Because effective management and development of water resources in this semiarid area are essential to the viability of the basin, many hydrologic data- collection programs and investigations have been done. This report contains a bibliography of selected water-resources information about the basin, including regularly published information and special investigations, from Federal, State, and other organizations. The log-Pearson Type III distribution and methodology recommended by the Interagency Committee on Water Data was used to determine the magnitude and frequency of floods at 79 gaging stations that had 11 to 72 years of record. Multiple regression analysis was used to construct regression equations to transfer the magnitude and frequency information from gaged sites to ungaged sites. Oahu was divided into three hydrologic regions to define relations between peak discharge and drainage-basin and climatic characteristics. Regression equations are provided to estimate the 2-, 5-, 10-, 25-, 50-, and 100-year peak discharges at ungaged sites. Significant basin and climatic characteristics included in the regression equations are drainage area, median annual rainfall, and the 2-year, 24-hour rainfall intensity. Drainage areas for sites used in this study ranged from 0.03 to 45.7 square miles. Standard error of prediction for the regression equations ranged from 34 to 62 percent.\r\n\r\nPeak-discharge data collected through water year 1988, geographic information system (GIS) technology, and generalized least-squares regression were used in the analyses. The use of GIS seems to be a more flexible and consistent means of defining and calculating basin and climatic characteristics than using manual methods. Standard errors of estimate for the regression equations in this report are an average of 8 percent less than those published in previous studies.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/wri944052","usgsCitation":"Wong, M.F., 1994, Estimation of Magnitude and Frequency of Floods for Streams on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 94-4052, iv, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri944052.","productDescription":"iv, 37 p.","costCenters":[{"id":525,"text":"Pacific Islands Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":123730,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4052/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":59336,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1994/4052/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f2e4b07f02db5eef26","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wong, Michael F.","contributorId":43815,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wong","given":"Michael","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":203481,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Surficial dune, beach, and glacial lacustrine sands compose an extensive surficial aquifer. The underlying drift contains three major confined sand aquifers. Potentiometric and hydrochemical data are consistent with a conceptual model in which regional and intermediate flow systems, recharged in end moraines south of the dune-beach complexes, discharge into Lake Michigan and the Great Marsh by upward leakage through unconsolidated sediments. Local flow systems in the surficial aquifer, recharged in the major dune-beach complexes, discharge into streams, ditches, and ponded areas in the adjacent interdunal wetlands. Shallow ground water discharges directly into Lake Michigan only north of a water-table divide that underlies the dune-beach complex along the shoreline. The position of ground-water seepage faces is affected by transient water-table mounds observed in the dune-beach complexes at the margins of wetlands. Substantial recharge to the dune complexes probably occurs near these dune-wetland margins. In the dune-beach complexes and intradunal wetlands, the shallow ground and wetland waters are dilute calcium bicarbonate and calcium bicarbonate sulfate types. More mineralized bicarbonate water types having variable proportions of calcium, magnesium, and sodium are found in interior parts of the Great Marsh because this area is probably a discharge zone for the regional and intermediate flow systems.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nUSGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr92139","usgsCitation":"Shedlock, R.J., Cohen, D., Imbrigiotta, T., and Thompson, T., 1994, Hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of dunes and wetlands along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 92-139, vi, 85 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr92139.","productDescription":"vi, 85 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":149333,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1992/0139/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46387,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1992/0139/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4be4b07f02db62540b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Shedlock, Robert J. rjshedlo@usgs.gov","contributorId":2616,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Shedlock","given":"Robert","email":"rjshedlo@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":175546,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cohen, D.A.","contributorId":17628,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cohen","given":"D.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175547,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Imbrigiotta, T.E. 0000-0003-1716-4768","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1716-4768","contributorId":86355,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Imbrigiotta","given":"T.E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175549,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Thompson, T.A.","contributorId":73226,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"T.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":175548,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

