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-064932","costCenters":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471592,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0142213","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":438661,"rank":0,"type":{"id":30,"text":"Data Release"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.5066/F7BZ643N","text":"USGS data release","linkHelpText":"Chukchi Sea Polar Bear Locations, 1985-1996"},{"id":311761,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Chukchi Sea","volume":"10","issue":"11","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-11-18","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"565ec4b0e4b071e7ea544411","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rode, Karyn D. 0000-0002-3328-8202 krode@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3328-8202","contributorId":5053,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rode","given":"Karyn","email":"krode@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":580721,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wilson, Ryan H. 0000-0001-7740-7771","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-7740-7771","contributorId":130989,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wilson","given":"Ryan","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[{"id":6987,"text":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Sevice","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":580722,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Regehr, Eric V. 0000-0003-4487-3105","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4487-3105","contributorId":66364,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Regehr","given":"Eric","email":"","middleInitial":"V.","affiliations":[{"id":12428,"text":"U. As temperature or precipitation regimes change, alpine mammals may also be faced with insurmountable barriers to dispersal. The slow rate or inability to adjust to rapidly shifting environmental conditions may cause isolated alpine species to become locally extirpated, resulting in reduced biodiversity. One proposed method for mitigating the impacts of alpine species loss is assisted migration. This method, which involves translocating a species to an area with more favourable climate and habitat characteristics, has become the subject of debate and controversy in the conservation community. The uncertainty associated with climate change projections, coupled with the thermal sensitivity of many alpine mammals, makes it difficult to a priori assess the efficacy of this technique as a conservation management tool. Here we present the American pika (Ochotona princeps) as a case study. American pikas inhabit rocky areas throughout the western US, and populations in some mountainous areas have become locally extirpated in recent years. We review known climatic and habitat requirements for this species, and also propose protocols designed to reliably identify favourable relocation areas. We present data related to the physiological constraints of this species and outline specific requirements which must be addressed for translocation of viable populations, including wildlife disease and genetic considerations. Finally, we discuss potential impacts on other alpine species and alpine communities, and overall implications for conserving alpine biodiversity in a changing climate.
","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"London","doi":"10.1080/14888386.2015.1112304","usgsCitation":"Wilkening, J.L., Ray, C., Ramsay, N.G., and Klingler, K., 2015, Alpine biodiversity and assisted migration: The case of the American pika (Ochotona princeps): Biodiversity, v. 16, no. 4, p. 1-13, https://doi.org/10.1080/14888386.2015.1112304.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"1","endPage":"13","numberOfPages":"13","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-067134","costCenters":[{"id":456,"text":"National Wildlife Health Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":311784,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.04687499999999,\n              49.095452162534826\n            ],\n            [\n              -105.29296874999999,\n              49.095452162534826\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.23828125,\n              44.902577996288876\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.88671875,\n              40.979898069620155\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.798828125,\n              38.548165423046584\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.271484375,\n              36.24427318493909\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.095703125,\n              34.379712580462204\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.0078125,\n              32.10118973232094\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.4140625,\n              31.50362930577303\n            ],\n            [\n              -106.34765625,\n              31.57853542647338\n            ],\n            [\n              -108.19335937499999,\n              31.728167146023935\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.357421875,\n              31.353636941500987\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.78515624999999,\n              32.694865977875075\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.42187500000001,\n              32.694865977875075\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.125,\n              33.211116472416855\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.44335937499999,\n              33.94335994657882\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.025390625,\n              34.161818161230386\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.81640624999999,\n              35.24561909420681\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.22265625000001,\n              37.16031654673677\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.365234375,\n              