S. Geological Survey at the surface over the proposed Straight Creek tunnel. The results are interpreted and predictions are made, based primarily on statistical analyses, as to the probable geologic conditions at the depth of the tunnel, and how these conditions may influence the engineering design and construction of the tunnel. It is expected that continued geologic and geophysical research by the Geological Survey, and we hope by others also, during progress of the tunnel will result in an evaluation of the methods here About 55,000 acre-feet per year comes from Little Beaver Creek basin, a tributary drainage of 195 square miles.\r\nYearly streamflow is highly variable. The discharge of Little Beaver Creek near Duncan during 13-year period of record (water years 1949-61) has ranged from 86,530 acre-feet in calendar year 1957 to 4,880 acre-feet in 1956, a ratio of almost 18 to 1.\r\n\r\nHighest runoff within a year tends to occur in the spring months of May and June, a 2-month period that, on the average, accounts for more than half of the annual discharge of Little Beaver Creek near Duncan. The average monthly runoff during record was lowest in January. Variation in daily streamflow is such that while the average discharge for the 13-year period of record was 50.1 cfs (cubic feet per second), the daily discharge was more than 6 cfs only about half of the time. There was no flow at the site 19 percent of the time during the period.\r\n\r\nSome base runoff usually exists in the headwaters of Beaver and Little Beaver Creeks, and in the lower reaches of Beaver Creek. Low flow in Cow Creek tends to be sustained by waste water from Duncan, where water use in 1961 averaged 4 million gallons per day. In the remainder of the basin, periods of no flow occur in most years.\r\n\r\nThe surface water of Beaver Creek basin is very hard but in general is usable for municipal, agricultural and industrial purposes. The chemical character of the water is predominantly a calcium, magnesium bicarbonate type of water in the lower three quarters of the basin, except in Cow Creek where oil-field brines induce a distinct sodium, calcium chloride characteristic at low and medium flows. A calcium sulfate type of water occurs in most of the northern part of the basin except in headwater areas underlain by the Rush Springs Sandstone, where quality is similar to that in the lower basin.\r\n\r\nThe report gives an estimate of the average discharge at several sites in Beaver Creek basin for a 19-year base period, October 1937 to September 1956. Duration curves of daily discharge for Little Beaver Creek near Duncan and Beaver Creek near Waurika are shown for the period of record. Monthly and annual discharge records for these gaging stations are presented. The results of 52 discharge measurements at 17 other sites in the basin are tabulated, with 5 groups being plotted as discharge profiles. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 190 wells, in 9 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements, covering the period 1941 through 1955, have been published in U. S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers (1943-1957); those for 1956 through 1960 have been released locally in duplicated form (Muir and Merritt, 1957; Evenson, 1958; Miller, 1959; Muir, Merritt, and Miller, 1960; and Merritt, 1961). LaRocque, Jr., and others (1950) contains tabulated descriptions of 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the several ground-water basins of the county. The same publication also contains many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.</p><p>Comprehensive reports on the geology and ground-water resources of the Santa Ynez River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951, and Wilson, 1959), the south-coast basins (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyama Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1467, 1108, 1000, and 1110-B, respectively. A similar report on the San Antonio Creek Valley is in preparation. A report on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity of the Santa Ynez River valley (Troxell and Wilson, 1952) was released to the open file on October 1952.</p><p>In addition to the water-level measurements made by the Geological Survey in 1961, measurements made by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District are included in this report. Not included in this report are miscellaneous measurements made by the U. S. A detailed investigation of the conditions for high sensitivity and stability at lowest concentration levels of rhenium is presented as well as the behavior of twenty-six ions. The method is applied to the determination of some tenths of a part per million or more of rhenium in a milligram aliquot of mineralized rocks, mixtures of molybdenite and rocks, and molybdenite concentrates. The practical quantity limit of detection is 2 x 10<sup>-10</sup> gram of rhenium. Samples are decomposed with a mixture of calcium oxide, calcium chloride, and magnesium oxide. On leaching, the constituents of the sample are precipitated either as calcium salts or as hydroxides except for rhenium and a small amount of molybdenum which pass into the filtrate. Residual molybdenum is removed extraction with 8-quinolinol in chloroform.