Data were collected monthly from April 1987-August l990; these data were supplemented with data collected during special events, including high and low flows. Each fixed station represents a cross section at which the transport of selected dissolved and suspended materials can be computed. Samples collected monthly and during special events were analyzed for concentrations of major ions, nutrients, trace elements, organic carbon, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediment, and other constituents. Field measurements of water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, and indicator bacteria also were made at each site. Samples of suspended sediment were analyzed for concentrations of major ions and trace elements. In addition, samples were analyzed seasonally for concentrations of antimony, bromide, molybdenum, and the radionuclides gross alpha and gross beta.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nU.S. Geological Survey, Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr91175","usgsCitation":"Sullivan, D.J., and Blanchard, S.F., 1994, Surface-water-quality assessment of the upper Illinois River Basin in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin; fixed-station network and selected water-quality data for April 1987-September 1990: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 91-175, v, 213 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr91175.","productDescription":"v, 213 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":154441,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1991/0175/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":50647,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1991/0175/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae5e4b07f02db68a3f7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sullivan, Daniel J. 0000-0003-2705-3738 djsulliv@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2705-3738","contributorId":1703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sullivan","given":"Daniel","email":"djsulliv@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":677,"text":"Wisconsin Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":183762,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blanchard, Stephen F.","contributorId":54966,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blanchard","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":183763,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The research area is located in the Anoka Sand Plain about 5 kilometers southwest of Princeton, Minnesota. The ground-water-quality monitoring network within and immediately surrounding the research area consists of 29 observation wells and 22 multiport wells. Thirteen observation wells are also located outside the research area. The primary objectives of research by the U.S. Geological Survey at the Princeton Management Systems Evaluation Area are to: (1) determine the relation of the spatial and temporal distribution of agricultural chemicals in ground water to recharge, topography, and subsurface heterogeneities; and (2) determine the effects of the modified and prevailing farming systems on ground-water quality. This report presents geologic logs and water-quality data used to characterize the Princeton Management Systems Evaluation Area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Mounds View, MN","doi":"10.3133/ofr94337","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the University of Minnesota Department of Soil Science, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency","usgsCitation":"Delin, G., Landon, M., Lamb, J., and Anderson, J.L., 1994, Hydrogeologic and water-quality data used to characterize the Management Systems Evaluation Area near Princeton, Minnesota, 1991: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-337, iii, 42 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94337.","productDescription":"iii, 42 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":392,"text":"Minnesota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":149307,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0337/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46380,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0337/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Minnesota","city":"Princeton","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93.62557411193848,\n              45.52306687976779\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.62557411193848,\n              45.532086387683606\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.61398696899414,\n              45.532086387683606\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.61398696899414,\n              45.52306687976779\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.62557411193848,\n              45.52306687976779\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a50e4b07f02db628c4f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Delin, G. Well F453-63, at the U.S. Geological Survey Toxic-Substances Hydrology research site located on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, was selected because it was known that the screen penetrated both the oxic and anoxic zones of the sewage plume from the Otis Air Base sewage-disposal sand beds. The experiment was conducted on August 12, 1992. Well F453-63 was sampled over time as it was pumped continuously, and three multilevel samplers were used to document the vertical distribution of selected chemicals in the ground water in the immediate vicinity of the well. All water samples obtained during the experiment were analyzed in the field for specific conductance and pH. The samples were subsequently analyzed for concentrations of ferrous iron (Fe+2), boron, calcium, chloride, iron (Fe total), phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, manganese, sodium, zinc, and nitrogen species, including nitrous oxide, ammonium, nitrite and nitrate. The results of these chemical analyses along with appropriate physical measurements of the site and aquifer material are documented in this data report.