The wealth of recently accumulated geographic information on Alaska has made desirable a new classification of the state into physiographic divisions. Most of Alaska is now covered by topographic maps of high quality at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000, prepared by multiplex methods from aerial photography. A classification made now is not likely to err through lack of knowledge of the geography and topography of the state; any changes it requires will reflect matters of judgment and taste, rather than ignorance. The accompanying classification was prepared intermittently between 1949 and 1959; most of the work was done between 1956 and 1959. It is hoped that it will bring about a clearer understanding of the geography of Alaska and will stimulate research into the history of development of Alaskan landforms.

Peak unit discharges for small drainage areas (less than about 15 square miles) were the highest ever measured in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and for very small areas (about one square mile) were of the same order of magnitude as those for the record Ontonagon River flood of August 1942 in the Upper Peninsula.
Because the flood area is sparsely populated, damages were largely confined to farm lands and facilities and to secondary roads and their appurtenant drainage structures.
The U. S. Geological Survey, through the district office in Lansing, Michigan, operates a network of streamgaging stations and crest-stage stations in the area affected by this flood. Six recording rain gages are operated in the upper Rifle River basin. Most of the gaging stations have been in operation for 7 to 9 years giving systematic records of stage, discharge, and volume of flow covering the range from drought to flood. This report contains records of

period, peak discharges at 7 crest-stage stations
and 2 miscellaneous sites within the flood area, and

S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 203 wells, in 8 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements, covering the period 1941 through 1955, have been published in Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers; those for 1956, 1957, and 1958 have been released locally in duplicated form. Water-Supply Paper 1068 contains tabulated descriptions of 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the various ground-water basins of the county. The same publication also contains many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.
Comprehensive reports on the geology and ground-water resources of the Santa Ynez River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951, and Wilson, 1959), the south-coast basins (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyama Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1467, 1108, 1000, and 1110-B, respectively. A report on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity of the Santa Ynez River valley (Troxell and Wilson, 1952) was released to the open file in October 1952.
In addition to the water-level measurements made by the Geological Survey in 1959, measurements made by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District are included in this report. Not included in this report are miscellaneous measurements made by the Geological Survey in wells along the middle reach of the Santa Ynez River between Cachuma Dam and Rucker Crossing.

Corporation's plant site, in central eastern Eddy County, N. Mex., unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age and redbeds of Triassic age attain a thickness of about 700 feet, and rest unconformably on evaporites of late Permian age. The upper Permiau evaporites are 3,000 to 3,800 feet thick, and they are divided, in descending order, into the Rustler, Salado, and Castile formations. The Rustler is largely gypsum rock, the Salado is dominantly halite rock, and the Castile contains both anhydrite rock and halite rock. The salt and anhydrite beds of the Salado and Castile are intruded by narrow dikes of alkalic rock along which the evaporites are little altered. The two streams, which flow through the Sandhills region of Nebraska, have about the same water discharge, sediment concentration, and particle-size distribution of suspended sediment and bed material. Sediment discharges and flow resistances varied widely, although water discharges remained almost constant. The factor affecting the variations was water temperature, which ranged from 32° to 80° F. The bed form, which also varied with the water temperature, seemed to have a dominating influence on the sediment discharge, flow resistance, and possibly the vertical distribution of velocity and suspended sediment. Multiple regression with parameters derived from dimensional analysis yielded an expression for predicting the flow resistance and the widths and depths of individual channel sections. Contrary to those near many other confluences, slopes were steeper and channels were wider downstream from the junction of the two rivers than they were upstream. An investigation of specific sediment-transport phenomena and field procedures was made during 1956 and 1957 in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The purposes of this investigation were to provide information on the regime of rivers and to improve the procedures related to the collection of sediment data.
