Its surface is a flat to gently rolling plain, standing about 1,500 to 3,500 feet above sea level and locally studded by a few high buttes. The sedimentary sequence that fills the basin has a maximum thickness of about 16,700 feet and rests on Precambrian metamorphic rocks at depths of 500 to 13,900 feet below sea level. It contains rocks of every geologic system, from Cambrian to Quaternary. Rocks of Middle Cambrian through Middle Ordovician age are largely shale and sandstone, as much as 1,200 feet thick; rocks of Late Ordovician through Pennsylvanian age are largely limestone and dolomite, as much as 7,500 feet thick; and rocks of Permian through Tertiary age are predominantly shale and siltstone, as much as 8,000 feet thick. Pleistocene glacial drift mantles the northern and eastern parts of the area. Rocks of the Williston basin are gently folded and regional dips are 1? or less from the margins to the basin center. Dips on the flanks of the major anticlinal folds, the Nesson and cedar Creek anticlines and the Poplar and Bowdoin domes, generally are about 1? to 3? except on the steep west limb of the Cedar Creek anticline. The basin was shaped by Laramide orogeny during latest Cretaceous and early Tertiary time. Most of the present structural features, however, were initiated during the Precambrian and reactivated by several subsequent orogenies, of which the latest was the Laramide. The most important mineral resource of the area is oil, which is produced predominantly from the Paleozoic carbonate sequence and largely on three of the major anticlinal folds, and lignite, which is present near the surface in Paleocene rocks. \r\n\r\nThe subsurface disposal of radioactive wastes at some places in the Williston basin appears to be geographically and geologically feasible. Many sites, at which large quantities of wastes might be injected with minimal danger of contamination of fresh-water aquifers and-oil-producing strata, are available.. To this end, topographic maps must show accurate classification as well as a consistent pattern of the stream network.</p><p>A recent study in Georgia has developed two photo-interpretive keys which permit accurate drainage classification during the normal stereo-compilation procedures in map-making. The study was made in the Tired Creek basin in the Coastal Plain, and in the Yellow River basin in the Piedmont Province.</p><p>In the Tired Creek basin, the perennial stream channels were associated with blackgum swamps which showed as a characteristic pattern on the aerial photographs of the area. Although the areas were classed as evergreen forest on specially-compiled vegetation maps without field checking, the classification was relatively consistent, indicating that the perennial channels could be identified accurately within the basin.</p><p>In the Yellow River basin origins of perennial flow were found in valleys having concave-upward profiles. Valleys with convex-upward profiles remained ephemeral up to their juncture with a larger stream. Field checks indicated better than 80 percent accuracy in delineating these points of origin of perennial flow through stereoscopic viewing of the aerial photographs of the area. Vegetative difference above and below the origins of perennial flow were to subtle to be readily discerned on the photographs. Errors in classifying vegetation on special maps were attributed mainly to inexperience and to faulty criteria for for classification.</p><p>Proposals are presented to improve portrayal of both drainage and vegetation on topographic maps. The proposed drainage criteria suggest portrayal of all perennial streams as well as ephemeral drainage below the first branching. In the district, important deposits of talc and zinc and minor deposits of lead are mined from a northeast trending belt of marble. Deposits of pyrite that were prospected and mined during and before World War I occur in schists in the vicinity of Pyrites and Antwerp villages. Fifteen to 50 miles east-southeast is the St. Lawrence County magnetite district, which contains commercially important magnetite deposits.<br></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The Ul2e.04 tunnel was driven about S. 15? W. in zeolitic tuff of subunits E and F of Tunnel Bed W near the top of the lower member of the Indian Trail Formation (upper Miocene or lower Pliocene). Dolomite of Paleozoic age lies about 915 feet below the end of the tunnel; vertical cover over the end of the tunnel to the surface of Rainier Mesa is about 1,390 feet. The tuffs in the tunnel strike almost north-south and dip to the west. There are several normal northwest-trending faults with vertical to steep dips and small displacements. The predominant joint set strikes northwest and dips mostly vertically or steeply to the northeast. \r\n\r\nPetrographically and chemically the tuffs in the U12e.04 tunnel are similar to other tuffs of the Indian Trail Formation from the Nevada Test Site, The tuffs in the tunnel have an average porosity of 38.6 percent, dry bulk density of 1.46 g/cc (grams per cubic centimeter), grain density of 2.38 g/cc, water content of 20.7 percent by weight. \r\n\r\nShore hardness of 25.1, and unconfined compressive strength of 4,400 psi (pounds per square inch).
