S. Geological Survey, with the cooperation of the Arkansas Geological and Conservation Commission, has been engaged in stratigraphic investiqations in northern Arkansas to aid in the search for oil and gas. Seven reports of these investigations, including both surface and subsurface studies, have been completed (Lantz, 1950; Maher and Lantz, 1952, 1953a, 1953b; Glick and Frezon, 1953; Sheldon, 1954; Frezon and Glick, in press). This report, which was completed in 1955, presents the detailed stratigraphic sections used in correlating and mapping rocks of Chester and Morrow age in and adjacent to the Mount Judea and Snowball quadrangles in Newton and Searcy Counties. The locations of the sections are shown in figure 1 and are described in relation to topographic and cultural features shown on the topographic maps of the Mount Judea, Snowball, and Marshall, Arkansas, quadrangles and the Harrison, Arkansas-Missouri, quadrangle. The State-wide summary will show the quantity, quality and distribution of coal in the State based on a study of all available information.</p><p>The Centralia-Chehalis district is in Lewis and Thurston Counties. It covers an area of more than 200 square miles underlain by coal-bearing rocks and is the largest of the subbituminous coal fields in southwestern Washington. The total reserves of subbituminous coal remaining in the ground in this district as of January 1, 1958, are estimated to be 3,694 million short tons, all within 3,000 feet of the surface.</p><p>The Kelso-Castle Rock area is in Lewis and Cowlitz Counties. The coal in this area ranges in rank from lignite to subbituminous. The total reserves of coal in the area are estimated to be about 150 million short tons, all within less than 24000 feet of the surface.