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/ofr94384","usgsCitation":"Reilly, T.E., 1994, Hydrologic and chemical data from an experiment to examine temporal variability in water samples from screened wells on Cape Cod, Massachusetts: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-384, vi, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94384.","productDescription":"vi, 34 p.","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":149335,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0384/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46389,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0384/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Cape Cod","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.9552001953125,\n              41.541477666790286\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.840087890625,\n              41.541477666790286\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.840087890625,\n              42.15933157601718\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.9552001953125,\n              42.15933157601718\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.9552001953125,\n              41.541477666790286\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a29e4b07f02db6118c8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reilly, Thomas E. tereilly@usgs.gov","contributorId":1660,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reilly","given":"Thomas","email":"tereilly@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":175554,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

In Indiana, several major floods have occurred during this century. Flooding can occur at any time in any geographic area in Indiana. The degree of flooding can vary from a minor inconvenience to major flooding that results in loss of life and extensive damage. In this study, the existing streamflow-gaging networks in Indiana are evaluated on the basis of meeting flood-data needs of various governmental agencies.</p>\n<p>The study area (Indiana and adjacent areas in Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio) was divided into 12 basins and 1 urban area. Each basin and the Indianapolis area were analyzed on the basis of hydrologic characteristics, flood potential, and availability and benefits of real-time data. A set of guidelines for evaluating an existing streamflow- gaging station without telemetry was developed so quantitative comparisons could be made between stations. The guidelines include station-site characteristics of drainage area, peak discharge, population of the nearby area, and needs of government agencies for planning and flood-warning management. From the analyses, determinations were made concerning modifications or additions to the networks to improve flood-data collection and transmission. These determinations were discussed at interagency meetings to ensure agreement.</p>\n<p>The study results indicate that installation of streamflow-gaging stations at 15 new sites would improve collection of flood data. Instrumenting the 15 new sites plus 26 existing streamflow-gaging stations with telemetry, preferably data-collection platforms with satellite transmitters, would improve transmission of data to users of the information.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Indianapolis, IN","doi":"10.3133/wri914051","collaboration":"Indidana Department of Natural The mapping is part of the effort to produce a new bedrock geologic map of Vermont through the collection of field data at a scale of 1:24,000. The focus of my part of the project is to map and interpret the \"New Hampshire sequence\" rocks (White and Jahns, 1950) that crop out in Vermont and their relationship to those of the \"Vermont sequence\", or the Connecticut Valley trough, west of the Monroe line, here a fault (Hatch, 1988a). The work is a continuation of mapping just initiated by N.L. Hatch, Jr., prior to his death in 1991. This particular map area was chosen as the place to initiate this study because it includes one of the largest areas of the New Hampshire sequence in Vermont, because it is adjacent to and on strike with the Littleton-Moosilauke area in New Hampshire that includes the type area of most of the units of the New Hampshire sequence (Billings, 1935, 1937), and because the Connecticut River here runs roughly east to west across the regional strike and might provide a good stratigraphic section across the rocks under study. The mapping showed that no bedrock is exposed along either bank of the Connecticut River across most of the area, but there are excellent exposures in the spillways of two large dams, Moore Dam on the east and Comerford Dam on the west (about 100 m west of the Lower Waterford quadrangle), along Interstate Highway 93 (1-93), and adequate exposures in the hills above the river. My mapping was mostly in the Vermont parts of the Littleton 15-minute quadrangle but included some work in the Barnett 7 1/2 x 15-minute quadrangle to the west and a zone along the New Hampshire side of the Connecticut River that included Albee Hill, Partridge Lake, Highland Croft farm, the former Fitch farm, and the outskirts of Littleton. The Vermont mapping is thus tied to the classic Littleton-Moosilauke area of Billings (1937) and the fossiliferous Fitch and Littleton Formations in their type areas.