38.61687046392973\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.45312499999999,\n              39.774769485295465\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.15625000000001,\n              41.244772343082076\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.892578125,\n              41.902277040963696\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.24414062499999,\n              43.51668853502909\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.71679687499999,\n              45.27488643704894\n            ],\n            [\n              -124.71679687499999,\n              47.2195681123155\n            ],\n            [\n              -125.068359375,\n              48.574789910928864\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.31054687499999,\n              48.3416461723746\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.04687499999999,\n              49.095452162534826\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"16","issue":"4","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":6,"text":"Columbus PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5660243ae4b071e7ea544ca5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilkening, Jennifer L. 0000-0001-8748-4578","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8748-4578","contributorId":127685,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Wilkening","given":"Jennifer","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":7111,"text":"U. Despite the model having potential for elucidating change across systems, it has been used mainly as a metaphor, describing system dynamics qualitatively. We use a quantitative approach for testing premises (reorganisation, conservatism, adaptation) in the adaptive cycle, using Baltic Sea phytoplankton communities as an example of such complex system dynamics. Phytoplankton organizes in recurring spring and summer blooms, a well-established paradigm in planktology and succession theory, with characteristic temporal trajectories during blooms that may be consistent with adaptive cycle phases. We used long-term (1994–2011) data and multivariate analysis of community structure to assess key components of the adaptive cycle. Specifically, we tested predictions about: reorganisation: spring and summer blooms comprise distinct community states; conservatism: community trajectories during individual adaptive cycles are conservative; and adaptation: phytoplankton species during blooms change in the long term. All predictions were supported by our analyses. Results suggest that traditional ecological paradigms such as phytoplankton successional models have potential for moving the adaptive cycle from a metaphor to a framework that can improve our understanding how complex systems organize and reorganize following collapse. Quantifying reorganization, conservatism and adaptation provides opportunities to cope with the intricacies and uncertainties associated with fast ecological change, driven by shifting system controls. Ultimately, combining traditional ecological paradigms with heuristics of complex system dynamics using quantitative approaches may help refine ecological theory and improve our understanding of the resilience of ecosystems.
","language":"English","publisher":"PLOS","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0146053","usgsCitation":"Angeler, D., Allen, C.R., Garmestani, A.S., Gunderson, L.H., Hjerne, O., and Winder, M., 2015, Quantifying the adaptive cycle: PLoS ONE, v. 10, no. 12, e0146053: 17 p., https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0146053.","productDescription":"e0146053: 17 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-071543","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471602,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0146053","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":317931,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Baltic Sea","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              9.31640625,\n              53.69670647530323\n            ],\n            [\n              9.31640625,\n              66.17826596326798\n            ],\n            [\n              30.0146484375,\n              66.17826596326798\n            ],\n            [\n              30.0146484375,\n              53.69670647530323\n            ],\n            [\n              9.31640625,\n              53.69670647530323\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"12","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-12-30","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56bdbecae4b06458514aeede","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Angeler, David G.","contributorId":25027,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Angeler","given":"David G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Allen, Craig R. 0000-0001-8655-8272 allencr@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8655-8272","contributorId":1979,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Allen","given":"Craig","email":"allencr@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":198,"text":"Coop Res Unit Atlanta","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":619859,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Garmestani, Ahjond S.","contributorId":77285,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garmestani","given":"Ahjond","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619870,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Gunderson, Lance H.","contributorId":12182,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gunderson","given":"Lance","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619871,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Hjerne, Olle","contributorId":166719,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hjerne","given":"Olle","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619872,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5},{"text":"Winder, Monika","contributorId":68178,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Winder","given":"Monika","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":619873,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":6}]}}

