This natural phenomenon of flooding has occurred on the Delaware River in the past and will occur in the future. T' o resulting inundation of large areas can cause property damage, business losses and possible loss of life, and may result in emergency costs for protection, rescue, and salvage work. For optimum development of the river valley consistent with the flood risk, an evaluation of flood conditions is necessary. Basic data and the interpretation of the data on the regimen of the streams, particularly the magnitude of floods to be expected, the frequency of their occurrence, and the areas inundated, are essential for planning and development of flood-prone areas.

This report presents information relative to the extent, depth, and frequency of floods on the Delaware River and its tributaries in the vicinity of Belvidere, N.J. Flooding on the tributaries detailed in the report pertains only to the effect of backwater from the Delaware River. Data are presented for several past floods with emphasis given to the floods of August 19, 1955 and May 24, 1942. In addition, information is given for a hypothetical flood based on the flood of August 19, 1955 modified by completed (since 1955) and planned flood-control works.

By use of relations presented in this report the extent, depth, and frequency of flooding can be estimated for any site along the reach of the Delaware River under study. Flood data and the evaluation of the data are presented so that local and regional agencies, organizations, and individuals may have a technical basis for making decisions on the use of flood-prone areas. The Delaware River Basin Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey regard this program of flood-plain inundation studies as a positive step toward flood-damage prevention. Flood-plain inundation studies, when followed by appropriate land-use regulations, are a valuable and economical supplement to physical works for flood control, such as dams and levees. Both physical works and flood-plain regulations are included in the comprehensive plans for development of the Delaware River basin.

Recommendations for land use, or suggestions for limitations of land use, are not made herein. Other reports on recommended general use and regulation of land in flood-prone areas are available (Dola, 1961; White, 1961; American Society of Civil Engineers Task Force on Flood Plain Regulations, 1962; and Goddard, 1963). The primary responsibility for planning for the optimum land use in the flood plain and the implementation of flood-plain zoning or other regulations to achieve such optimum use rest with the state and local interests. The preparation of this report was undertaken after consultation with representatives of the Lehigh-Northampton Counties, Pennsylvania, Joint Planning Commission and the Warren County, New Jersey, Regional Planning Board and after both had demonstrated their need for flood-plain information and their willingness to consider flood-plain regulations.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Trenton, New Jersey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6643","usgsCitation":"Farlekas, G.M., 1966, Extent and frequency of floods on Delaware River in vicinity of Belvidere, New Jersey: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-43, Report: vii, 44 p.; Plate: 31.15 x 28.59 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6643.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 44 p.; Plate: 31.15 x 28.59 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":173957,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/ofr6643.PNG"},{"id":330308,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0043/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":330309,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0043/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"New Jersey","city":"Belvidere","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -75.21034240722656,\n              40.74907763805906\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.21034240722656,\n              40.88029480552824\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.99473571777344,\n              40.88029480552824\n            ],\n            [\n              -74.99473571777344,\n              40.74907763805906\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.21034240722656,\n              40.74907763805906\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a06e4b07f02db5f8b2f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Farlekas, George M.","contributorId":44963,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Farlekas","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245518,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The defined relations will be useful for the design of culverts and other hydraulic structures. The relations are expressed in terms of basin characteristics.

Peakflow records at 95 sites in Kansas for an 8-year period provided the basic data. The records were analyzed with respect to 20 basin characteristics by multiple-regression techniques. The resulting formulas relate flood magnitude and frequency to size of contributing drainage area, an index of stream-bed slope, and the average number of days per year when rainfall exceeded 1.0 inch. The other 17 factors had no statistical significance.