</p>","conferenceTitle":"U.S. Geological Survey","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr94410","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of Vermont","usgsCitation":"Rankin, D., 1994, Preliminary bedrock geologic map of parts of the Lower Waterford, Concord, Littleton, and Miles Pond 7 1/2-minute quadrangles, Vermont and New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-410, Report: 28 p.; 3 Plates: 31.29 x 33.48 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94410.","productDescription":"Report: 28 p.; 3 Plates: 31.29 x 33.48 inches or smaller","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":310022,"rank":303,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0410/plate-3.pdf","text":"Plate 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310021,"rank":302,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0410/plate-2.pdf","text":"Plate 2","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":310020,"rank":301,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0410/plate-1.pdf","text":"Plate 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":60004,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0410/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":161302,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0410/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":397760,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_19306.htm"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"New Hampshire, Vermont","otherGeospatial":"Lower Waterford, Concord, Littleton, and Miles Pond 7 1/2-minute quadrangles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -72,\n              44.31\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.792,\n              44.31\n            ],\n            [\n              -71.792,\n              44.455\n            ],\n            [\n              -72,\n              44.455\n            ],\n            [\n              -72,\n              44.31\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c99b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rankin, Douglas W. dwrankin@usgs.gov","contributorId":1770,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rankin","given":"Douglas W.","email":"dwrankin@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":206970,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Water-quality data were obtained periodically at 16 stations during October 1992 through September 1993 (water year 1993); daily suspended-sediment data were obtained at six of these stations. Bed-sediment and biological data were obtained at 11 stations in August 1993. Sampling stations were located on the Clark Fork and major tributaries. The primary constituents analyzed were trace elements associated with mine tailings from historic mining and smelting activities. Water-quality data include concentra- tions of major ions, trace elements, and suspended sediment in samples collected periodically during water year 1993. A statistical summary of water- quality data is provided for the period of record at each station since 1985. Daily values of streamflow, suspended-sediment concentration, and suspended-sediment discharge are given for six stations. One of the goals of PRISM is to produce time-slice reconstructions of intervals of warmer than modern climate within the Pliocene Epoch. The first of these was chosen to be at 3.0 Ma (time scale of Berggren et al., 1985) and is published in Global and Planetary Change (Dowsett et al., 1994). This document contains the actual data sets and a brief explanation of how they were constructed. For paleoenvironmental interpretations and discussion of each data set, see Dowsett et al., in press. The data sets includes sea level, land ice distribution, vegetation or land cover, sea surface temperature and sea-ice cover matrices. \r\nThis reconstruction of Middle Pliocene climate is organized as a series of datasets representing different environmental attributes. The data sets are designed for use with the GISS Model II atmospheric general circulation model (GCM) using an 8?x10? resolution (Hansen et al., 1983). The first step in documenting the Pliocene climate involves assigning an appropriate fraction of land versus ocean to each grid box. Following grid cell by grid cell, land versus ocean allocations, winter and summer sea ice coverage of ocean areas are assigned and then winter and summer sea surface temperatures are assigned to open ocean areas. Average land ice cover is recorded for land areas and then land areas not covered by ice are assigned proportions of six vegetation or land cover categories modified from Hansen et al. (1983).","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr94281","usgsCitation":"Barron, J.A., Cronin, T.M., Dowsett, H.J., Fleming, F.R., Holtz, T.R., Ishman, S.E., Poore, R.Z., Thompson, R.S., and Willard, D.A., 1994, PRISM 8 degrees X 10 degrees North Hemisphere paleoclimate reconstruction; digital data (Version 1.0): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-281, 23 p. :ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr94281.","productDescription":"23 p. :ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":1023,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/of94-281/","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":150140,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0281/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":46773,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0281/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"edition":"Version 1.0","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db689e13","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barron, John A. 0000-0002-9309-1145 jbarron@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9309-1145","contributorId":2222,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barron","given":"John","email":"jbarron@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":617,"text":"Volcano Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":176936,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Cronin, Thomas M. 0000-0002-2643-0979 tcronin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2643-0979","contributorId":2579,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cronin","given":"Thomas","email":"tcronin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":40020,"text":"Florence Bascom Geoscience Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":176937,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dowsett, Harry J. 0000-0003-1983-7524 hdowsett@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1983-7524","contributorId":949,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dowsett","given":"Harry","email":"hdowsett@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[{"id":40020,"text":"Florence Bascom