Needle-leaf conifer and broad-leaf deciduous species are commonly associated with differences in tree growth, carbon (C) and nutrient cycling, and C accumulation in soils. Although this suggests that changes in tree species composition in Alaska could impact C and nutrient pools and fluxes, few studies have measured these linkages. We quantified C, nitrogen, phosphorus, and base cation pools and fluxes in three stands of black spruce and Alaska paper birch (Betula neoalaskana) that established following a single fire event in 1958. Paper birch consistently displayed characteristics of more rapid C and nutrient cycling, including greater aboveground net primary productivity, higher live foliage and litter nutrient concentrations, and larger ammonium and nitrate pools in the soil organic layer (SOL). Ecosystem C stocks (aboveground + SOL + 0–10 cm mineral soil) were similar for the two species; however, in black spruce, 78% of measured C was found in soil pools, primarily in the SOL, whereas aboveground biomass dominated ecosystem C pools in birch forest. Radiocarbon analysis indicated that approximately one-quarter of the black spruce SOL C accumulated prior to the 1958 fire, whereas no pre-fire C was observed in birch soils. Our findings suggest that tree species exert a strong influence over C and nutrient cycling in boreal forest and forest compositional shifts may have long-term implications for ecosystem C and nutrient dynamics.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/s10021-015-9912-7","usgsCitation":"Melvin, A.M., Mack, M., Johnstone, J.F., McGuire, A.D., Genet, H., and Schuur, E.A., 2015, Differences in ecosystem carbon distribution and nutrient cycling linked to forest tree species composition in a mid-successional boreal forest: Ecosystems, v. 18, no. 8, p. 1472-1488, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10021-015-9912-7.","productDescription":"17 p.","startPage":"1472","endPage":"1488","ipdsId":"IP-063589","costCenters":[{"id":200,"text":"Coop Res Unit Seattle","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":348463,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"18","issue":"8","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-09-08","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5a0425c2e4b0dc0b45b453fd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Melvin, April M.","contributorId":200151,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Melvin","given":"April","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721276,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mack, Michelle C.","contributorId":140367,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Mack","given":"Michelle C.","affiliations":[{"id":590,"text":"U.S. Army Corps of Engineers","active":false,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":721277,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Johnstone, Jill F.","contributorId":179336,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Johnstone","given":"Jill","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":721278,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"McGuire, A. The two major TN sources to local catchments on a mass basis were fertilizers and manure (51.7%) and wastewater discharge (15.9%). Other sources contributed < 12%. Fertilizer use is widespread in the Central Valley region of California, and also important in several other regions because of the diversity of California agriculture. Precipitation, sand content of surficial soils, wetlands, and tile drains were important for TN movement to stream reaches. Median streamflow in the study area is about 0.04 m3/s. Aquatic losses of nitrogen were found to be most important in intermittent and small to medium sized streams (0.2-14 m3/s), while larger streams showed less loss, and therefore are important for TN transport. Nitrogen loss in reservoirs was found to be insignificant, possibly because most of the larger ones are located upstream of nitrogen sources. The model was used to show loadings, sources, and tributary inputs to several major rivers. The information provided by the SPARROW model is useful for determining both the major sources contributing nitrogen to streams and the specific tributaries that transport the load.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/1752-1688.12325","usgsCitation":"Saleh, D., and Domagalski, J.L., 2015, SPARROW modeling of nitrogen sources and transport in To make effective decisions in natural resource management, an iterative, collaborative, and learning-based decision process may be more successful than a strictly consultative approach. One important, early step in a decision process is to identify priority species or systems. Although this promotes the conservation of select species or systems, it may inadvertently alter the future of non-target species and systems. We describe a process to screen terrestrial wildlife for potential sensitivity to climate change and then use the results to engage natural resource professionals in a process of identifying priorities for monitoring, research, and adaptation strategy implementation. We demonstrate this approach using a case study from Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, experts identified 23 out of 353 species with sufficient empirical research and management understanding to inform targeted action. Habitat management and management of hydrological conditions were the common strategies for targeted action. Although there may be an interest in adaptation strategy implementation for many species and systems, experts considered existing information inadequate to inform targeted action. According to experts, 40% of the vertebrate species in Wisconsin will require near-term intervention for climate adaptation. These results will inform state-wide conservation planning as well as regional efforts.