To illustrate a typical application of the flood-frequency relation, a step-bystep method is presented for computing a frequency curve for Rock Creek near Meriden, Kans. The frequency curve shows that a peak discharge of 3,620 cfs (cubic feet per second) can be expected once every 10 years on the average, and that the 67 percent confidence interval ranges from 1,820 cfs to 7,230 cfs. The large range results from the fact that only 8 years of record have been collected and emphasizes the need for collecting records for a longer period.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. The climate is semiarid with rainfall near 5 inches per year. Agricultural development within the area uses over half the 700,000 acre-feet per year flow of the Kern River, plus a considerable amount drawn from the ground-water reservoir particularly during periods of low flow. \r\n\r\nThe area overlies a deep structural trough between crystalline rocks of the Sierra Nevada and the marine rocks of Tertiary age of the Coast Ranges. The top horizon of the marine rocks that lap on the Sierra Nevada block underlies the report area at an average depth of 2,000 feet. The overlying continental deposits that form the groundwater reservoir consist of alluvial-fan and lacustrine deposits. \r\n\r\nThe continental deposits are subdivided into three lithologic units on the basis of grain size and sorting. The gravel and clay unit consists of older alluvial-fan material, of both Sierra Nevada and Coast Range provenance, that shows extremely poor sorting with some diagenetic decomposition through chemical weathering. The fine sand to clay unit consists principally of fine sand, silt, and clay deposited in a lacustrine environment, although some of the unit is of alluvial-fan origin derived from poorly consolidated marine shale of the Coast Ranges. Within the fine sand to clay unit three distinct clays, which affect ground-water conditions, can be recognized. The gravel to medium sand unit consists of unweathered alluvial-fan material that shows much better sorting than the gravel and clay unit. In the eastern part of the area the basal part of this unit is a gravel lentil that can be traced in the subsurface more than 250 square miles. The overlying deposits consist principally of medium sand. In the western part of the area the unit is a heterogeneous gravel and sand unit. Permeability in Meinzer units of the gravel and clay unit ranges between 10 and 100 with specific yield about 5 percent. For the fine sand to clay unit the permeability ranges between 0.0001 and 100 with about 10 percent specific yield. The gravel to medium sand unit has permeabilities between 100 and 10,000, and specific yield is about 15 percent. \r\n\r\nFor the period 1955-59 the annual gross surface-water supply was estimated at 421,000 acre-feet and pumpage was 664,000 acre-feet, giving a rounded total supply of 1,100,000 acre-feet. Annual consumptive use was estimated at 750,000 acre-feet and annual infiltration at 350,000 acre-feet. The approximate 300,000 acre-feet difference between 664,000 acre-feet pumped and 350,000 acre-feet infiltrated has caused an annual decline in water levels of up to 7 feet. \r\n\r\nGround water occurs under both unconfined and confined conditions within the report area. In general, the gravel to medium sand unit contains unconfined water, and the other two units contain confined water. \r\n\r\nPumping is less intense in the Kern River fan area than in the adjoining areas to the north or south. This fact, plus infiltration from the Kern River, results in ground-water movement being principally out of the area. There is a ground-water divide that approximately underlies the Kern River. South of the river the flow spreads out semicircularly from the river, and north of the river the flow is linear to the northwest. \r\n\r\nBased on chemical quality the ground water has been divided areally into (1) east side, (2) west side, and (3) axial water. \r\n\r\nWith the exception of two areas of comparable size northwest of Bakersfield and a much smaller area southeast of that city where ground water is somewhat saline, east-side ground water is generally of the calcium bicarbonate and calcium sodium bicarbonate type of low to medium salinity. The chemical character of east-side ground water is necessarily related to that of Kern River water, the principal source of recharge, and water of intermittent streams which drain the dissected upland","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/ofr6621","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the California Department of Water Resources","usgsCitation":"Dale, R.H., French, J.J., and Gordon, G.V., 1966, Ground-Water Geology and Hydrology of the Kern River Alluvial-Fan Area, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-21, Report: iv, 92 p.; 7 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6621.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 92 p.; 7 Plates","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":110360,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_52793.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"52793"},{"id":156947,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":52251,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52252,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52253,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52254,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52255,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52256,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52257,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":52258,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0021/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d697","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dale, R. It lies east of the Uncompahgre River valley and south of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River. Rocks dip gently in most of the quadrangle, but they are locally upturned and faulted on the margin of the Gunnison uplift and are intensely deformed in the core of the uplift. The