Sedimentology includes the \nfive fundamental processes defined by the term sediaentation \n--weathering, erosion, transportation, deposition and \ndiagenesis. \nSedimentology shares with geomorphology the study of \nthe surface features of the earth. Sedimentology also \nshares with hydrology the study of river.--channels. River \nchannels are formed in part or in total as a result of \nflowing water and sediment transport, commonly called the \n\"work of the rivers.\" \nThis survey of published literature was made to aid in \narriving at definitions which would be acceptable to, and \nrepresentative of, a majority of professional personnel \nactively engaged in laboratory and field investigations \nrelated to the \"work of the river.\" The definitions in this \nlist are intended to explain the terms used in studies of \nfluvial sediment and channel morphology. No set of \ndefinitions can expect universal acceptance, however, i t is \nhoped that this compilation will be considered a summary \nand synthesis of present and past usage and that it will \nserve as a starting point for future usage. \nMultiple references are cited from textbooks, glossaries and dictionaries, scientific journals and u.s. Government \npublications. To obtain a mutual understanding and enhance \nprecision, many of the proposed definitions are a composite \nof those selected from papers or reports covering research \nstudies and field investigations. \n\nA draft of this glossary has been reviewed by a group of \ninterested personnel. The results of this review have been \ncarefully considered and the originally-suggested definitions \nhave been revised accordingly, resulting in the present \ncompilation. \nR. G. With increasing frequency, the hydrologist\nfinds it necessary to study the literature of the soil mechanics and\nsoil physics disciplines for assistance in the solution of hydrologic\nproblems. Because of the inter-relation between hydrology and soil\nmechanics and soil physics, hydrologists also are preparing an increasing\nnumber of technical papers ·for use by these two disciplines.\nTo permit the hydrologist to better understand specialized literature,\nas well as to assist him in preparing papers for these disciplines,\nthis glossary of soil mechanics and soil physics nomenclature was prepared.\nIt is a compilation from standards, dictionaries, and glossaries published\nby technical societies, and from reports by selected authorities in the\nfields of soil mechanics and soil physics. The variety of symbols and\ndefinitions presented for many of the terms demonstrates the difficulty\nthat has been encountered over the years in reaching agreement on such a\nsubject as nomenclature. Both old and new definitions and symbols are\npresented to assist the hydrologist in reading literature. Whenever\npossible the more recent symbols and nomenclature should be used by the\nhydrologist in writing papers for soil mechanics or soil physics audiences.\nWhen the hydrologist finds it necessary to use symbols or terms not included\nin the present list, he should try to select those not in conflict with the\nrecent systems presented in this report.\nSymbols are listed in alphabetical order to assist readers in finding\nthe term represented by a given symbol. The pre-Tertiary rocks consist mainly of argillites, schists, limestones, and intrusive igneous rocks, while the Tertiary rocks consist mainly of felsic and mafic volcanic tuffs, lava flows and breccias, and fluviolacustrine deposits. Quaternary rocks include terrace gravels of Pleistocene and Recent age, and stream-valley alluvium of Recent age. The rock units most widely exposed along the valley are the fluviolacustrine deposits of Miocene and Pliocene(?) age, which extend to depths of as much as a thousand feet below the valley floor, and the pre-Tertiary rocks.</p><p>Most of the rocks that underlie the valley are of relatively low permeability and yield only small to moderate quantities of water (generally less than 50 gpm) to wells. The fluviolacustrine deposits contain scattered lenses of relatively permeable sand and gravel, hut the unit as a whole is mainly silt and clay of low permeability. Two prospective irrigation wells in the area penetrated these deposits but were abandoned because of insufficient yield.</p><p>Perhaps the most permeable rock unit in the area is the Columbia River Basalt of Miocene and Pliocene(?) age. It is exposed extensively west of the main valley, but apparently occurs only' as discontinuous lenses beneath the valley floor.</p><p>Chemical analyses of water from seven wells in the area indicate that the ground waters have relatively large concentrations of dis-. solved mineral constituents. Water from two of the wells had excessive concentrations of boron and high sodium and salinity hazards with respect to use for irrigation.</p><p>Perhaps the most favorable site for a test irrigation well is about 8 to 10 miles east of Hereford, where the Columbia River Basalt apparently extends beneath, and is intercalated with, the fluviolacustrine The flood-producing storm was of the warm type, with precipitation falling as rain at altitudes as high as 8,000 feet. The heavy precipitation, totaling as much as 20 inches or more in the Sierra Nevada, fell on frozen ground or on the sparse snowpack that existed in the higher altitudes. The response of runoff to rainfall was dramatic, as streams throughout the area rose rapidly. Hardest hit were the basins of the American, Yuba, and Truckee Rivers, where flood peaks either reached record-breaking heights or rivalled the discharges attained in the memorable floods of November 1950 and December 1955. Because of the relatively short duration of the storm, the volume of flood flow in 1963 was not outstanding. Ten deaths were attributed to the storm or flood. Preliminary estimates indicate damage in excess of $16 million in foothill and valley areas, but no attempt has yet been made to assess the heavy damage to highways and drainage structures in the mountain areas. The U. S. Army, Corps of Engineirs estimates that its operation of flood-control facilities prevented additional damage of $236 million. Land slopes are steep and runoff from rainstorms flows rapidly to the sea in the numerous, short, steep stream courses. During most dry seasons only a few streams maintain flow along any part of their course. Guinea Gut, the only stream in St. John known to have had continual flow during the first half of 1963, had a minimum flow of 3,500 gallons per day (gpd). The flow of Turpentine Run, the largest stream in St. Thomas, dropped to 15,000 gpd during the same period, and the flow of River Gut, the largest stream in St. Croix, dropped to about 70,000 gpd. In past years the flow of the streams has been less at times; in fact, Turpentine Run reportedly did not flow during part of 1923 and probably it has been dry at times since then. The streams thus are not reliable sources of large water supplies unless storage is provided. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 201 wells, in 9 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements, covering the period 1941 through 1955, have been published in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers (19)43-1957); those for 1:56 through 1961 have been released locally in duplicated form (Muir and Merritt, 1957; Evenson 1950; Miller, 1959; Muir, Merritt, and Miller, 1960; Merritt, 1961; and Muir, 1962). LaRocque, Jr., and others (1950) contains tabulated descriptions of 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the several ground-water basins of the county. The same publication also contains many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.</p><p>Comprehensive reports on the geology and and ground-water resources of the Santa. Ynez River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951, and Wilson, 1959), the south-coast basin (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyvma Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1467, 1108, 1000, and 1110-B, respectively. A similar report on the San Antonio Creek Valley is in preparation. A report on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity of the Santa Ynez River Valley (Troxell and Wilson, 1952) was released to the open file in October 1952.</p><p>In addition to the water-level measurements made by the Geological Survey in 1962, measurements made by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District are included in this report.