","language":"English","publisher":"The Conservation Fund","usgsCitation":"LeDee, O., and Ribic, C., 2015, In an effort to improve our ability to detect precursory activity leading to eruption at Okmok, we monitor a recent, and possibly ongoing, GPS-inferred rapid inflation event at the volcano using ambient noise interferometry (ANI). Applying this method, we identify changes in seismic velocity outside of Okmok’s caldera, which are related to the hydrologic cycle. Within the caldera, we observe decreases in seismic velocity that are associated with the GPS-inferred rapid inflation event. We also determine temporal changes in waveform decorrelation and show a continual increase in decorrelation rate over the time associated with the rapid inflation event. Themagnitude of relative velocity decreases and decorrelation rate increases are comparable to previous studies at Piton de la Fournaise that associate such changes with increased production of volatiles and/ormagmatic intrusion within the magma reservoir and associated opening of fractures and/or fissures. Notably, the largest decrease in relative velocity occurs along the intrastation path passing nearest to the center of the caldera. This observation, along with equal amplitude relative velocity decreases revealed via analysis of intracaldera autocorrelations, suggests that the inflation sourcemay be located approximately within the center of the caldera and represent recharge of shallow magma storage in this location. Importantly, there is a relative absence of seismicity associated with this and previous rapid inflation events at Okmok. Thus, these ANI results are the first seismic evidence of such rapid inflation at the volcano.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1002/2015JB011939","usgsCitation":"Bennington, N., Haney, M.M., De Angelis, S., Thurber, C., and Freymueller, J., 2015, Monitoring changes in seismic velocity related to an ongoing rapid inflation event at Okmok volcano, Alaska: Journal of Geophysical Research, v. 120, no. 8, p. 5664-5676, https://doi.org/10.1002/2015JB011939.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"5664","endPage":"5676","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-068858","costCenters":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471603,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1002/2015jb011939","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":325374,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alaska","otherGeospatial":"Okmok Volcano","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -168.25928811603328,\n              53.48606857460288\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.25928811603328,\n              53.35666372572206\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.0005045660394,\n              53.35666372572206\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.0005045660394,\n              53.48606857460288\n            ],\n            [\n              -168.25928811603328,\n              53.48606857460288\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"120","issue":"8","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-08-18","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"578dfdb4e4b0f1bea0e0f8a3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bennington, Ninfa","contributorId":49699,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bennington","given":"Ninfa","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642731,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Haney, Matthew M. 0000-0003-3317-7884 mhaney@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3317-7884","contributorId":172948,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Haney","given":"Matthew","email":"mhaney@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":615,"text":"Volcano Hazards Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":642730,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"De Angelis, Silvio","contributorId":172953,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"De Angelis","given":"Silvio","affiliations":[{"id":27128,"text":"Univ. of Liverpool","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":642732,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Thurber, Clifford","contributorId":44067,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thurber","given":"Clifford","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Freymueller, Jeff","contributorId":82190,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Freymueller","given":"Jeff","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":642734,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