Geoscience Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":243,"text":"Eastern Geology and Paleoclimate Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":176934,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Fleming, Farley R.","contributorId":36577,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fleming","given":"Farley","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":176938,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4},{"text":"Holtz, Thomas R. Shallow ground water beneath farm fields has been enriched in stable isotopes and salts by partial evaporation from the shallow water table and is being displaced by irrigation, drainage, and regional ground-water flow. Ground-water flow is primarily downward in the study area but can flow upward in some down- slope areas. Transitional areas exist between the downward and upward flow zones, where ground water can move substantial horizontal distances (0.3 to 3.6 kilometers) and can require 10 to 90 years to reach the downslope drainage systems. Simulation of ground-water flow to drainage systems indicates that regional ground water contributes to about 11 percent of annual drainflow. Selenium concentrations in ground water and drainwater are affected by geologic source materials, partial evaporation from a shallow water table, drainage-system, and regional ground-water flow. Temporal variability in drainflow quality is affected in part by the distribution of chemical constituents in ground water and the flow paths to the drainage systems. The mass flux of selenium in drainflows, or load, generally is proportional to flow, and reductions in drainflow quantity should reduce selenium loads over the short-term. Uncertain changes in the distribution of ground-water quality make future changes in drainflow quality difficult to quantify.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Sacramento, CA","doi":"10.3133/ofr9472","usgsCitation":"Fio, J.L., and Leighton, D.A., 1994, Effects of ground-water chemistry and flow on quality of drainflow in the western San Joaquin Valley, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 94-72, v, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr9472.","productDescription":"v, 28 p.","numberOfPages":"33","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151334,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0072/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":48301,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1994/0072/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2ee4b07f02db615303","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fio, John L.","contributorId":77543,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fio","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179945,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Leighton, David A.","contributorId":95493,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leighton","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":179946,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Bands 2, 3,4, and 5 from a TM image for August 10,1991, were classified using the maximum-likelihood, unsupervised-classification procedure to identify the areas of crops irrigated in the two counties. Detailed vegetation distribution maps of two calibration sites in the study area, and boundaries of the areas probably irrigated in 1991, were used to interpret the results and to separate probable irrigated areas by county from the rest of the image.</p>\n<p>Areas calculated for irrigated crops were 31,000 acres for Uvalde County, about 35 percent less than the area calculated using Landsat multispectral scanner (MSS) data in 1989, and 20,000 acres for Medina County, about 13 percent less than in 1989, a total decrease of about 28 percent for the two counties. Saturated thicknesses of stratified drift within the study area are locally greater than 400 feet but generally are less. Transmissivities 1ocally exceeds 4,000 feet squared per day but are generally much less. The 20.8 square mile, or 1.8 percent, of the study area identified as having transmissivity greater than 1,000 feet squared per day represents a valuable resource. The geohydrology of stratified- drift aquifers was investigated by focusing on basic aquifer properties, including aquifer boundaries; recharge, discharge, and direction of ground-water flow; saturated thickness and storage; and transmissivity. Surficial geologic mapping assisted in the determination of aquifer boundaries. Data from more than 2,300 wells, test borings, and springs were used to produce maps of water-table altitude, saturated thickness, and transmissivity of-stratified drift. Seismic-refraction profiles were completed at 29 locations in the study area. These profiles aided in the construction of the water-table and saturated-thickness maps. Seismic- reflection data were also collected along 60 miles of the Connecticut River. A stratified-drift aquifer in southern Croydon and northern Newport was analyzed for aquifer yield using transient simulations and a two-dimensional, finite-difference ground-water-flow model. The objective was to estimate the yield after a 180-day period of pumping. Two hypothetical wells were pumped at 1.0 Mgal/d and 0.5 Mgal/d for 180 days respectively. The amount of water available for infiltration was the limiting factor. Results of analysis of water samples from 22 wells and 8 spring show that, with some exceptions, water in the stratified-drift aquifer generally meets the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's primary and secondary drinking-water regulations.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Dept. of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey ;\r\nUSGS Earth Science Information Center, Open-File Reports Section [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/wri924013","usgsCitation":"Moore, R.B., Johnson, C., and Douglas, E., 1994, Geohydrology and water quality of stratified-drift aquifers in the lower Connecticut River basin, southwestern New Hampshire: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4013, 1 v.
