Parts of the aquifer have been overdeveloped in recent years, however, and at the present time great emphasis is being placed on proper location, development, and use of ground-water supplies. The present trend of industrial growth is to the southwest of the city in the undeveloped area along the Ohio River, where the yields to individual wells are higher and relatively large supplies can be developed. Six hundred and seventy-two gravity stations were established between latitudes 42?30\u0019N and 43?30\u0019N and between longitudes 115?15\u0019W and 116?15\u0019W at an average density of one station per 5.4 square miles. The data were reduced to simple-Bouguer gravity by standard methods and plotted as a gravity contour map.\r\n\r\nThree major anomalies were defined by the survey; two 30-mile long, en echelon gravity highs with amplitudes of 15 and 50 milligals, and one elongated gravity low with an amplitude of -10 milligals. A two-dimensional graticule analysis suggests that the highs are caused by vertical slabs of dense rock (probably basalt), the larges about 4 miles wide, about 30 miles long, and extending from about 1,000 feet (0.3 kilometer) below sea level to about 66,000 feet (20 kilometers) below sea level. A possible geological interpretation is that the vertical slabs are large, en echelon, basalt-filled fissures or zones of fissures in the earth\u0019s crust. The outflow from the lake, based on limited streamflow records varies from less than 60 cfs to well over 15,000 cfs, with an annual flow in 1960 of 3196 cfs or 2,320,000 acre-feet. With this pronounced variation in flow, regulation by storage is necessary for power development. The requisite storage can be developed by drawing the lake below its natural level. For complete regulation, a drawdown of 78 feet would be required. Regulation of 90 percent of mean flow can be accomplished with a drawdown of 67 feet. Construction of a dam at or near the lake outlet is not considered feasible. The most likely site for a powerhouse appears to be in the McArthur River Valley where a mean head of as much as 1004 feet could be utilized which with a mean flow of 3196 cfs could develop 218,000 kw. Site 1 at Point Martin is underlain by terrace gravel overlying sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age. The site is protected from south- east storms but not from southwest storms. Longshore transport of sediments is to the west during high tides and either lacking or to the east during low tides. The 60-foot offshore contour is within 1.5 miles of the site and the 30-foot offshore contour is within 0.4 mile. \r\n\r\nSite 2 at Palm Point is underlain by beach gravel, terrace gravel, and muskeg deposits that overlie Tertiary sedimentary rocks. The site is protected from southwest storms but exposed to southeast storms, which are the major ones in the Point Whitshed-Cape Yakataga area. The beach at this site is being eroded actively and the sediments are carried offshore by waves that break at right angles to the beach. The 60-foot offshore contour lies within 2 miles of the site area; the 30-foot offshore contour is within 0.3 miles. \r\n\r\nSite 3 at the town of Katalla is underlain by beach and terrace deposits overlying Tertiary sedimentary rocks. This site offers better protection than either of the other two from southeast and southwest storms. Longshore transport along a spit east of the site has filled the Katalla River to within 3 feet of the surface to mean low tide. Dredging requirements at this site would be much greater than at sites 1 and 2.