As climate warms, surface water with strong groundwater influence will provide habitat stability and refuge for thermally stressed aquatic species, and is therefore critical to locate and protect. Alternatively, these discrete seepage locations may serve as potential point sources of contaminants from polluted aquifers. This study compares two increasingly common heat tracing methods to locate discrete groundwater discharge: direct-contact measurements made with fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing (FO-DTS) and remote sensing measurements collected with thermal infrared (TIR) cameras. FO-DTS is used to make high spatial resolution (typically m) thermal measurements through time within the water column using temperature-sensitive cables. The spatialtemporal data can be analyzed with statistical measures to reveal zones of groundwater influence, however, the personnel requirements, time to install, and time to georeference the cables can be burdensome, and the control units need constant calibration. In contrast, TIR data collection, either from handheld, airborne, or satellite platforms, can quickly capture point-in-time evaluations of groundwater seepage zones across large scales. However the remote nature of TIR measurements means they can be adversely influenced by a number of environmental and physical factors, and the measurements are limited to the surface skin temperature of water features. We present case studies from a range of lentic to lotic aquatic systems to identify capabilities and limitations of both technologies and highlight situations in which one or the other might be a better instrument choice for locating groundwater discharge. FO-DTS performs well in all systems across seasons, but data collection was limited spatially by practical considerations of cable installation. TIR is found to consistently locate groundwater seepage zones above and along the streambank, but submerged seepage zones are only well identified in shallow systems (e.g. <0.5 m depth) with moderate flow. Winter data collection, when groundwater is relatively warm and buoyant, increases the water surface expression of discharge zones in shallow systems.","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.jhydrol.2015.09.059","usgsCitation":"Hare, D.K., Briggs, M., Rosenberry, D., Boutt, D., and Lane, J., 2015, A comparison of The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) suggests issuing a fish consumption advisory when concentrations of MeHg in fish exceed a human health screening value of 300 ng/g. However, states have authority to develop their own systems for issuing fish consumption advisories for MeHg. Five states in the south central United States (Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas) issue advisories for the general human population when concentrations of MeHg exceed 700 ng/g to 1000 ng/g. The objective of the present study was to estimate the increase in fish consumption advisories that would occur if these states followed USEPA recommendations. The authors used the National Descriptive Model of Mercury in Fish to estimate the mercury concentrations in 5 size categories of largemouth bass–equivalent fish at 766 lentic and lotic sites within the 5 states. The authors found that states in this region have not issued site‐specific fish consumption advisories for most of the water bodies that would have such advisories if USEPA recommendations were followed. One outcome of the present study may be to stimulate discussion between scientists and policy makers at the federal and state levels about appropriate screening values to protect the public from the health hazards of consuming MeHg‐contaminated game fish.
","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1002/etc.3185","usgsCitation":"Adams, K., Drenner, R.W., Chumchal, M.M., A source of long-term information about flood events across the study area is the U.S. Geological Survey peak streamflow database. However, one challenge of answering climate-related questions with this dataset is that even in snowmelt-dominated areas, it is a mixed population of snowmelt/spring rain generated peaks and summer/fall rain generated peaks. Therefore, a process was developed to divide the annual peaks into two populations, or seasons, snowmelt/spring, and summer/fall. The two series were then tested for the hypotheses that because of changes in precipitation regimes, the odds of summer/fall peaks have increased and, because of temperature changes, snowmelt/spring peaks happen earlier. Over climatologically and geographically similar regions in the north-central USA, logistic regression was used to model the odds of getting a summer/fall peak. When controlling for antecedent wet and dry conditions and geographical differences, the odds of summer/fall peaks occurring have increased across the study area. With respect to timing within the seasons, trend analysis showed that in northern portions of the study region, snowmelt/spring peaks are occurring earlier. The timing of snowmelt/spring peaks in three regions in the northern part of the study area is earlier by 8.7– 14.3 days. These changes have implications for water interests, such as potential changes in lead-time for flood forecasting or changes in the operation of flood-control dams.
