A broad geologic study of the structure and ore deposits of the Wisconsin-Illinois-Iowa zinc-lead district (fig. 1) was begun by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1942.  The main object of the present program is to delineate the areas favorable to future exploration for zinc-lead ore deposits.  As part of the program the Sinsinawa River area in southeastern Grant County, Wis., was selected for a detailed geologic study.  This study was made in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.

The Lake Valley district was originally developed as a manganese-silver district, but the known silver-bearing ore bodies have long since been worked out.  The critical shortage of manganese during World War II renewed interest in the manganese deposits; from October 1941 through June 1942 the U. S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a cooperative exploration program in the district.  This exploration demonstrated that the Lake Valley district contained about 175,000 tons of ore; approximately 37,000 tons has subsequently been mined.  The present reserves are estimated to be approximately 140,000 tones of ore with a manganese content of more than 10 percent and an average content of 16.4 percent; about 75,000 tons of the ore has manganese content of more than 15 percent and an average content of 20.7 percent.

The Beetown area, in Grant County, Wisconsin, in the northwestern part of the Upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead district, lies in the western part of T. 4 N., R. 4 W., and the eastern part of T. 4 N., R. 5 W. The village of Beetown is at about its center.

Recent geologic investigations in the area by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey, indicate that further prospecting for both lead and zinc ore is justified.  This brief preliminary paper discusses geologic features of the lead and the zinc deposits.  It is one of several areas within the district chosen for detailed geolgic study because surface indications and past production suggest that the area may contain undiscovered lead and zinc deposits.

The Barnes Hill talc prospect is in northeastern Waterbury township, Washington County, Vermont, about 2.2 miles N. 35° E. of the road triangle at Waterbury Center.  The deposit occurs in a body of ultramafic rock that crops out between the altitudes of 1,150 and 1,190 feet above sea level, near the crest of a broad, low ridge on a gently rolling upland of low relief.  The area surveyed is about 46 acres.  It is drained on the east by a small tributary of Thatcher Brook and on the west by Bryant Brook.  Thatcher Brook empties into the Winooski River at Waterbury; Bryant Brook flows into the Waterbury River, a tributary of the Winooski River.  Most of the area is in open pasture, with a few scattered spruce and hemlock, but along the eastern side of the property there is a dense growth of maple saplings and underbrush.

During the period 1940-1942 the United States Geological Survey made a geologic study of the manganese deposits of the James River-Roanoke River district, in the general vicinity of Lynchburg, Va. (fig. 1), as part of its program of strategic minerals investigations.  This work was done by the writer and supervised by D. F. Hewett.  John Rodgers and W. R. Wagner assisted during part of the project.  In the course of the investigation, the geology was mapped over an area about 60 miles long and several miles wide, from Altavista on the Roanoke River northeast to Howardsville on the James River (fig. 2); and the mineral deposits-principally manganese, iron, and barite-were studied.  After completion of the geologic studies, the writer participated in an exploration project conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines in the early summer of 1942 at five manganese deposits in the district.  This preliminary report presents the essential information concerning the mineral deposits of the region in advance of the more comprehensive report on the geology and mineral deposits that will be published as a bulletin of the U.S. Geological Survey.

This report sets forth the geology and economic possibilities of the Brandy Brook and Silver Pond belts of magnetic anomalies, Cranberry Lake quadrangle, St. Lawrence County, northwestern New York.  each belt contains a known magnetite deposit, partly explored through diamond drilling by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.  The Brandy Brook Northwest deposit is a body of low-grade to medium-grade ore, possibly of lathlike shape.  The Silver Pond deposit has no commercial interest at the moment.  One of more promising magnetic anomalies remain to be tested by drilling.

In April 1949 a deposit containing considerable quantities of the rare mineral bastnaesite - the fluorocarbonate of cerium, lanthanum, and other rare earths - was discovered near Mountain Pass, San Bernardino County, Calif.  Small quantities of bastnaesite have been found in several places in the United States, but this area is the first that offers promise of being a commercial source of cerium, lanthanum, and other rare earths.