rocks exposed are of Precambrian, late Mesozoic, and Cenozoic age. \r\n\r\nPrecambrian rocks include metasedimentary schist and gneiss, granitic pegmatite, and olivine gabbro. The oldest Mesozoic rocks exposed are continental, fresh-water, and lagoonal deposits in the Late Jurassic Entrada Sandstone, Wanakah Formation, and Morrison Formation. Channel-fill deposits that unconformably overlie the Jurassic rocks are possibly the Burro Canyon Formation of Early Cretaceous age. Upper Cretaceous rocks include marine and nearshore deposits of the Dakota \r\n\r\nSandstone, Mancos Shale, and Pictured Cliffs Sandstone, and the fresh- and brackish-water sandstone, shale, and coal of the Fruitland Formation. Rocks of Late Cretaceous age that crop out in the adjacent Cimarron Ridge area may also have been deposited in this quadrangle but are now eroded; these rocks include the nonmarine Kirtland Shale and an unnamed volcanic conglomerate and tuff breccia. Nine faunal zones in the Mancos Shale help to establish the correct correlation of units in the Upper Cretaceous. The Pictured Cliffs Sandstone, Fruitland Formation, and Kirtland Shale of the Cerro Summit area have been mapped by some geologists as the Mesaverde Formation. Fossils indicate that the rocks are younger than the type Mesaverde. The unnamed volcanic rocks represent major volcanism in nearby areas. A Late Cretaceous (Maestrichtian) age for the volcanism is indicated by palynological evidence and an isotopic age of approximately 66 million years. Middle Tertiary rocks are conglomerate and tuff breccia. Upper Tertiary or lower Quaternary rocks include gravel along Pool Gulch and older landslide debris on Waterdog Peak. Pleistocene and Recent deposits consist of the older stream gravel of Shinn Park, valley-fill deposits of Bostwick-Shinn Park, and pediment, landslide, eolian, alluvial, and colluvial deposits. P1elstocene valley-fill deposits of Bostwick-Shinn Park were deposited during the Cedar Ridge, or Kansan, to Pinedale or late Wisconsin times. The valley-fill deposits are divided into five units that are separated by strong Interglacial or Interstadial soils and that contain three volcanic ash beds. Chemical and petrographic data suggest that the middle ash bed may correlate with the Pearlette Ash Member (late Kansan) of the Sappa Formation in Nebraska. Alluvium on two pediment surfaces seems to be of Sacagawea Ridge or Illinoian age. Landslide deposits, of Pleistocene and Recent age, cover about 85 percent of the quadrangle; most of the deposits were formerly mapped as till. The name Cerro Till was abandoned because till does not occur in the type area.\r\n\r\nThe dominant tectonic structures are the high-angle Cimarron fault of a few thousand feet displacement and the broad Montrose syncline. Evidence in the Cimarron Ridge area suggests that these structures formed in Late Cretaceous (Maestrichtian) time. Much of the strata near the surface of the quadrangle has been involved in landsliding that has continued from late Tertiary to the present.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr6624","usgsCitation":"Dickinson, R.G., 1966, Geology of the Cerro Summit quadrangle, Montrose County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 66-24, 117 p. ill., 2 maps (1 col.) ;30 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6624.","productDescription":"117 p. ill., 2 maps (1 col.) ;30 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":147751,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0024/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":41765,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0024/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":41766,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1966/0024/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae884","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dickinson, Robert G.","contributorId":79489,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dickinson","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167651,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This belt, which is about 50 miles long, extends from the region just west of Boulder southwestward across the Front Range. From 1859, when placer gold was discovered in Idaho Springs and lode gold in Central City, through 1959, ores valued at about $200 million were shipped from a 50-square-mile area that includes the Idaho Springs and adjacent districts to the north, west, and southwest. The adjacent Central City district, which produced ores valued at more than \\$100 million, is clearly the most important district in the mineral belt. The Idaho Springs district from 1860 to 1959 produced ores valued at about $65 million, and the districts to the west and southwest produced smaller amounts. Gold has accounted for about 60 percent of the value of the ore, but in some areas silver provides the chief values, and copper, lead, and zinc add value to the ores in most areas. Mining activity in the Idaho Springs and adjacent districts was at its 'heyday' in the late 1800's, it declined sharply after 1914, it was somewhat renewed during the 1930's, and it greatly declined during World War II. In the 1950's uranium prospecting stimulated some mining activity. No uranium was produced, however, and at the close of the decade only one mine--the Bald Eagle--was being worked for its precious- and base-metal ores. In this report, 135 mines and prospects are described. The mines and prospects described are those that were accessible at the time of this study, as well as a few inaccessible properties for which some information was available. Most of the data for the inaccessible or unimportant properties were obtained from Bastin and Hill (1917) and Spurr, Garrey, and Ball (1908). The following list shows, in alphabetical order, the names of about 325 openings of mines and prospects, their coordinate location on the district map (fig. 1), the page of this report on which their description starts, and the number of the illustration, if any, referring to them.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston,