","language":"English","publisher":"John Wiley & Sons","doi":"10.1002/hyp.10693","usgsCitation":"Ryberg, K.R., Akyuz, F.A., Wiche, G.J., and Lin, W., 2015, Changes in seasonality and timing of peak streamflow in snow and semi-arid climates of the north-central United States, 1910–2012: Hydrological Processes, v. 30, no. 8, p. 1208-1218, https://doi.org/10.1002/hyp.10693.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"1208","endPage":"1218","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","temporalStart":"1910-01-01","temporalEnd":"2012-12-31","ipdsId":"IP-059283","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":311699,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -93.7353515625,\n 48.574789910928864\n ],\n [\n -91.23046875,\n 43.45291889355465\n ],\n [\n -90.263671875,\n 42.00032514831621\n ],\n [\n -91.4501953125,\n 40.38002840251183\n ],\n [\n -90.8349609375,\n 39.13006024213511\n ],\n [\n -102.1728515625,\n 38.61687046392973\n ],\n [\n -105.77636718749999,\n 38.92522904714054\n ],\n [\n -109.4677734375,\n 45.01141864227728\n ],\n [\n -113.09326171875,\n 48.99463598353408\n ],\n [\n -95.20751953125,\n 49.009050809382046\n ],\n [\n -93.7353515625,\n 48.574789910928864\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"30","issue":"8","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":4,"text":"Rolla PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-11-11","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56558a32e4b071e7ea53dedf","chorus":{"doi":"10.1002/hyp.10693","url":"http://dx.doi.org/10.1002/hyp.10693","publisher":"Wiley-Blackwell","authors":"Ryberg Karen R., Akyüz F. This study examined the phylogenetic relationships among different PRV sequence types present in samples from salmonids in Western Canada and the US, including Alaska (US), British Columbia (Canada) and Washington State (US). Tissues testing positive for PRV were partially sequenced for segment S1, producing 71 sequences that grouped into 10 unique sequence types. Sequence analysis revealed no identifiable geographical or temporal variation among the sequence types. Identical sequence types were found in fish sampled in 2001, 2005 and 2014. In addition, PRV positive samples from fish derived from Alaska, British Columbia and Washington State share identical sequence types. Comparative analysis of the phylogenetic tree indicated that Canada/US Pacific Northwest sequences formed a subgroup with some Norwegian sequence types (group II), distinct from other Norwegian and Chilean sequences (groups I, III and IV). Representative PRV positive samples from farmed and wild fish in British Columbia and Washington State were subjected to genome sequencing using next generation sequencing methods. Individual analysis of each of the 10 partial segments indicated that the Canadian and US PRV sequence types clustered separately from available whole genome sequences of some Norwegian and Chilean sequences for all segments except the segment S4. In summary, PRV was genetically homogenous over a large geographic distance (Alaska to Washington State), and the sequence types were relatively stable over a 13 year period.
","language":"English","publisher":"PLOS","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0141475","usgsCitation":"Siah, A., Morrison, D.B., Fringuelli, E., Savage, P.S., Richmond, Z., Purcell, M., Johns, R., Remaining grasslands are increasingly fragmented, mostly privately owned, and vary greatly in terms of habitat quality and protection status. A coordinated strategic response for grassland bird conservation is difficult, largely due to the scope and complexity of the problem, further compounded by biological, sociological, and economic uncertainties. We describe the results from a collaborative Structured Decision Making (SDM) workshop focused on linking social and economic drivers of landscape change to grassland bird population outcomes. We identified and evaluated alternative strategies for grassland bird conservation using a series of rapid prototype models. We modeled change in grassland and agriculture cover in hypothetical landscapes resulting from different landowner decisions in response to alternative socio-economic conservation policy decisions. Resulting changes in land cover at all three stages of the annual cycle (breeding, wintering, and migration) were used to estimate changes in grassland bird populations. Our results suggest that successful grassland bird conservation may depend upon linkages with ecosystem services on working agricultural lands and grassland-based marketing campaigns to engage the public. Hybridization often causes substantial change in patterns of gene expression, which, in turn, may cause phenotypic change. Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and cutthroat trout (O. clarkii) produce viable hybrids in the wild, and introgressive hybridization with introduced rainbow trout is a major conservation concern for native cutthroat trout. The two species differ in body shape, which is likely an evolutionary adaptation to their native environments, and their hybrids tend to show intermediate morphology. The characterization of gene expression patterns may provide insights on the genetic basis of hybrid and parental morphologies, as well as on the ecological performance of hybrids in the wild. Here, we evaluated the expression of eight growth-related genes (MSTN-1a, MSTN-1b, MyoD1a, MyoD1b, MRF-4, IGF-1, IGF-2, and CAST-L) and the relationship of these genes with growth traits (length, weight, and condition factor) in six line crosses: both parental species, both reciprocal F1 hybrids, and both first-generation backcrosses (F1 x rainbow trout and F1 x cutthroat trout). Four of these genes were differentially expressed among rainbow, cutthroat, and their hybrids. Transcript abundance was significantly correlated with growth traits across the parent species, but not across hybrids. Our findings suggest that rainbow and cutthroat trout exhibit differences in muscle growth regulation, that transcriptional networks may be modified by hybridization, and that hybridization disrupts intrinsic relationships between gene expression and growth patterns that may be functionally important for phenotypic adaptations.
