Seven hundred and seven gravity stations were established between latitudes 42°15'N and 44°30'N between longitudes 111°30'W and 114°30'W. Three hundred and twenty-five of these stations were located in 2,700 square miles of the eastern part with an average density of one station per 8.3 square miles. The remaining 9,300 square miles were covered by several lines, with an average lineal density of one station per 2.0 miles. A simple-Bouguer gravity contour map has been made of the area by standard methods. The low gravity relief and broad high of the eastern Snake River Plain strongly contrasts with the high amplitude anomalies of the western plain. The major anomalies of the eastern plain consist of 1) a broad high, which is an extension of the large gravity highs of the western plain, 2) a set of elongated alternating lows and highs that trend normal to the axis of the eastern plain, 3) a series of small, local highs on the boundary of the plain, and 4) a prominent low centered over Mud Lake in the northern part of the surveyed area. Flood data have been used to define flood-frequency curves applicable to the State.</p><p>Composite frequency curves have been defined showing the relation of the mean annual flood to floods having recurrence intervals of 1. 2 to 50 years. Other curves express the relation of the mean annual flood to drainage basin characteristics. For the northern part of the State, it was found that the slope of the composite frequency curve varies with drainage area size, and an adjustment curve was drawn for use in conjunction with the composite curve for this area.</p><p>By combining data from the composite and mean annual flood curves a flood-frequency curve may be drawn for any stream in Arkansas, not materially affected by works of man, within the limits of drainage area and recurrence interval defined by base data.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Fort Smith, On the main stems of the Schuylkill, Delaware, Susquehanna, and Chemung Rivers the magnitude of floods can be determined for frequencies up to 100 years.</p>\n<p>Six composite frequency curves show the relation of the mean annual flood to floods having recurrence interval up to 50 to 100 years. Curves for fourteen hydrologic areas show the variation of mean annual flood with drainage area. This report explains how to select the proper curves for any chosen point in the State and how to compute a flood-frequency curve for that point.</p>\n<p>A tabulation of peak gage heights and discharges for most gaging stations in the State is included. In general, the tabulations contain all peaks above a specific base discharge, although for some stations only annual peaks are shown.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The tributaries head at an altitude as high as 1,400 feet and the mouth of Beaver Creek is at an altitude of 804 feet. Alluvial material has been deposited along all the major streams in the basin. The alluvium contains a high percentage of clay and fine sand and ranges in thickness from a few inches to 50 feet.\r\nReplenishment of water in the alluvium is from precipitation, lateral seepage and runoff from adjoining areas, and infiltration from the streams during high flows.\r\n\r\nThe town of Ryan and Waurika have constructed municipal water-supply wells topping the alluvium and residents of the town of Sugden have private wells topping the alluvium. The basin is typical of southwestern Oklahoma with nearly level plains broken by gentle rolling hills and low escarpments, except for the extreme southern part, where seven granite and gabbroic knobs and ridges of the Wichita Mountains protrude. The alluvium averages 40 feet in thickness and is restricted to the flood plain of Elk Creek and its major tributaries. The upper part of the alluvium is predominantly silt and clay. The lower part is predominantly very fine to medium sand. The flood plain is bounded by bedrock of Permian age except in T. 5 N. where it is bounded also by sporadic knobs and ridges composed of Precambrian rocks. Recharge to the alluvium is principally through infiltration of precipitation and surface runoff from adjacent highlands, and through percolation from the Quartermaster Formation in the northern part of the basin. Discharge is principally by seepage into the creek and transpiration by vegetation. Discharge by pumpage is small, principally for domestic and stock supply. Ground water can be obtained in varying amounts from the red beds of Permian age, but yields of wells are small and the water is of poor quality at most places.\r\nRoosevelt's municipal water needs are supplied from 9 wells, 2 miles west of town (fig. 1). Eight of these wells obtain water from the red beds. The other well taps an alluvial deposit about 30 feet in thickness. It was reported that test drilling for the town of Roosevelt found this deposit to be 25 to 30 feet in thickness with only the lower few feet saturated.
