Seismic refraction and electrical resistivity surveys were made during the summer and fall of 1952 in the Tanana Valley near Fairbanks, Alaska, as part of the studies of the application of geophysical techniques to ground-water problems in Alaska instigated in 1951 by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Laboratories. Work centered around the highway junctions at Fairbanks, Big Delta, and Tok. It was found that both survey methods defined the horizontal extent of the frozen ground and both were capable of determining the depth to the top of the permafrost but neither regularly yielded reliable information on the material beneath the top of the permafrost. The greatest need at present is for a thorough examination of data obtained in the field seasons of 1948 and 1952. Two fundamental theoretical investigations are desirable: (1) examination of the attenuation of longitudinal waves traveling through a thin layer, and (2) further development of the theoretical multilayer resistivity interpretation of problems in which the second layer has a very high resistivity. Further field work should include: (1) tests of the U.S. Geological Survey's new shallow-reflection seismograph; (2) a brief test of electromagnetic equipment; (3) additional resistivity measurements with commutated current; and (4) both seismic and resistivity measurements in areas where the bedrock possesses different physical properties from the schist usually found in interior Alaska. It is doubtful that geophysical techniques are sufficiently developed to be valuable for use by Army personnel in prospecting for ground water in areas of thick permafrost.

The basin contains sedimentary rocks ranging from Cambrian through Recent in age and attaining a maximum thickness between 14,000 and 15,000 feet. The Upper Cretaceous sedimentary rocks exceed 8,000 feet in thickness and can be divided into two groups: the lower Upper Cretaceous which is composed of the non marine and non-marine rocks and the upper Upper Cretaceous which is composed of the non-marine Kirtland and Fruitland Formations. The Kirtland Shale is subdivided into the lower shale, Farmington Sandstone, and upper shale members.
The rocks of the Kirtland and Fruitland Formations consist of fluviatile and flood plain deposits and range in thickness from 1750 feet in the northwest part of the basin to 0 feet on the eastside of the basin. The thinning of the Kirtland and Fruitland Formations from west to east is primarily the result of erosion following tilting of the San Juan Basin area toward the west after either part or all of the upper shale member had been deposited. The overlying Ojo Alamo Sandstone rests on progressively older rocks across the basin overstepping the under lying upper shale member, Farmington Sandstone Member, Fruitland Formation, and finally resting on the Lewis Shale on the east side of the basin. The source area for the rocks of the Kirtland and Fruitland Formations was probably to the north or northwest of the San Juan Basin area.
The Kirtland and Fruitland rocks have produced minor amounts of oil and gas. The Fruitland Formation contains large coal deposits some of which are currently being strip mined near Fruitland, New Mexico

A sodium-potassium water is related to tuff (in part zeolitized) and to alluvium containing detrital tuff. A calcium-magnesium water is related to limestone and dolomite, or to alluvium containing detritus of these rock types. A mixed chemical type, containing about as much sodium and potassium as calcium and magnesium, may result from the addition of one of the first two types of water to the other; to passage of water first through tuff and then through carbonate rock, or vice versa; and to ion-exchange during water travel. Consideration of the distribution of these water types, together with the distribution of sodium in the water and progressive changes in the dissolved solids, suggests that the ground water in the Nevada Test Site probably moves toward the Amargosa Desert, not into Indian Spring Valley and thence southeastward toward Las Vegas. The headquarters site is in the narrow bedrock-walled, alluvium-floored valley of the Nisqually River. The well was drilled to a depth of 96 feet in a terraced outwash deposit which underlies the site. Two confined aquifers were penetrated but only the lower aquifer was screened and developed.
The well was test pumped at various rates, the highest being 235 gallons per minute. During the first of two pumping tests, the specific capacity decreased abruptly. The decrease may have resulted from increased resistance to water movement caused by shifting of the sand and gravel adjacent to the well screen. The specific capacity of the well probably can be increased by additional development; however, because the well is capable of meeting the production requirements of the National Park Service additional development is not essential.
Ground-water levels in the valley alluvium fluctuate at least 16 feet in response to seasonal variations in recharge.
A sample of water taken from the well after 24 hours of pumping was of excellent chemical quality and is classified as soft.
Future ground-water development probably will be most successful in the central and southeastern parts of the headquarters site where the valley alluvium is thickest.

Ion exchange and the nature of competition among cations are given. Distribution coefficients for carrier-free cesium, strontium, and iodine were determined on 17 samples collected during July, 1961, in the vicinity of Cape Thompson, northwestern Alaska. High percentage uptake of these ions was measured under the test conditions. Cesium adsorption, at 1 day, was found to be represented by the mass-action equation. The distribution coefficients for cesium adsorption were so large that, in all but a few cases, very little of this nuclide would remain long in solution in the natural waters of the area. Strontium adsorption was found to be a function of the calcium-plus-magnesium concentration and to be independent of the sodium concentration. In most samples, its equilibrium is reached in less than 1 day. Iodine sorption varied with percent organic matter in the samples. If the iodine were in contact with organic matter for several days, a substantial part of it probably would be removed from solution in the natural waters.

Extensive land use and land-treatment changes have taken place in the 12.2 square-mile Corey Creek study basin while such changes in the 10.2 square-mile Elk Run basin, which is adjacent to the northeast, have been relatively slight. Elk Run basin, which is topographically and hydrologically similar to Corey Creek basin, was used as an external control for the Corey Creek basin study.