","language":"English","publisher":"PLoS ONE","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0141373","usgsCitation":"Ostberg, C.O., Chase, D.M., and Hauser, L., 2015, Hybridization between Yellowstone cutthroat trout and rainbow trout alters the expression of muscle growth-related genes and their relationships with growth patterns: PLoS ONE, v. 10, no. 10, e0141373; 16 p., https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0141373.","productDescription":"e0141373; 16 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-065795","costCenters":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471655,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0141373","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":311167,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"10","issue":"10","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":12,"text":"Tacoma PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-10-20","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56431533e4b0aafbcd017fac","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ostberg, Carl O. 0000-0003-1479-8458 costberg@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1479-8458","contributorId":3031,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ostberg","given":"Carl","email":"costberg@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"O.","affiliations":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":579394,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chase, Dorothy M. dchase@usgs.gov","contributorId":4786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chase","given":"Dorothy","email":"dchase@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":654,"text":"Western Fisheries Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":579395,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Hauser, Lorenz","contributorId":62510,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hauser","given":"Lorenz","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":579396,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Renewable energy development and biodiversity conservation are often considered beneficial environmental goals. The direct footprint and disturbance of renewable energy, however, can displace species’ habitat and negatively impact populations and natural communities if sited without ecological consideration. Offsets have emerged as a potentially useful tool to mitigate residual impacts after trying to avoid, minimize, or restore affected sites. Yet the problem of efficiently designing a set of offset sites becomes increasingly complex where many species or many sites are involved. Spatial conservation prioritization tools are designed to handle this problem, but have seen little application to offset siting and analysis. To address this need we designed an offset siting support tool for the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan (DRECP) of California, and present a case study of hypothetical impacts from solar development in the Western Mojave subsection. We compare two offset scenarios designed to mitigate a hypothetical 15,331 ha derived from proposed utility-scale solar energy development (USSED) projects. The first scenario prioritizes offsets based precisely on impacted features, while the second scenario offsets impacts to maximize biodiversity conservation gains in the region. The two methods only agree on 28% of their prioritized sites and differ in meeting species-specific offset goals. Differences between the two scenarios highlight the importance of clearly specifying choices and priorities for offset siting and mitigation in general. Similarly, the effects of background climate and land use change may lessen the durability or effectiveness of offsets if not considered. Our offset siting support tool was designed specifically for the DRECP area, but with minor code modification could work well in other offset analyses, and could provide continuing support for a potentially innovative mitigation solution to environmental impacts.
","language":"English","publisher":"Public Library of Science (PLOS)","doi":"10.1371/journal.pone.0140226","usgsCitation":"Kreitler, J.R., Schloss, C.A., Soong, O., Hannah, L., and Davis, F., 2015, Conservation planning for offsetting the impacts of development: a case study of biodiversity and renewable energy in the Mojave Desert: PLoS ONE, v. 10, no. 11, e0140226; 15 p., https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0140226.","productDescription":"e0140226; 15 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-058617","costCenters":[{"id":657,"text":"Western Geographic Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471658,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0140226","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":311163,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Mojave Desert","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -116.03759765625,\n              32.62087018318113\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.488037109375,\n              33.26624989076275\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.697021484375,\n              33.8339199536547\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.454833984375,\n              34.31621838080741\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.817138671875,\n              34.8047829195724\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.88330078125,\n              35.69299463209881\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.38867187500001,\n              37.212831514455964\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.960205078125,\n              37.54457732085582\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.63134765625001,\n              35.02099970111467\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.12597656249999,\n              34.32529192442733\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.58740234375,\n              33.44977658311846\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.664306640625,\n              33.03629817885956\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.488525390625,\n              33.02708758002874\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.488525390625,\n              32.79651010951669\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.67529296874999,\n              32.694865977875075\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.03759765625,\n              32.62087018318113\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"10","issue":"11","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-11-03","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56431532e4b0aafbcd017f9e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kreitler, Jason R. 0000-0002-0243-5281 jkreitler@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0243-5281","contributorId":4050,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kreitler","given":"Jason","email":"jkreitler@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":657,"text":"Western Geographic Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":579234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Schloss, Carrie A.","contributorId":149713,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Schloss","given":"Carrie","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":17788,"text":"The Nature Conservancy of California","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":579235,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Soong, Oliver","contributorId":147794,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Soong","given":"Oliver","email":"","affiliations":[{"id":16936,"text":"University of California Santa Barbara","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":579236,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Hannah, Lee","contributorId":149715,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Hannah","given":"Lee","affiliations":[{"id":16938,"text":"Conservation International","active":true,"usgs":false}],"preferred":false,"id":579239,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Davis, Frank W.","contributorId":36894,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Davis","given":"Frank W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":579237,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":5}]}}

The background noise of the instrument—that is, non-linear drift and random tares—typically requires some form of least-squares network adjustment to integrate data collected during a campaign that may take several days to weeks. Here, we present an approach to remove the change in the observed relative-gravity differences caused by hydrologic or other transient processes during a single campaign, so that the adjusted gravity values can be referenced to a single epoch. The conceptual approach is an example of coupled hydrogeophysical inversion, by which a hydrologic model is used to inform and constrain the geophysical forward model. The hydrologic model simulates the spatial variation of the rate of change of gravity as either a linear function of distance from an infiltration source, or using a 3-D numerical groundwater model. The linear function can be included in and solved for as part of the network adjustment. Alternatively, the groundwater model is used to predict the change of gravity at each station through time, from which the accumulated gravity change is calculated and removed from the data prior to the network adjustment. Data from a field experiment conducted at an artificial-recharge facility are used to verify our approach. Maximum gravity change due to hydrology (observed using a superconducting gravimeter) during the relative-gravity field campaigns was up to 2.6 μGal d−1, each campaign was between 4 and 6 d and one month elapsed between campaigns. The maximum absolute difference in the estimated gravity change between two campaigns, two months apart, using the standard network adjustment method and the new approach, was 5.5 μGal. The maximum gravity change between the same two campaigns was 148 μGal, and spatial variation in gravity change revealed zones of preferential infiltration and areas of relatively high groundwater storage. The accommodation for spatially varying gravity change would be most important for long-duration campaigns, campaigns with very rapid changes in gravity and (or) campaigns where especially precise observed relative-gravity differences are used in the network adjustment.
","language":"English","publisher":"Published for the Royal Astronomical Society, the Deutsche Geophysikalische Gesellschaft, and the European Geophysical Society by Blackwell Scientific Publications","publisherLocation":"Oxford, UK","doi":"10.1093/gji/ggv493","usgsCitation":"Kennedy, J.R., and Ferre, T.P., 2015, Accounting for time- and space-varying changes in the gravity field to improve the network adjustment of relative-gravity data: Geophysical Journal International, v. 2, no. 204, p. 892-906, https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggv493.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"892","endPage":"906","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","ipdsId":"IP-067380","costCenters":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":471661,"rank":0,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggv493","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":312246,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"2","issue":"204","publishingServiceCenter":{"id":14,"text":"Menlo Park PSC"},"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2015-12-10","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"566ff63be4b09cfe53ca7965","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kennedy, Jeffrey R. 0000-0002-3365-6589 jkennedy@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3365-6589","contributorId":2172,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kennedy","given":"Jeffrey","email":"jkennedy@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[{"id":128,"text":"Arizona Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":581889,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Ferre, Ty P.A.","contributorId":102167,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ferre","given":"Ty","email":"","middleInitial":"P.A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":581890,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
